Sorry for the many questions, but inquiring minds want to know....

So, I gathered up all of the various tools in the stickied thread at the top, and well....the bridefinders do not seem to work. The one by Subterranean gives me an error message, the one by Peter Ebbesen just pops up in a window then promptly closes itself, disappearing. The GUI for Peter Ebbesen's Bridefinder by ladyfabia came closest to working, so that's the one I figure I'm going to try to use....

Here's my error:
I'm using Windows XP, Bride Finder GUI seems fine. I select my saved game, input info (female, 16 to 25, Windows 98 box unchecked, sorting for breed), click proceed. The result button becomes available, I click result and get a pop-up "Run-time error '62': Input past end of file". What am I doing wrong?

This suggests to me that you don't know how to use the command prompt based programs (such as PE's bf or plock). Here is a short guide I've written for plock that you can help you also with PE's bf.

How to use command prompt programs.

Command prompt programs are not designed to be used with the graphical interface. Instead, they are text based: you need to use the command prompt. In XP you can get access the command prompt by choosing Start-Run, and then writing “cmd” and hitting OK. When you want to run a program you have to write the programs name and the the parameters you want to use in the command prompt and hit enter.

As an example, here is a step-by-step guide on how to install and use plock. The idea is the same for any other command prompt program (like Peter Ebbesen’s bridefinder)

First you have to install the program.

Step 1. Extract the program from the archive.

Step 2. Copy/Move the program to a folder that is in your command path. You can see the folders that are in your command path by starting the command prompt and typing the “path” command.
This will give you the list of folders (=directories), separated by semi-colons, in which the command-prompt (= the shell) will look for programs when you write program name in the shell.

Pick one, for example “C:\WINNT\system32” (if that is in your list) and cut and paste plock into your chosen folder.

Now you are all set-up and ready to go.

Using plock:

1. Start the command prompt

2. Use the cd (=change directory command) to “move” into the folder where your save games are. You can see the current folder in the command prompt, just before the input line. You’ll need the following commands:

a) dir – will list the contents of the current folder (=directory).

b) <drive>: (for example C: ) - will change the drive where the prompt acts. You don’t need this if your game is installed on the same drive as where the prompt starts.

c) cd – this command (short for “change directory”) will change the acting directory of the prompt. For example: “cd C:\Program Files\Crusader Kings\scenarios\save games”.

3. Use plock on your save games. For example:

a)
Code:
plock savegame.eug
Checks savegame.eug for young, unmarried women, and sort by stats.

b)
Code:
 plock –a 10 30 –c Swedish –w savegame.eug
Checks savegame.eug for 10-30 year old females (married or unmarried), whose culture is Swedish, and sorts by stats.

c)
Code:
 plock –h
Gives the help, and lists all the options.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I got the Bride Finder GUI to work. Seems the version of Microsoft Visual Basic which came with the rest of the files wasn't working with the new Windows XP updates. A fresh version from the Microsoft site did the trick, and now all is well. Thanks anyway.
