If you want anything more than a big clump of ships to blockade something in Europe or to try to scare the enemy with a paper army, you're looking for a different ally.
I was a newbie when i allied britain. I haven't allied britain since. The reason i made this thread is just to seethe. I actively go out of my way to partition britain and scorch the ground there to spite britain.

It depends on whether France is competent or not. In some of my games, England surrenders Maine and France never attacks Britain to reconquer her cores, which allowed Britain to expand into Brittany and Provence and Burgundy. In this case, Britain may help her allies in fighting wars.

At least England won't call you into wars after they lose all of their French holdings. With England you get a big ally that helps against getting declared on by coalitions or whatever. That's usually the only thing I want out of an ally.

The emperor on the other hand will call you into every war and happily watch as you get carpet sieged. It doesn't help that nations don't consider the emperor's allies before declaring on an HRE member. With the emperor you are non-stop fighting wars you don't want to be in.

They've never been great, but in some patches they are a lot better than in others. The AI is particularly bad at naval invasions on the current patch, so it's likely that they get better on the next one.

England's been a pretty much worthless ally for all nine years of EU4. They can help you look too strong on paper to attack, but when it comes to actual fighting, any nation that doesn't have to rely on transports to move its armies into position is a better choice.

In the showcase on twitch last week, they mentioned the AI will be more likely to help out if they say they do, so, might be worth looking at in Lions of the North.

They're usless when YOU want them, but as soon as they enter on the side of the AI they bring their 50K troops and 50+ ships right to your doorstep in like Venice or whatever. Love the player bias aha! It makes it more challenging however so I am not completely against it.

Great Britain is the best ally in the game -- both when you are allied to them or when they are allied to your enemies.

If you think an ally is a nation whose army and navy are there to help you conquer things or defend yourself, what you are actually thinking of in EU4 is a Vassal. GB is a horrible, no good and utterly useless vassal.

As an ally GB is amazing and wonderful.

First, they never call you into stupid wars to conquer Liege or defend Liege while you are trying to do something else. But, at the same time, every AI enemy that you have calculates whether to declare on you at the worst moment factoring GB's massive army and navy. The AI has no way of knowing that GB has no idea how to move or land its troops anywhere and fight.

Second, when they are allied to your enemies, the same applies. As the human player, you ought to know that the British Army is never going to be a factor and so you can write their contribution out of your calculations. The same is not necessarily true of their navy, which will blockade fairly regularly and effectively. Portugal thinks its safe because GB has its back, but in reality Portugal would have been better off allying the Pope, since the Pope's army might make it to the fight while the war is going on.

As Majapahit, literally on the other side of the world from Britain, I have found that GB are a wonderful deterrent to the Spanish-French Union trying to invade more of Nusantara than they've already colonized. I don't need their armies, and they won't ask me to help them with some foolish European war, but they'll help keep the fleets of the Continental adversary away from the sacred isles while I try to fight the Russo-Chinese alliance again and again.
