hardcoded?

Hardcoded means it is part of the executable of the game... can only be changed by the programmer of the game, i.e. the Game Developers.

Whereas you could think of the text files that belong to the game, that can be changed and modded by us players, as being soft-coded.

It'd be good if there was a tech line for airborne brigades, like extra equipment, small artillery and eventually things like jeeps... you could have gliders somehow.

It's not hard coded.

You can open paratrooper.txt in DH Full and remove the "#" before any brigade you want. By default, all brigades for paratrooper are disabled by those #.

I just allowed them to have Artillery, added paratrooper tech to GER 1936 to test, and it worked.

It's not too hard to make a glider or jeeps brigade, I think

My solution is to change
- R.Art (which is now Cav brigade) -> AA (so AA and SP AA is near each other, since SP R.Art was made SP AA)
- change AT (which is now M Tank Brigade) -> back to to AT (TD is seperate from SP Art, so no reason why AT the same as Art)
- group M Tank and L Tank brigades together in a new brigade category called "Tank brigade" (but allow the latest L Tank brigade to stay active and does not upgrade to M Tank, by using that new "-2" stuff)
- group SH Tank and H Tank brigades together as Heavy Armour (Super heavy is useless anyway, but make H stay active and not upgradable to SH)
- change SH Arm -> CAV (it's neat to have CAV before AC, as they have same function)
- That leave AA (freed) -> glider (paratrooper only brigade), add a bit of hard and soft attacks, plus org since it help concentrate landing and provide heavy equipments

So the brigade line in production menu is something like this

ART, SP ART, AA, SP AA, AT, TD, ARM, H ARM, CAV, AC, GLD, MP, ENG

Haven't tried it though = p
as I'm waiting for a newer version before starting to modifiy the game heavily to my thoughts

That leave AA as a free brigade and you can change the name to whatever you want, edit its name, description, icon, attributes, tech, and you'll have a glider brigade. Haven't tried it though

Woops, I misunderstood your question. I thought you asked if we could have paratrooper brigades.

Why would any land division need a paratrooper brigade attached to them? For what purpose?

Nope. I pitched an idea about Military Gliders, and even posted some working files to illustrate the idea, but it got totally ignored by the devs, and somehow got thrown into the "User mods" section... (?)

It's pretty easy to create new types of brigades. Can be done in a few hours.

If you want to try my work, you can copy these files View attachment 38762 into the correct folders in "Darkest Hour\Mods\Darkest Hour Full" (back up your files first)

I am too lazy to upload the improved and finished version that I'm using, so you have to:
- use Photoshop to make new pics for Military Gliders (obviously). I used the pic on Wikipedia
- rename pics in "Darkest Hour\Mods\Darkest Hour Full\gfx\interface\models" or else the pics will not appear correctly
- change the names around a bit in Models.csv (forgot to include it)
- edit AI files or they will build the wrong brigades (not totally necessary)
- edit country files in scenarios or they will start with wrong brigades (also not required)

But what brigade did you remove to put the gliders in?

Ah, yes, I changed

- Anti-Air to Military Glider.

- Rocket Artillery to Anti-Air (because Self-Propelled R.Artillery is already SP Anti-Air)

- Cavalry (which was R.Art) is assigned to Super Heavy Tank's place

- SH Tanks are grouped with H Tanks

Nothing was removed, and all brigade models' upgrade path stay the same, I think.

The brigade lineups looks like this

attachment.php

Art -> SP Art -> AA -> SP AA -> AT -> SP AT (TD) -> L/M Arm-> H Arm -> Cav -> AC -> MG (Military Glider) -> MP -> Eng -> ...

Hmm seems a bit wasteful to use one brigade slot exclusively for gliders...

Edit: I have an idea. what if Art and SpArt, AA and SpAA, AT and SpAT, Cav and AC, and all the tanks could be grouped under single individual brigades each? Then there would be 5 more free brigade slots!! (1 more slot if gliders are grouped under engineers) There would be the problem of when you build a unit only 1 brigade of each type is shown, but you could always manually build your brigades, its the same (or could have all non obsolete, buildable brigade model showing at the same time, Devs!). What does everyone think?

Art, AA, and AT have speed cap effects on units, shouldn't be grouped with SP ones.

If Gliders are grouped with Engineer, then land units with Eng allowed will also have Gliders allowed (not possible), while Paratroopers would be able to have Engineer brigade too (again, not right at all).

Anyway, why do you want 5 free slots? What for?
