Because he isn't paying attention, doesn't realize what that card does/did, or just plain has no clue whatsoever? :p
To be fair, I don't think you waited very long for people to play SP's or even asked if anyone wanted to play that to begin with ..

Because it was his turn and activated FTL himself? I would shortcut him playing SP as we..

Play Tactics-1 (Launch Scout) targeting the crisis deck

My best move here, got to go find a nasty one.

I think EL answered it quite well, just wanted to add I did thought about PMing Repbentley and asks whether he wants to play SP. But I thought that might influence the game beyond what a GM should do so I decided not to.

Players other than Repbentley either have no SP or had a preload which states not to play any SP, so that's why I skipped the wait for SP phase.

Oh, I understand why glasszon did it, I just had to offset my criticism of Bentley somehow. :p

Myeah. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't type of thing.
I really don't think the GM should be in the business of handholding players. Nor do I think ghosts should be *whistles*.
I probably would have chosen to do it differently and ask publicly for an SP anyway, simply because I abhor situations where people make decisions that are completely devoid of sense*.
But that's not a criticism, that's more like a difference in style.

Obviously certain players do need a lot of handholding, or they end up hurting the other players on their team (who might not have done anything to deserve that), but .. on the other hand, considering the history, maybe the other players on his team could have been more proactive about it as well.
(*) In a real boardgame I highly doubt the situation would have ended up the way it did. No GM to fall back to, and people usually pay a bit more attention ;-) )

*shrug*. None of this bodes well for my former team, at any rate :p

I try and do a santy check on plays for newer players, and sometimes would give them several suggestions for actions they might want to consider. Not just one, but a few to give them ideas on what they could do. The game flows nicely once you know everything, but learning everything for those first few turns is a bit hard.

But once a person has played enough I tend not to sanity check their plays any more. This has bit people before, but the person in question had GMed this game here. So when he made a play that seemed odd, I figured he had a plan. He just forgot what colors counted for the test, but the GM is to guide the game, not the players.

That was totally me. I can get really scatterbrained sometimes, especially when I'm in a rush. I've slowed down when I'm dealing with turns, but I still make mistakes (see mistaking glasszon saying something for BSG 24)

That's always very fun when somebody does that in the early game... Are they a Cylon or did they just make a mistake?

I mis-read the whole SP thing. It says to add 2 to a roll. Reading the FTL control it says roll a due and that's how much population you lose. Obviously adding +2 to any roll with the higher number being negative pop did not look like the right choice. That is all.

You lose the population depending on where the X is on the jump prep track. You need a high dice roll in order to not lose pop.

In your case, the X was at the "1" spot, so if you got a 7 or 8, you would have not lost pop, while if you had a 1-6 you would have only lost 1.

And I'm guessing Jopi is going to the sickbay.

I can see how you were confused.

Here is the card text, right in the first post.

(3-5) Strategic Planning: Play before a die roll to add 2 to result. Limit 1 per die roll.

Contrast with
(3-5) Calculations: Play after a die is rolled to add or subtract 1 from the result. Limit 1 per die roll.

You get a much larger effect with SP, but it must be played before you roll the die.

Calculations can be played afterwards if you wish to. But you get a much smaller effect.

That is the trade off here. Larger effect or use only when needed.

Make it reckless.

If you can.

I rather wait and see what the humans would like to try and play to make it reckless before I do. I rather hold it for another test.

Can I get a nay from all the humans first?
