So anyway, quick little announcement...for those of you who may or may not have been worried that the German Empire path wouldn't work with the Intermarium existing well I'm glad to say that in my playthrough I have just reached the end of 1923 and the Independent Prussia has been formed so that won't be a concern thankfully. Anyway, back in 1921 the next chapter should be up in a few hours so stay tuned!

Aasaand now its time for the next chapter...

Chapter 4 (Jan-Jun 1921)
The year of 1921 began with some cause for optimism for the constantly unstable Weimar Republic with the Rhineland back in German hands and despite the continual political bloodshed there was still somewhat of an improvement in the quality of daily lives for the average German citizen. Although with the Weimar Government there is always another crisis waiting to be mishandled by the ineffectual leaders in Berlin.

pljTCpvVp

To the East, fears of a possible Habsburg Restoration or a renewal of revanchism from the successor states of the defunct Austro-Hungarian Empire led to the formation of the Little Entente between Czechoslovakia and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats & Slovenes. France were also supportive of this alliance as it helped keep the nations of the defeated Central Powers weak.

po5IKUAsp

Meanwhile in Italy, there was rising political violence as a series of strikes and agitations by Communist activists became more and more common. In late January the Italian Communist Party was formed, creating rising fears that Italy would be the next European country to fall to Communism.

plxXg0Ytp

To the East, fears of another Soviet Invasion of Ukraine leads to the Ukrainian People's Republic taking steps to reorganise their military to help them effectively combat the Red Army should they need to.

plVQcrj9p

In late February the nation of Argentina withdrew from the League of Nations over disputes with other members. Maybe the League isn't as united and effective as originally thought.

poVhzepep

Not long after, many Western nations began opening diplomatic relations with the Russian SFSR having earlier refused to recognise the Bolshevik Government while aiding their enemies during the Russian Civil War. The British even went as far as to establish a Trade Agreement with the Soviets.

pl7RdFdEp

In the Middle East the British began the process of ending direct rule over their Mandates in the region. In late April Transjordan became the first British Mandate to be given self-rule under a Hashemite King.

pnuFqMsop

Back in Germany, the start of May saw the resignation of Chancellor Fehrenbach and his cabinet over issues relating to the hated reparations still demanded by the Allies. A new Government was soon formed under the Finance Minister Joseph Wirth who would inherit a country with a economy that is declining ever more rapidly.

pop9e6ENp

Not long after there was yet another Polish Uprising in Silesia, the third in as many years. This Uprising was larger than the previous two and the German Forces in the region suffered some heavy casualties. Soon the League of Nations demanded a ceasefire and would occupy the region themselves before organising a plebiscite on whether Silesia would remain German or be unified with the Intermarium. The plebiscite would take place in a weeks time and its results were awaited eagerly in Silesia as well as both sides of the German-Polish border...

pm3u8VnFp

...It wasn't long until the big day came and it proved to be a victory for the Germans living in the region as a majority of people in Silesia voted to remain with Germany. Of course the downside was that the region would gain even more autonomy and it seems unlikely that the Silesian Poles will stop these rebellions until they have achieved their goal of taking this valuable region away from its rightful owners.

poVnLuxYp

This good news was soon followed by much worse news as the pressure of trying to keep up with the reparations payments mercilessly demanded by Britain & France led to the German economy spiralling out of control. Attempts to fix the problem by printing more money only made the situation drastically worse and led to a Hyperinflation. The German Mark became more and more worthless and led to widespread panic throughout the Weimar Republic.

pmq68zMOp

As a result of this Hyperinflation riots and political violence became even more widespread. The Weimar Government often resorting to deploying the Reichswehr to deal with extremists as the police became overwhelmed. By the end of May the Army was reorganised to better help them deal with these domestic threats.

pmnIf91Dp

In North Africa a Berber Rebellion broke out in Northern Morocco in the parts under Spanish Colonial rule. The Spanish struggle to deal with the Berbers guerrilla tactics and suffer several defeats. The Berbers soon establish the breakaway Rif Republic and prepare to fight for their Independence.

pnYn4LUXp

As June comes to an end the Weimar Republic is once again teetering on the verge of chaos with internal dissent at its highest since the Great War ended. Maybe this is the spark that is needed for the German people to cast the failed Weimar Republic into the dustbin of history and restore German honour and prestige on the world stage. Time will tell what these events will lead to and maybe there is still a chance for the German Reich to rise again like a phoenix from the ashes and regain its old power from her jealous neighbours.

Yeah no matter what happens the Germans are gonna have a tougher time in WW2 here than they would in OTL...on both the Eastern & Western Fronts, I do look forward to it though cos either way it'll be enjoyable.

Doesn't Intermarium get the opportunity to fully incorporate the eastern puppets before 1939 though?

The Intermarium is kinda a pushover. Once Germany invades, the eastern puppets break aways

Honestly its been a long time since I've played this mod before now so I don't remember exactly how things can go for the Intermarium in the 1930's and beyond...they aren't exacly someone who exist in every playthrough haha...but I am excited to see what they do next.

Yeah I'm up to 1925 now in the playthrough and some of those have already happened, also one that isn't on that list that happened.

It will be interesting to see what the East Ukrainians do if the Central Regions get integrated directly into the Intermarium

Anyway, it's time for the next chapter to see how the remainder of 1921 goes for the Weimar Republic....

Chapter 5 (Jul-Dec 1921)
As Germany entered July internal problems continued to as the political instability seemed endless. In Bavaria the Far-Right NSDAP, now known more commonly by the nickname 'Nazis' continued to grow in strength. By the end of the month the party had a new leader, a charismatic former Corporal named Adolf Hitler, this new leader's rousing speeches against the Weimar Government won him much support, especially in Bavaria.

pmisphqNp

Meanwhile the British were dealing with their own internal problems as the Irish War of Independence continued. The island of Ireland had been plagued with trouble since the failed Easter Rising of 1916 and the British authorities continued to struggle against the Irish Republican Army and their guerrilla tactics.

plGnf8S3p

In the Middle East not long after the British granted self-rule to the Mandate of Iraq with Faisal I, a son of the Grand Sharif of Mecca, being crowned King of Iraq. Faisal had previously been King of the self-proclaimed Arab Kingdom of Syria which had attempted to break away from French rule but was promptly defeated.

poQ2ummSp

Further south, the Kingdom of Nejd declared war on their neighbours the Emirate of Jabal Shammar as the first step of their quest to unify Arabia under the rule of the House of Saud.

pmBklcGcp

Much closer to home there were some interesting developments south of the border as in Austria there was a successful Monarchist Coup against the weak Republican Government in Vienna...

plMcU6ayp

...not long after the last Habsburg Emperor, Charles I, returned from exile at the Invitation of the new Austrian Government and on the 7th of September 1921 he was officially crowned 'King of Austria'. The Habsburg Monarchy was restored and in Germany this news was greeted with jubilation by Monarchists who became more determined than ever to seek the restoration of their own deposed monarch. It wouldn't be long before the new Austrian Government began providing limited covert aid to German Monarchists, surely someday the wartime Central Powers will be restored and they would gain their revenge on the arrogant Allies.

plzqIhoVp

However, it remained to be seen how the Allies would respond to these developments but despite threats of war from the nations of the Little Entente it was soon clear that neither Czechoslovakia or Yugoslavia were willing to start a war to prevent this restoration. As for the wartime Entente nations Britain & France introduced a series of sanctions against Austria but they too were unwilling to start a war. Meanwhile Italy, who were embittered towards their former Allies due to their failure to honour their wartime territorial agreements, was unwilling to sanction Austria and instead seeked to improve relations with their former ally-turned-enemy. The unwillingness of the Allies to take decisive action to reverse this Habsburg restoration showed that, for all their bluster, they didn't desire another full-scale war to keep their former enemies weak. This created an increased determination amongst the various extremist factions in Germany that seeked to dismantle the hated Versailles Treaty. In the long term this was excellent news for Germany and the Monarchist cause but in the short term would lead to increased Anti-Government activities against the leaders of the Weimar Republic who made no move to officially recognise the new Austrian Kingdom.

plZxLb3fp

plsHm1yPp

Later in September there was a major industrial incident as a massive explosion occurred at a ammunition plant in Oppau on the left bank of the Rhine. As a result of this explosion over 500 people were killed and over 2,000 injured. Meanwhile on the other side of Germany authorities in Silesia arrested Soviet agents who had been caught trying to supply arms to Communist activists in the region. It is obvious that Soviet Russia is trying to exploit the unstable situation in Silesia and use the region as a starting point for another Communist Revolution in Germany. Thankfully their attempt has failed for now but it is unlikely to be the last time they try to destabilise the Weimar Republic.

poQ0urNHp

However, the Russian SFSR have their own problems at home as a disastrous famine occurred in Russia in Early October. Millions of people died as a result of this famine which mostly affected Tatarstan and the Volga Region. The severity of this famine was undoubtedly as a result of disastrous Communist policies and the Civil War. Thank God that the Communists failed to gain power in Germany after the Great War or this might have been this nation's fate too.

plBRqZsYp

podoLB9Pp

Not long after there were further developments south of the German border as Austria declared war on Hungary in order to restore the old Dual Monarchy. Once again the Allies took no action to prevent this. Meanwhile in Arabia the Kingdom of Nejd defeated and annexed Jabal Shammar to take one more step towards unifying Arabia. Surely it will only be a matter of time before war breaks out between Nejd and their western neighbours, the Kingdom of Hejaz.

pmCmHdlup

In Eastern Europe, the Intermarium's expansionist intentions continued to grow as they demanded the submission of the Baltic Republics of Latvia & Estonia. This was part of the Intermarium's aim to control a large territory stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea...

pmNdqWXYp

...Not long after Latvia & Estonia, seeing that they had no foreign support and possibly concerned about another Soviet Invasion, both agreed to submit and join the Intermarium. In Germany they can only wonder when this continually expanding state will target Silesia, Pomerania or East Prussia, it may only be a matter of time.

poMlriu2p

To the south, by early November the Austrian Army reaches the gates of the Hungarian capital of Budapest. Surely now it is only a matter of time before Hungary is defeated and the Dual Monarchy restored.

pmrXO7KAp

Meanwhile, the nations of the wartime Allies attend a conference in Washington DC focused on disarmament and naval limitations as a way of preserving peace amongst nations. However, the allies weren't as unified as it seemed as there was increased suspicion towards Japan as the other allies feared their growing expansionism in the Far East.

pnKq7XNOp

While the Allies were talking about peace and disarmament in Washington, the war in Hungary continued. On the 14th of November the Austrian Army entered Budapest after a bitter week of fighting around the city...

plLAey1Tp

...just four days after the Fall of Budapest the Hungarian Army, faced with the defection of many Pro-Monarchist officers, capitulated and soon the war was over. Not long after the Dual Monarchy was officially restored with Charles I being crowned King of Hungary. Just three years after its dissolution, the Austro-Hungarian Empire returned to the map of Europe.

pnrvKjVZp

pnZQDgIep

Not long after, a new war started in Eastern Europe as Finland declared war on Soviet Russia in defence of the breakaway Republic of East Karelia. Since Finland was one of the few countries that could be considered friendly to Germany, it was hoped that the Finns could emulate the Polish success of the previous year and achieve a victory that would further weaken Soviet power in Eastern Europe.

pl1MT47qp

After an uneventful December 1921 came to an end with the internal situation in Germany still chaotic. However, events outside of Germany are a great source of optimism for German Monarchists as the restoration of Austria-Hungary brings greater hope that one day in the very near future the Kaiserreich will be restored. Now Germany looks forward to see what 1922 will bring.

It's really looking to be an interesting "interbellum"

Oh yeah this might be one of the most interesting PwV playthroughs I've ever done, so many things have already gone differently from real life at this point in the AAR its amazing...and we haven't even got to the restoration of the German Empire yet haha

Event "German Exodus"

Oh yeah I know I've already done it by now in the playthrough...I was just saying how cool it is that so many events have already gone differently than OTL by the start of 1922, almost two years before I'm even gonna get to the German Restoration in this AAR

Has Intermarium restored the monarchy?
No, as far as I know, the Intermarium is just the Polish republic in that regard, so it gets all the political developpements Poland gets throughout the era

Speaking of the start of 1922...its time for the next chapter.

Chapter 6 (Jan-Jun 1922)
As a new year dawned on Germany the troubled nation remained sandwiched in between the vengeful French to the West and the expansionist Internarium to the East. However to the South the growing power of Austria-Hungary is a potential ally should the German monarchists achieve their goal of a restored Kaiserreich.

poKiCFsIp

However, at home the German economy is still in shambles as the currency becomes more worthless. Also the Weimar Government continues to adhere to the terms of the Versailles Treaty in regards to military restrictions. Apparently they have learnt nothing from the Allied failure to prevent the reformation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, yet another in a long line of unforgivable failures by the Social Democrats in Berlin.

potIn1mAp

Meanwhile, in the Far East the Russian SFSR begins to make new friends in war-torn China as the Government in Moscow decides to begin providing economic assistance to Sun Yat-Sen's Constitutional Protection Movement in its struggle with the various warlord cliques that are competing for power in China. The possible spread of Communist influence to China is a worrying prospect.

poyHkNj7p

In the Intermarium the greatest minds in the growing union come together and begin a program of scientific advancement. The Intermarium clearly seeks to become a technological superpower that will be powerful enough to dominate their weakened neighbours indefinitely.

poemiIbxp

Just a few days later, there is a diplomatic victory for the Intermarium as the League of Nations settles in their favour in the dispute with Czechoslovakia over the Kattowitz Region. Meanwhile further East the Soviet-Finnish War continues and despite the Finns occupying Murmansk the Red Army has gained the upper hand, having made a major push south of Murmansk and threatening to cut off Northern Finland from the rest of the country. Soon Kestenga is captured and the breakaway Republic of East Karelia ceases to exist...

pm8dO8Ptp

...with Kestenga lost and the Red Army having gained a clear upper hand the Finnish Government requests an Armistice with the Soviets. However the Bolshevik Government refuses peace and vows to continue the war until Finland is brought fully under Soviet influence.

popGSGXSp

Meanwhile, it would seem that all is not well within the Intermarium, particularly in their puppet state of Ukraine where many civilians opposed to growing Polish influence over their country riot with Ukrainian authorities struggling to keep control. This situation was watched with great interest in Germany as it showed that the Intermarium had weaknesses that could be exploited by those who would want to bring this dangerous Union to an end.

pmcICqBCp

Around the same time, the Treaty of Kars was signed between Soviet Russia and Turkey which settled the border between the two nations in the Caucasus.

pmQqkbavp

Further South the British ended their Protectorate over Egypt and granted the country Independence. However, Britain would retain a military presence in Egypt and would also keep direct control over the Suez Canal and other key areas.

poeZ7KPNp

Back in Finland the Red Army continued to make massive advances. In the North Soviet troops reached the border with Sweden and cut off several Finnish Divisions to the North, although the Finnish defenders of Murmansk continued to resist bravely, fending off several Soviet attacks and inflicting massive casualties on the Red Army. Further south the Soviets captured Viipuri and continued to advance West towards Helsinki.

pmjlpM6pp

In March the Weimar Government signed the Rapallo Treaty with Soviet Russia, renouncing all territorial claims against each other. The two countries would begin normalising relations and begin economic and secret military cooperation. This treaty might bring some short-term benefit to Germany and was well received by many, but surely this treaty will only make it easier for the Soviets to influence Communist movements in Germany which could bring disaster to this nation.

pl92Bhvxp

By April, the Nazi Party was continuing to draw in new followers thanks to the speeches and rallies of Adolf Hitler. It was around this time that a businessman named Ernst Hanfstaengl first attended one of these rallies and this would lead to him becoming a committed follower of Hitler. Hanfstaengl would later introduce Hitler to many influential Bavarians which helped spread the influence of the Nazi Party who were becoming a very dangerous force in Bavaria and also across Germany.

pnm2seTwp

In May, the Washington Naval Conference that had been ongoing since the end of the previous year came to an end with the signing of the Washington Naval Treaty between the USA, Britain, France, Italy and Japan that saw all five of these nations commit to limiting the size of their navies.

pnqqsSOWp

In June the Soviet-Finnish War came to an end as the Red Army entered Helsinki. Finland surrendered and after a short time under Soviet occupation the Democratic Republic of Finland was established as a puppet state. The fall of Finland to Communism created heightened fear particularly in the Scandinavian countries and the Intermarium who saw that their old Soviet foe had recovered from their defeat in the Polish-Soviet War and were beginning to rise in power in Eastern Europe.

pmlH2Ufbp

poOKWEPHp

In China a short conflict between the Zhili & Fengtian Cliques ended in a Zhili victory and resulted in Zhang Zuolin losing the power he had held in Beijing. the growing power of the Zhili Clique was also seen as a cause for concern with the Constitutional Protection Movement to the south.

poa9Dj2Vp

Following the defeat of the Fengtian Clique, the Japanese ended their Invervention in Manchuria and returned occupied areas of the region to the Fengtian Forces. Japan's mainland territories were now reduced to just Korea and Port Arthur.

pmbW98wSp

So far 1922 has been a comparatively quiet year for Germany although the problems that had plagued Germany at the start of the year continued and it is obvious that the political divisions in the country have increased ever further with both the Nazis and the KPD continuing to grow in power. A Civil War in Germany remains a real possibility but in the event of that occurring the monarchists are ready, waiting for the extremist thugs to do battle with the useless government, waiting to restore a German Reich that will rise out of the chaos and bring Germany back to the great power it was before the war.
