Despite a great deal of persuasion, the Portuguese have not yet been forthcoming with their maps. But as merrick points out, without an exploerer of their own, Bruce and Barry won't find a way to Australia.
I think the only solution may be exploration through conquest.
Especially after the Netherlands form up. A few sea battles to steal rutters might be the way to go.

Chapter 4, Part VI
In which economic restructuring is required
April 20, 1506
Scene: A green hilltop, not too far from the walls of Vienna. Maximilian, Bruce and Barry are all on horseback.Nobody else is in sight.
Maximilian: Now that we are safe from eavesdroppers ... I have just had a disturbing visit from an Italian gentleman, who claims to be a friend of yours.
Barry: We deal with so many people ... Did he tell you his name?
Maximilian: No. He was very clear that he wouldn't give his name. He was dressed in black and wearing a great deal of gold jewellery. He was escorted by a thin man with a scar on his cheek. Sound familiar to you?
Barry: Err ... Yes, I think he does.
Maximilian: Then I think you have a problem. When he spoke to me, he mentioned you both. Or rather he mentioned Karl and Conrad and their recent retirement. He said that he knew where they were lived. He also made vague threats about your safety as Dieter and Edvin.
Bruce: That sounds like the guy we met. What did he want?
Maximilian: He suggested that it would be in my ... our ... best interests if we paid him an 10% of the cost of everything that we purchase, from helmets for the troops to a new manufactory. Apparently this extra 10% will be "insurance" to ensure that "accidents" don't happen.
Barry: 10% on everything! That sounds like extortion to me!
Maximilian: And to me. However he suggested that he had already agreed this policy with you ... as Karl and Conrad. Why would he think that?
Barry: He approached us. When was it?
Bruce: *quietly* Do we really want to tell Maximilian about this?
Barry: *dropping his voice as well* I think he'll find out anyway.
Bruce: Yeah, it was 1497.
Barry: Yes, in 1497 that gentleman met with us and made a donation of 200 ducats.
Maximilian: A "donation"? Surely he expected something in return.
Bruce: We were worried that he did, but we didn't agree to anything.
Maximilian: *Giving the boys a quizzical look* So he gave you 200 ducats for no reason? I find that hard to believe. He struck me as many things, but not stupid.
Barry: He did mention something about us doing him a favour ...
Bruce: But it was very vague ...
Barry: I had thought it would be something like coming to his son's christening.
Maximilian: *Even more incredulous* Really?
Barry: Well ... perhaps a little more than that. But nothing this major.
Maximilian: It didn't occur to you that this was corruption?
Barry: Oh no. We recorded the donation and kept receipts.
Maximilian: Yes, I can believe that you would have too. So what are we going to do about this?
Barry: I think we should crack down on this man and his associates.
Maximilian: I agree. We can't afford to let him get his way. Spend what you need from the treasury. We will use the money this man gave us to help put an end to the corruption he has created.
Barry: We'll get right to it.
Maximilian: Good. Inform the stable master I will be back in an hour or so ...
Maximilian turns and begins to ride away from Vienna, towards the nearby forest.
Bruce: Shouldn't someone come with you?
Maximilian: *Over his shoulder* I'll be fine!
Barry: *shrugs* We're not paid to be bodyguards, Bruce. Lets go.
As Bruce and Barry turn back towards the walls Vienna, a small mound infront of them rolls back and the narrator appears from a hidey-hole under the layer of grass. Bruce and Barry look startled, but not surprised to see him.
Narrator: Barry and Bruce spend a total of 100 ducats investigating the Legitimate Businessmen, including a small sum to provide personal protection for them. The investigation is very rigourous, and a number of genuine businesses were inconvenienced. The entire Austrian economy was slowed as Bruce and Barry struggled to bring the Legitimate Businessmen to justice. Eventually, Barry found a number of anomalies on their income tax returns. The man who had dealt with Bruce and Barry was identified as Vito Grollo. He was sentenced to five years imprisonment for tax fraud. He was also found to have entered the country illegally, so after he had served his time he was deported back to Naples, the country of his birth.

January 12, 1508
Scene: The library. Bruce is playing wargames, using inkpots as soldiers. Just as he is moving his cavalry forwards, a rope drops to the floor next to him and the narrator rappels down from the ceiling. Bruce is startled and knocks over one of his soldiers. He swears under his breath and begins mopping up the ink.
Narrator: Austria continued with its pacifist policies over the next two years. So long had the period of peace been that the military alliance between Austria, Saxony, Mainz and Hungary was allowed to lapse in September 1506. Within a week, the Hungarians had formed a new alliance with their former enemies, Naples, Venice and the Papal States. The Austrians were not sad to see them go, and over the next two weeks, Bruce and Barry moved to form a new alliance with Mainz, Savoy and Saxony. Although none of these partners was as powerful as the Hungarians, they were also far less war-like.
Also on the diplomatic front, the relations between France and Austria continued to improve, as France agreed to join the League of Cambrai.
The narrator tugs on the rope and it detaches from the ceiling. He coils it up and slips out a side door as Barry enters.
Barry: Have you heard? Max has chosen a bunch of weavers to help him with his finances.
Bruce: Isn't that your job Barry?
Barry: I know.
Barry surveys the carnage of Bruce's battlefield.
Barry: And it would be easier to do my job if you left my paperwork alone.
Bruce: Sorry about that Barry, but the narrator guy was ... *Bruce looks around, and is surprised not to find the narrator* yeah, well, sorry.
Barry: *sighs* Anyway, the Fuggers are ...
Bruce: Barry!
Barry: What? The Fuggers ...
Bruce: Language, Barry!
Barry: No, seriously, thats their name. The Fuggers from Augsburg will be supporting the Austrian throne financially.
Bruce: Ohhh ... So the Fuggers will become merchant bankers? Does it make much difference?
Barry: Well, apparently they have huge resources, so the loans will be 500 ducats from now on.
Bruce: But we don't actually have any loans do we?
Barry: No, and I have worked flat out to avoid getting any. But we have to prepare for the possibility that we might need some.
Bruce: Don't we just go to the bank?
Barry: Banks haven't really been invented yet. Up until now, I would have approached the local business people, but the corruption scandal has made them a bit edgy.
Bruce: Fair enough. But it won't make much difference will it?
Barry: No, not really. We'll also get some extra merchants.
Bruce: We've already got more than we can use don't we?
Barry: Yeah. The best thing about the deal seems to be that the Fuggers have really excellent contacts, so the price of everything will be reduced by about 5%.
Bruce: Reduced?! Whats the catch?
Barry: Well, they need 100 ducats now to set things moving, but thats it.
Bruce: And you trust them?
Barry: *shrugs* I dunno. But Max does, so I guess I do too.
