So, by that rationale, will each country have a different TOE? I don't see that happening, unless (highly unlikely) the player is allowed to fashion what's in the individual battalions.

I sincerely doubt it, but it maybe something that can be modded in.

Also, I noticed in the screenshot that its 30 tanks per company. 20 would be most accurate since the game doesn't simulate HQ tanks. Tanks divisions AFAIK were pretty much always Tank company -> tank battalion -> armored division. There were no tank regiments like infantry regiments*. I think the game lets you build tank companies, support companies, but battalions are the smallest unit for infantry.

*The germans organized their panzer units into a regiment, but usually only had 1 regiment per division.

Correct, a single panzer RGT, but multiple battalions...

It'll be interesting to see what they do with it.

They always have good mods... personally, I love the Black ICE mod for HOI3... guess we'll see what happens.

1 armored battalion has 60 tanks in it. The screenshot mdw1985 linked is an old screenshot, the number was raised since then.

Lots of nations had armored regiments. Italy, Germany, UK, Hungary comes into mind instantly, and I'm pretty sure most other nations also had them.

Yes but a British armored regiment was only about equivalent in strength to a US tank battalion. A troop being equivalent to a company, and a squad to a platoon.

http://www.kerynne.com/games/BritishArmouredRegimentTOE.html

Let me put it another way. An armored division usually had no more than 12 tank companies total. It makes sense for the base unit in the division builder for hoi4 to be a tank company, not a battalion. In infantry division OTOH usually had 9 to 12 battalions, or 27 to 36 companies. A tank company is in a sense equivalent to an infantry battalion for a grand strategy game.

Actually in 39 they had two regiments. They cut it half to create more panzer divisions.

Lol...

In my research, a battalion of tanks was usually 42... 3 companies of 13 (platoon of 4, 3 platoons, plus company CO tank), battalion XO tank, battalion CO tank and battalion senior NCO tank... but that may change.

I read the left line as DIVISION level assets... a field hospital would be at the division level, not regimental/brigade, division artillery, division heavy anti-tank, etc.

In WW2 full strength tank battalions varied from 21 to almost 100 tanks, and companies from 5 to 22 tanks, depending on nation and year. In HOI4, building historical divisions will entail dividing the number of tanks in the TOE by 60 in order to determine the number of battalions that should be in the template.

Thus a late war British armoured division with 3 tank regiments and an armoured recon regiment would have 5 tank battalions in the template (more than 300 tanks), a pre war German panzer division with 2 regiments of 4 battalions would also have 5 battalions in its template (324 tanks) and a Soviet tank corps with 3 brigades each of 3 battalions would have 3 battalions in its template (195 tanks). 1941 German panzer divisions with 2-3 battalions could have 2-4 battalions in the template (tank strength varying from 143 to 265).

Been thinking about brigades myself.

My Arm Cav Regt

1 bn panzers
2 bns PzG
1 bn panzer recon
support companies: recon, logistics (or maybe signal), arty, AT, AAA

This is without having time to play with it and see if it is really cost effective in the game. Just a thought game right now until release....
