If a species self-modifies for habitability, and then goes into conflict with the original species on the planet, it can make further modifications to itself to help it in this conflict. In so doing, it can end up with incompatible mods - I currently have a species which is both weak and strong. It can also end up with negative gene points remaining (not sure if that's a bug).

I love that event, with the run away molding. I thought they were going to kill themselves of, but they didn't. I had to relocate them because they were ruining the planet. As for the polar opposite that should probably be reported in the bug reports.
