Merit is the leading principle...

I'm playing as the United States for the first time, and was having a great game up until the moment when I accidently pressed "accept" to a Mexican white peace offer. Thank god for autosave.

But that said, I'm puzzled: once I got the appropriate philosophical tech, I picked all the right options to make the U.S. a meritocratic society. But I've been stunned by how often the "Merit is the leading principle of our government" event has come up - at least six times by my count now, and perhaps seven.

Anyone else have this problem? Is this a bug? Should it appear more than once?

I know what you are talking about. The bad thing is that the diplo efficiency goes down with each of those events, and you'll end up with 0.01 multiplier (actually still getting 1 diplo each year). That sure sucks for a Great Power.

AFAIK this is a known bug. The event is bad enough as it is now, and shouldn't pop up more than once. At least it's not designed to do so.

It's a bug and there is a fix in the Bug Forum, I think. It's a simply matter of changing one trigge condition.
