There's only light and medium tank divisions in the game...

That's the one. You could add heavy or super-heavy tank brigades to a light or medium tank division. This follows the historical practice by both Germans and Soviets of allocating their heavy tanks to independent formations which were assigned to tank divisions/corps.

This system, combined with the low place of basic heavy tanks in the tech tree, also means you can model the mixture of light tanks/tankettes with early heavy or heavyish tanks like the Matilda or Char Ib you found in early British and French armoured divisions.

You can see most of this stuff in the (otherwise disabled) tech tree in the demo.

SS is just a designation. There are one or two other threads about 'elite' troops - basically what people seem to think is that the experience and logistics features let you have pretty elite units as it is.

I *think* you can only have them in brigades.

But you also have light tank brigades... Hmmmm...

the light tank brigades you get when you research advanced light tanks. I think they represent light tanks used for infantry support. Yes heavy and SH tanks are brigade attachments only attachable to Med tank divisions. The semi modern tank is the top end of the med armor unit.

Yes, I believe so. Check out the add-brigade tooltip; it mentions the H Arm and SH Arm brigades.

Not every unit can get every type of brigade - there is a useful overview on the beta forum which we need to remember to publish on Jan 4. For instance, you wouldn't expect to be able to add a heavy tank brigade to a paratroop division.
The advantage of the brigade approach, in case it's not clear, is that it allows more subtle variation of your army, and gives an interesting choice between "more units" and "better uints". It's obviously important to check what the potential enemy is doing - e.g. if the roster shows the Germans are building lots of panzers, the Soviet player will want to have lots of anti-tank brigades...

This is correct. However, it's completely irrelevant since it has nothing to do with TheLand's question: "does that mean you can only get heavy tanks in brigades not divisions?"

Yes. Heavy tanks can ONLY be made in Brigades and can ONLY be attached to tank-divisions.
