The idea that AA is only supposed to suppress planes and not kill them just seems extremely silly to me.

Imagine if devs decided that anti tank guns were not supposed to kill tanks and only to supress them and tanks should kill tanks.

A plane can only be countered by two types of units - AA and other planes and the decision that aa is only meant to supress is something i dont think i will be ever able to agree.

Try flying over the 3rd Armoured Division, nearly everything has a machine gun on it and it's like a fireworks display when they all open up. Seeing as this drives off planes fairly well I would say that groundfire can also be a counter.

Both may be a problem.

If AA is supposed to supress, then the Tri-Polsten and the 4x50cal are outliers that need to be brought down.
Exaclty. For some reason tri-polstein is exceptionally good, and since AA is suposed to be a shield it makes no sense that this one can reliably kill planes.

It would help if you could screenshot the positions of your AA on the battlefield. I have seen people parking AA close to LOS blockers and wondering why they aren't shooting at anything, whereas the devs have said openly (in one of the youtube streams) that the absolute best place to put AA is in the middle of an open field with long clear lines of sight.
Another thing to keep in mind with SD is that, unlike WG:RD, where you have to keep a wide AA net to deter choppers, in SD you're better off making concentrated (but not too close) AA batteries with commanders near them.

Very much so. Park a fairly juicy target in an open field (i.e arty observer who has expended their 'ammo') and line a corridor with AA and commanders. This bait technique works well just as Phase C starts and players finally get access to their anti-tank rocket planes.

Using the battery-method works especially well with 88's since they have a much higher kill-rate than the small caliber guns
