British shipbuilding AI is screwed (compared to the American one)

You're right but it's most weird to see a CA (armoured cruiser) with literally zero armour on it in the game. It's like calling a pure truck division an armoured division :)
Well, for the sake of training the Panzer Leader trait [for any future use] you can do that already, and not even trucks are required.

But it should work the other way around too: I want to designate 3 of my BBs as 'destroyers' (just allow me to mount some ASW) to 'screen' the forth one, and to finally hunt convoys with a purely capital task force without the risk of facing convoys-the-almighty.

What do you mean? That you can get the trait with Armored Cars or something like that? Because I'm pretty sure you need something with armour as the dominant type in the division.

You can make armor divisions that have no actual tanks equipped (because you have none in stock). Typically you would leave them out of combat and fight with only the infantry. If over 40% of the general's divisions are completely unequipped, tankless "armored" divisions that don't even see combat, he will still gain panzer leader.

Yeah, typically I have 10 of those guarding a pretty lake nearby [10/24 = 0.41 ratio], who switch commanders as needed and also serve as a 20k manpower reserve in case of emergency. At this particular screenshot, the divisions have been lucky enough to even get some FT-17's from the exiles to entertain themsevles while swimming is restricted due to weather concerns.

In all seriousness, though, I don't quite get what I'm doing 'wrong' here. Convoy raiding is a legitimate tool to win the attrition war, and I have merely 2-3 task forces commited to that. And instead of building yet more surface raiders I've produced 4 carriers and the other 4 are on the way. So how the devs suppose it to work 'normally', then?

Isn't it possible to fix this by modding?

I don't know of any mod that has been able to fix it. Expert AI mod doesn't fix it, for example (although they still improve the shipbuilding AI in a lot of ways).

It's funny/tragic to let the AI do the Yamato focus and watch them immediately cancel the ships.
