Hard disagree on the origins one. Some origins should be extremely hard while some should be broken easy mode.

If I want unbalanced origins I'll hit up the workshop, devs should put some effort into keeping the origins they make viable on one end and not busted on the other, and leave the gamebreaking features to the modders.

We choose crisis type in the galaxy settings. The ideal place for selecting a precursor would be within empire settings, otherwise every empire would get the exact same precursor.

We choose crisis type in the galaxy settings. The ideal place for selecting a precursor would be within empire settings, otherwise every empire would get the exact same precursor.

Basically, what would have to happen is that the game generates the galaxy, sets all the precursor territories, and then makes sure the player (and their cluster) spawns in a particular precursor's territory. This wouldn't guarantee you got that precursor (especially with the Zroni or Baol), but it would make it extremely likely.

But I don't know if the game is set up to do this. It could do it with "on start" events, but I this could potentially cause other problems like the player still being able to see the part of the map they were originally spawned in before the event moved them.

It would also have to be restricted in multiplayer, I think, to prevent the game having to shuffle a ton of empires around.

I think galaxy settings is actually the logical place. "No advanced neighbours" is also in the galaxy settings, and it doesn't mean no empire can have advanced neighbours, only the player.

You don't plan your empire around having advanced neighbors or not. You may change your focus on research and alloy production if you discover one, but not its starting settings.

Precursors work more like origins: they set you into a path. Sure, some are flat out useless, and some provide buffs that are good enough for any type of empire (such as the Cybrex), but others, like the Zroni, are super niche, and you'd only select that for an empire that's designed to go Psionic. Say, a Spiritualist empire. And definitely not a Gestalt.

I'd say being able to choose your precursor would be a pretty bad idea, since then it'd just become another bonus that you can add to your overall build and abuse the hell out of. It'd take away from the exploration aspect of the game, make games feel more same-y and introduce a new level of power creep on top of the already existing ones.

Instead, what I'd like to see is an overall balance pass for the precursors, and maybe the option to go down different paths. Treat them as tradition swaps - if my empire can't use the shroud, the Zroni should naturally go down a path where the Precursor leads to different bonuses that are more fitting for the empire in terms of both, gameplay and lore. And maybe most empires for whom the shroud is not a natural fit should have the choice of both options.

Imho, you pin-point the problem with precursor just right, the issue is mire than some are boring and "flat" (irrassian) than the difference of power between them.
There is also the question of the Zroni, who are totally useless if you don't go psionic. It would be nice if the devs take enough time to rethink and rework the whole system.
