My taste for the game got quite ruined when I spotted that Flanders now is a de jure ducy of Frisia? Oh yes, I'm one of "those guys" that favours a little historical flavour now and then.

First: there's not one historical evidence for this kind of grotesque situation were the counts of Flanders are related to the kingdom of Frisia.

Second: there were considerable strong ties between the vassals in Flanders and the French crown. IIRC both in good and bad ways.

Third: Frisia is a title within the HRE and Flanders is NOT a HRE member at the start of the game. The counts of Flanders ruled small patches of land inside the HRE but that's no reason to put them outside the French crown.

So now you all can go rant on my remark that I'm very dissappointed that the game lost very much it's historical flavour. So basicly you all can say it's not a historical simulator, etc. But for me this is one step too far.

It has almost no effect on Flanders players if they choose to stay with the French crown. Within 100 years, you will be de-jure France and have no ties to the Dutch culture. You can even convert to Frankish easily and convert your provinces within 100 years as well, if you wish.

The game won't play directly parallel to history, but should allow for some new kingdoms to rise. The question to ask is "If a powerful Duke managed to control all of the Netherlands, will he be able to crown himself King?". Frisian lands are very rich and at times can rival France in terms of income/troops.

If the French King was excommunicated and went against the church, it is plausible that the Pope would give a strong Dutch presence the right to rule their own lands, even just to weaken France.

There's no point arguing about these things -- they're gameplay / balance decisions and are unlikely to change. Quite a few mods change the de jure layout of Europe so you could try some of them and see which setup you prefer.
