Further consolidation for Germany as the world rumbles on in one way or another.

There isn't a proper Weimar Republic path yet in this mod but one of the next releases is going to add the ability to preserve the Weimar Republic, become a strong democratic Germany and unite with the Allies against the Soviets...it will be like Red Alert and its going to be awesome :D

Hope that answers your question

Yup .

Been reading through this off and on over the past couple days, and I have to say I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I think this is the first time I've seen someone do an AAR for a German monarchist restoration path in any of the HoI games, and both this mod and your writing do an excellent job of making it sound plausible. Hoping to see more soon! :)

This has been a great AAR!

Looking forward to where you go from here.

Thanks very much for the kind words and support guys...and yeah the ability to do many different alternate-history things like restoring the Kaiserreich are what make this mod one of my faves :)

Things are certainly staying interesting as we get nearer to the end of the 1920's...

aaand now its time for that extra chapter I promised for yesterday...

Chapter 19 (Jul-Dec 1927)
July 1927 got off to an uneventful start as in Budapest the Hungarian National Congress declared the Independence of Hungary from the Habsburgs in Vienna. The Hungarian half of the restored Dual Monarchy had become increasingly dissatisfied with the increased Austrian Hegemony within the Empire and Republican elements, who had operated underground ever since the conquest of Hungary in 1921 decided that the time was right to restore Hungarian Independence. The Second Hungarian Revolution had begun.

pnGzxoyvp

However, while the Hungarian Rebels were successfully able to secure control over most of their country they still found themselves surrounded on all sides by Monarchist Forces, especially since Slovakia, Croatia and Transylvania, the traditionally Hungarian-aligned regions, all remained loyal to the Imperial Government in Vienna. The well-trained Austrian Army made short work of the Rebels in Western Hungary and by the 14th of July Budapest was back in Habsburg hands...

pn3wGDz0p

...and then on the 18th with the Rebel armies in disarray the Hungarian National Congress surrendered. This Hungarian Revolution which was supposed to free the country from Habsburg rule had been a complete failure and had been crushed in just 16 Days. While the Uprising had been well planned enough to secure most of the Hungarian territory the reality was that a vast majority of people were content enough with being part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and therefore the Republicans gained little local support amongst their own people. The leaders of the Hungarian National Congress were imprisoned and it will be a long time before Hungarian Nationalism will be capable to threatening the stability of the Empire again.

Later in the month King Ferdinand I of Romania died from cancer at the age of 61. Ferdinand had fought on the side of the Entente in the Great War despite being from the House of Hohenzollern and had therefore chosen to fight against his own royal family in what had been a terrible betrayal. His young won Michael now succeeded him under a Regency and it was hoped that the boy would not repeat his father's mistake and relations could be repaired between the two Hohenzollern Monarchs. Although disputes over the Austro-Hungarian seizure of Transylvania could be an obstacle to that.

In September the Two-Year War in Arabia between the Saudis and Hashemites ended in a victory for the Kingdom of Hejaz. The remnants of the House of Saud fled into exile in Yemen while the now unified lands of Arabia were reformed by Hejaz into the Kingdom of Hashemite Arabia. While events in such an empty and desolate land would usually matter little to Germany, the betrayal of the Hashemites by the British after the Great War mean they could be a potential future ally for the Kaiserreich.

plfyuONBp

The second half of 1927 has proved to be extremely uneventful for Germany. However slowly but surely the recovery within Germany continues and keeping a close eye on foreign events will greatly help the Kaiserreich to identify potential friends when Germany finally moves to regain her honour from the arrogant Allies.

Author's Note: Yikes this chapter ended up being even shorter that I thought it would be, I probably should have just kept going a while longer with the last chapter and added this to that as I originally planned to.

Oh well...enjoy this new chapter anyway and it won't be long till the next one :)

Well further interesting news with Austria.

A valiant, if doomed, last stand by the Hungarians. Hopefully the swiftness of Vienna's reaction will keep other potential rebels quiet for the foreseeable future.

Hashemite Arabia is an unexpected development -- and undoubtedly not a pleasant one for the men in London.

Yeah everything interesting that's been happening lately seems to involve the Austro-Hungarians in some way, its been great fun to watch

Yeah a quick crushing of the Hungarians was important for the Habsburgs as a drawn out conflict could have led to Uprisings all over and of course a possible re-ignition of the Balkan tinderbox.

And of course the presence of a potentially hostile Hashemite Kingdom on the doorstep of their main oil sources could become a problem for the Allies that Germany could take advantage of in the future.

How much more IC are you going to recover via repair? Given that much of the Ruhr is in hostile hands, I would guess not much more via recovery.

Yeah my IC situation isn't going to be amazing until I go to war...best I can do in the meantime is just build as many factories as I can until the Interbellum penalties are gone

Time for the next chapter...

Chapter 20 (1928)
Looking at the map of Europe at the beginning of 1928 shows that while the strength of the German Military is increasing, making it easier to defend their borders, the hostile nations on the other side of these borders are still militarily superior but they may not be long as the Kaiserreich grows stronger and more capable every day.

poGV2T5bp

Meanwhile, China was gripped by a famine that ravaged many of the nations Northern Provinces. Government attempts to aid the ailing citizens in those regions were insufficient and the suffering would continue.

poqi297wp

Back in Germany the Government's Battle against Unemployment continued and was seeing some great success. Unemployment was at its lowest since the Great War ended and less and less German people now found themselves living in poverty. Germany continues to regain its lost potential to the delight of the Government and the Kaiser.

plRQB9a0p

In France there was a new General Election of which the results proved concerning for Germany as the ruling Radical Socialists were defeated by the Centre-Right Democratic Alliance and Raymond Poincare, the French President during the Great War, became Prime Minister. With Poincare once again holding power in France it seems likely that this new Government will attempt to renew their efforts to keep Germany weak as the previous Government had loosened their stance somewhat. Politicians in Berlin wait to see what the French will do now.

poKNxLlTp

Meanwhile there were rising tensions amongst the Austrian puppet states in the Balkans as the Pro-Independence Croatian Peasant Party starting growing stronger in the Duchy of Dalmatia. When in June the Party's President Stjepan Radic and other leading party members visited the Duchy of Raska to seek an alliance with Serb Nationalists, agents of the Pro-Habsburg Government in Belgrade located the Croatian dignitaries and shot them dead. While this assassination will weaken the Croatian Peasant Party for the time being it seems unlikely to be permanent as Nationalist movements in the Balkans continue to operate and grow in strength. This is something that is sure to be a headache for the Austro-Hungarian Empire for the foreseeable future.

po506Yrpp

In August, the latest General Election in Germany was held. The Zentrum Party overtook the DKP to become the largest party in the Reichstag. After these elections the Kaiser appointed the War Hero and Lion of Africa, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, as the new German Chancellor. Lettow-Vorbeck's exploits in the East African Theatre during the Great War are well known to all proud Germans and he gained increased renown last year after he and his men successfully hunted down and killed former Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler who had escaped from prison. Lettow-Vorbeck is believed to have personally killed the former political activist and it is this decisiveness that makes the German people confident that this hero's Chancellorship will guide the Kaiserreich into a new golden age.

Later in the month a Treaty was signed in Paris between French Foreign Minister Aristide Briand and US Secretary of State Frank Kellogg resolving to never again use war to settle disputes between nations. This so-called Kellogg-Briand Pact was later signed by several other nations friendly to the Allies although this did not include Germany. However, the fact that France and other Allied nations seem so determined to never again repeat the destruction of the Great War is interesting since it suggests that in the near future they may be more willing to return stolen territory to Germany instead of starting another war.

po5Z5jtNp

As 1928 comes to an end the future looks bright for Germany with an ever improving economic and military situation, the dominance of former enemies fading and of course a new strong Head of Government. With how things are now 1929 could be the year Germany regains their position as an economic and military powerhouse in Europe.

Von Lettow-Vorbeck is, I believe, one of the true heroes of the 20th century, whom one can admire across borders and across time.

And of course, as is the way with these things, criminally underknown in the English speaking world.

Count me as another who's chuffed at seeing the Lion of Africa get his day in the limelight :)

One can hope that the Kellogg-Briand Pact signals a new era of peaceful cooperation and dispute resolution -- but with the election of Poincare and his supporters, France is very much sending out mixed messages here. And, of course, the Balkans remain tense as ever...

It is very true that Von Lettow-Vorbeck is criminally underrated as a military leader and all round badass when he definitely remains in the same category as the likes of Teddy Roosevelt and Lawrence of Arabia. When writing this chapter I just knew he had to be the one to finally kill Hitler, as if he wasn't already badass enough haha

Also, anyone who reportedly told the jumped up twerp that Hitler was to go and do the anatomically impossible has to be good :D

Agreed, even better when you remember that he supposedly didn't put it that politely...oh and the fact that he got away with it of course XD

Great! Congratz!

Thanks a lot for your work. I hope in the new version you will find even more interesting countries for your AArs.

Just wanted to pop in for a moment and let you know I've nominated you for this week's WritAAR of the Week!

Wow thanks very much for the nomination, its greatly appreciated :D

Thanks very much...and yeah looks like I'll have plenty of ideas for future AAR's in the next version of the mod, you've done great work and I'm definitely looking forward to it :)

Welcome to the latest chapter of this story...

Chapter 21 (1929)
As 1929 began Germany was recovering internally so it was now time to begin looking outward, despite Allied commitments to pacifism in recent years the Government in Berlin was still certain that they would still eventually start a war to prevent Germany from regaining her rightful land. Frequent border skirmishes with the so-called German Republic in the Rhineland had seen their shared border becoming increasingly militarised and this led to the construction of a massive line of fortifications on this border that would become known as the Luttwitz Line after former Chief-of-Staff Walther von Luttwitz. Luttwitz had lost his position in the mid-20's due to allegations of having Nazi sympathies but he had long since been vindicated of such charges and was once again heavily involved in the improving and modernising of the Deutsches Heer. The building of this line would help if the next war finds Germany fighting on two fronts again as these fortifications will aid them in holding off the Western Allies while achieving a quick victory over the Intermarium to the East, hopefully with Austrian support.

poH9b6dtp

Not long after there were further military development as the argument over the tactical doctrine for future conflict was decided. For several years now the senior members of the German General Staff had debated between tactics centred around superior firepower and those based on mobility and swift advances. The more traditionalist officers favoured the firepower doctrine while the mobility doctrine was supported mostly by younger officers such as Heinz Guderian, who pointed out the success of such tactics during the Spring Offensive in 1918 as well as the Austro-Hungarian Army's 'Blitzkrieg' against Italy in 1926. Eventually support for the Mobility Doctrine won out as the traditionalists saw the potential for such tactics as a way to achieve a quick victory on one front, something the Deutsches Heer would desperately need having failed to achieve such a victory in 1914.

The Allies were clearly concerned about Germany regaining stability and the efforts to improve her military as they chose now to demand a hefty lump sum of reparations. The decision about whether or not to hand over this payment was hotly debated in the Reichstag with many doubting that the Allies would take action should the Kaiserreich refuse to pay up. These debates dragged on for about a week by which point the British decided to force the issue, deploying the Royal Navy to the North Sea and threatening a complete trade embargo against Germany should she refuse to pay. Seeing that for now not paying the hated reparations would do more harm than good, Berlin conceded and agreed to pay this round of reparations. As expected this decision did not prove popular with the German people as the restored Kaiserreich was supposed to stand up to the Allies regarding the terms of the Versailles Treaty. This disappointment will not be repeated as the Government is now even more determined to prevent a repeat of this crisis in the future.

pmWTFE6Op

In Mid-September there was concerning economic news from America as the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined. Hopefully this is only a temporary problem as an economic crash could have a major effect on Germany, whose own economy is already weakened by the reparations payments to the Allies earlier in the year. This situation will be closely watched in Berlin.

pmWSCsU7p

In the East Asia there was further conflict as the Soviet Red Army had been fighting a border war with Zhang Xueliang, a Chinese Warlord who served the Republic of China. This conflict, which had been ongoing since July, was being fought for control over the Chinese Eastern Railway which had been under joint supervision between the two countries since 1924. By October the Chinese, after some early success, had been defeated by the USSR and after a ceasefire it was agreed that the Chinese Eastern Railway would return to joint supervision.

pmWh6xBOp

In Early December Germany's greatest fears were realised as the decline of stock prices in the US continued to worsen and led to a disastrous economic crash in Wall Street. Germany still had some unpaid American loans and it wasn't long before the US Government was demanding these loans to be repaid now. This could be disastrous for the German Economy...

pnBCluUIp

...and sure enough the struggle to repay these loans led to Germany suffering their own economic crash. Germany, however, was far from alone in this as almost every country in the world was affected by what became a global economic crash. Within weeks of the German crash there was a dramatic rise in unemployment, a sharp decrease in trade and an almost complete halt to Germany's ongoing program of Industrial Expansion. The Government tried to weather this storm and used what little money remained to aid those worst affected by the crash but it was nowhere near enough. The Great Depression had begun.

pmqaEgf4p

With this economic crash the general feeling of optimism that had grown stronger amongst the German people in the last few years disappeared in a matter of weeks as many now didn't even know where their next meal was coming from. As the 1930s begun the future once again seemed bleak for Germany, although this time they were far from alone in this feeling.
