Before I open...

1) YOu playing the USSR? They have a huge leader list.
2) What are the specs of your PC?
3) Are you trying to assign leaders to military controlled troops of an ally?

i can confirm this problem.

it is noticable with ussr in particular, but also with germany.

exactly what is so large that it has to stall the computer
t's just tiny graphics of leaders in there unless it's actually 32 50
mb pictures softresized to 50*50 ixels :D

fyi i use a 1.8g celeron. i do suppose that's fast enough

ps sorry for the all-lower case text, but i spilled coffee on my keyboard so uppercase is currently unavailable.

I've played for many hours without this problem. It occured recently. If you want it, I have a savegame about a month before this occured.

To answer your questions:

1 - Playing Germany
2 - AMD Thunderbird 1.33GHz 256Mb RAM
3 - No this applies to my own units

Additional info: I have a corrupted db due to the paratrooper bug.

I noticed it in my one, aborted, early attempt at playing the ussr. I quickly gave up because it was so annoying. It'd be nice if they could look into seeing if it could be improved.

Intel, PIII 733, 256mb, 98SE

The lag will prolly occur because the USSR leaderlist is so huge. I will prolly cut out some utter useless leaders. (all the skill 1 Mj-Gens...)

For Germany, the list is fine with me. I don't think it's the list if you say you have a 1.8Ghz pc

Vulture: Have you even checked my savegame? The lag is bad. I mean REALLY BAD! The mousepointer updates at about 1hz when I try to select a leader for one of my armies. Only then.

I got the impression you lost track of who was the original poster of this thread. It seems you've replied to someone else.

I havn't noticed that problem. The very first time I get about a 2 second lag, after that nothing, since it's in the cache then. (AMD Athlon 2800+, 512megs DDR, grab one at www.newegg.com :) )

Are you guys running programs in the background, anti virus, email, instant messaging, printer/scanner stuff, etc... if you are, try turning them off. It would be nice if that soviet file was a wee bit smaller :)

edit-
This is on Windows XP pro, fully updated. With the latest drivers for everything, Geforce 4 Ti , SB Live, DX9...

well there is lag . I have a 400Mhz crusoe tablet with 128 megs of ram. The game is fairly fast in all parts except when I change leaders. I assume during that time there is some tight programming loop. Perhaps it's needed I dunno but some code is causing it for sure. On my athlon 1700 desktop there is no lag and it runs fine.

I assign cache as needed (not fixed). If HoI for some reason cannot use that, then it's a minor bug.

Did anyone notice this problem before 1.02?

In any case, I think there are a number of indications now that hardware has something to do with the wide variety of player experiences with different game features.

I dare hardly ask, but has Paradox made a standard compatibility check of HoI?

To make things clear: It seems like we're talking about two diffrent problems here.

1) A general lag when selecting leaders. Seems to only trouble low-end systems.

2) My problem. Every aspect of the game ran fine on my Thunderbird 1.33GHz 256Mb RAM. Until suddenly, after many hours of play, the particular game linked in my fist post lagged REALLY BAD when selecting leaders. Game works fine otherwise. It has nothing to do with background programs, slow CPU etc. That particular game was f****d up by some reason. That's my problem.

If this was clear from the beginning, I apologize for the spam.

I don't suppose you consider my 1.8 gHz system 'low end'?

IOWs there's definately a general problem here - it's not just you.

[I smell a memory leak]

Btw.: I see this thread has now been labelled NOT A BUG.

I have almost same problem:

When playing with SU, I can choose leaders, but if I move a game view when leaders menu is on, it moves very slowly. This doesn't really matter because I don't need to move game view when choosing leaders... Just noticed it yesterday..

JouniL, your problem is prolly the huge USSR list which I might cut severely...

The other problems are prolly support issues.

Falken...now that we're over here in the support forum, can you give me even more detailed system specs please. Most importantly:
  • the country version of HoI you're running (I'm guessing it's Vision but it's safer to ask in case you bought it elsewhere)
  • OS currently being used
  • Current cache settings - have you tried hard-fixing your cache size?
  • Full card descriptions (sound and video) including current drivers and build versions - you can run dxdiag to look these up easily. Older drivers are often the culprits.
  • How much V-RAM do you have?
  • Have you tried adjusting the hardware acceleration for either card (another common culprit)
  • DirectX version and build you're running
  • Could you also please disable the start-up binkplay.exe by renaming the \avi folder to avi_old (you'd be amazed what happens to linger in memory after those intro clips) and then load your save game again and test it.
Let us know and we'll take it from there.

Note to the others who have posted in this thread: not that his is in the support forum, please start a separate support thread here if you are having troubles and need tech support. It's one thread each here so we can work on each solution individually....often thile it may appear to be the same or a similar problem the solutions are usually system-specific.

Thanks.

I still get the impression that you don't understand my problem. I think there is nothing wrong with my machine because:
1) Game played fine up to a certain point.
2) I can start a new game, as Germany or USSR, and the game plays fine.
3) I can reload an older save game of the same game as the one where the lag occured, and the game plays fine.
4) To my knowledge noone has tested my save game yet. I'm pretty sure that if anybody should load my save game they would have the same problem.

Here goes the info you requested:
- Scandinavian version
- Windows 98SE
- You have to be more specific. What cache are you talking about?
- Video:
Radeon 7500 64Mb DDR
Latest Catalyst drivers 4.14.0001.9076
Sound:
SB Live Platinum w/ special kX drivers build 3523
- V-RAM Windows managed.
- Hardware acceleration , how can I do this?
- DirectX 9.0 4.09.0000.0900
- Renamed /avi to /avi_old. No change.
- As a reminder: AMD Thunderbird 1.33GHz / 256Mb SDRAM

But PLEASE before digging deeper into the depths of my machine, try my SAVE GAME!

Here I go again: I had to drop my german game because by may 1939 it was impossible to replace leaders. The lag was so heavy that apparantly the mouseclicks on another leader in the list isn't recognised. If I load the status of april 1939, the leaderlist is still useable and only burdened by a small lag.

I tried pausing first - makes no difference. I tried deleting a lot of save files (why, you may ask). No difference. I tried swithcing nation and back. No difference. May 1939 is unplayable, april 1939 is OK, yet lagging.

My stats:
-Scandinavian version
-Win98 SE PE
-Celeron 1.8 GHz
-256MB SDRAM
-GeForce 4 videocard.
-DirectX: the one that came with HoI.

Note: this is a new computer so HoI was in fact the very first game installed. Ie a 'clean' installation. It cannot have been polluted by other games' use of directx etc. I do now have RA2 installed which uses directx too AFAIR, but it uses an older DirectX so it shouldn't have altered anything for HoI.
