Are you running a 32-bit OS?

Rajas of India increased the memory usage of CK2. Which has caused some problem on older computers who doesn't have a chunk of memory to work with, or is using a 32-bit OS (therefore having memory constraints). If you could run the diagnostic tools for DirectX, by using the tool "Run" and typing "dxdiag", you should be able to get a bunch of text with information about your computer system. Upload that information here so that I can take a look at it.

Our dear programmers are working on optimizing the CK2 engine, in order to save up some memory usage, but doesn't have an ETA on when it will be patched into the game

Not to derail Aaronomus' thread, but I posted earlier that I'm having the exact same problem (as are others around here), on os-32. Given my own thread is on page 3/4, can I post my dx log here, or just bump my own thread?

Sure, you can post it here if you want.

But looking at donofwar3's information, it looks like it is because of memory constraints. Until we are able to optimize the memory usage of CK2, a temporary solution is to disable all graphical DLC (like unit packs and portraits) and/or song packs, in order to lower the memory used by CK2. Not an optimal solution, I know, but at least it should solve the issue at the moment so that you can get your daily dose of CK2.

So these memory constraints are what's breaking save games?

Yeah, it should be.

Try the temporary solution I posted and see if that works.

Ya playing the Game with out those DLC was kinda painful then I was playing then it did this C++ runtime error then it crashed.

That is probably a part of the memory issues as well. See this thread for more detailed suggestions and explanations: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?764383-Microsoft-Visual-C-Runttime-Library

The official system requirements are the following:

Windows XP/Vista/7
Intel® Pentium® IV 2.4 GHz or AMD 3500+
2 GB RAM
2 GB free hard drive space
NVIDIA® GeForce 8800 or ATI Radeon® X1900 video card
Direct X-compatible sound card
DirectX 9
3-button mouse
keyboard
speakers
Internet connection for multiplayer

However, using DLC increases the RAM usage (And even though you have 4GB, Windows usually reserves a chunk of memory for system stuff, which is not as efficient for a 32-bit OS). Which is way we are working on doing some memory optimization, which should lower the overall RAM usage when playing the game.

Some optimization has been done in the open beta patch. You could opt into that and see if it works any better. Just go to your Steam client and open "Library", right-click on Crusader Kings II and enter "Properties". Then go to the "BETAS" tab and select the "Beta - Beta 2.1.2.1" to use the actual patch (please note that it is a beta patch). Just choose "NONE" if you want to remove it afterwards.

Excellent! Thanks for reporting back. Then we know that the optimizations are going in the right direction. :)

Some more optimizations should be coming in the future, making it more efficient.
