Well this sure is Europe filled with troubles and war. Seem the Mongol Horde really have done much to destroy much of Europe for a very long time. Wonder how all this will turn out in the future. Nice work Mett.

In place of the Babylonian Captivity and Anti-Popes, you have a urope struggling to recover from Mongol depravations, Black Deathand local warlords. I picture a Western and Cental Europe of one province nations with the notable exceptions of Tartar Hungary and Plantaganet England under the Black Prince ruling parts of Scotland and France.

The Catholic Church would still have Bishops etc..., but their flocks would be animal as well as human souls. Orders such as the Franciscans with their emphasis on practical Chrisitianity would profoundly affect all other orders. The Knightly Monastic Orders Templars (clearly not suppressed), Hospitallers, Teutonic and Livonians would maintain their estates and way of life better than most.

Mercy and faithfulness were far from the land
And violence lived among the peoples.

The Lord was wroth
And turned to the third angel,
Who brought forth the Mantle of God.

The Mantle was placed above the Earth,
Between the land and sky.

Therefore did Darkness rule over the lands,
For the sun shone naught.
A tempest and upheaval were laid upon them.

Judgements 6:4-7, The Anhalt Testament

By the end of the 14th century, Europe was teetering on the brink. Invasions and disease had decimated the population beyond all comprehension. Whereas the peasants and nobles feared the wrath of God, what they once saw as a cry for repentance was now a reason for despair. In the primal need for survival, faith was burdensome as the hunt for food, even shelter, became of primary importance. Morals derived less importance when your neighbor had grain and you had nothing, particularly when there were no constables to enforce the arbitrary laws of kingdoms and counties.

To add to the misery of Europe, the weather was growing colder. A significant cooling in the medieval climate was moving into full force. The Viking colonies on Greenland would disappear from known history, the northern parts of Scotland and Scandinavia would become almost uninhabitable. Arable land would shrink, the growing season would shorten, and with little organized agriculture hanging on in Europe already, crop failure occurred on a massive scale. More horrors were unleashed upon Europe, and not just the continent, but its Asian and African neighbors, for the effects were large-scale. Infanticide grew, violence abounded, and even rumors of cannibalism grew out of myth in the remote parts.

What were once kingdoms were fiction, and complicated oaths of fealty meant nothing when the nobles’ soldiers had declined into raiders, and the royal coffers were empty of both coin and grain. The kingdoms were the first to decline, then the smaller duchies, counties, until Europe became a collection of villages and cities clinging together for mere base existence. If this was the judgement of God, it had set upon the people in full force. Europe limped into the next century, exhausted and desperate for a time of peace. Yet it was the base nature of man to make war upon one another, in good times and bad.

Yikes, Europe looks like an anarchic wasteland, what between the Mongols and incessant warfare and now climate change. Now pick up the sword, don the crown and unite Europe for an era of peace! ;)

Sounds like there will be many tiny states, which should lead to near-incessant warfare. Should be interesting. :)

Any goals you have in mind, or will this simply be a free-for-all, no-holds-barred game of wanton destruction?

As I think on it, it would seem whatever religion is left would become more focused on salvation from the hell rained down on them. I would think at least the lower rungs of society would cling tightly to their spiritual beliefs due to the feel of end-times that surround them. It must be as if the end of the world is upon them. I can see many taking advantage of this, especially church types.

Looking forward to the game start. Nice prologue, Mett.

The Church has already experienced one "end of the word" at the end of the Western Roman Empire. It survived that and now has a model to work to during this crisis

The Hospitallers had around 4,000 estates across Europe, the Templars 9,000. Monasteries were in the forefront of the agricultural revolution.
The Orders may still have had their Middle Eastern possessions -nothing has been said about that. The three Orthodox Patriarches in Mamluk lands would seem to still be flourishing. It eould be ironic if the Church were reunited under Orthodox control. Clerical celibacy that initially meant no legitimate offspring would have been junked. The Templars were already attaching Convents to their Houses at the time the Mongols first struck.

After such terrors as told in Revelation, the ordinary populace will be expecting the Second Coming to unite the nations of the world under his rule. There would be great messianic expectation. Anyone who managed to create any sort of state would be seen as the "messiah".
