I should be able to promise other characters more than just money in exchange for increasing their opinion of me or their likelihood of joining a plot, coming to my court, or becoming my vassal.

I should be able to promise people knighthoods, baronetships, other honorary titles, landed titles, council positions, marriages (you can already do this, but not as a precondition for joining a plot or coming to your court).

I should be able to offer my liege things like extra tax and levies for x months, etc., in exchange for things like backing/allowing a plot, giving a title (or revoking a title and transferring it to me), allowing an attack on another of his vassals when CA is too high for me to do it unilaterally, backing my attack on another land, initiating a law change without rebellion.

In short, I should be able to make two-step deals. Quid pro quo, instead of just quid, please with a cherry on top, and here's 20 gold.

Knighthoods etc. are basically reflected by simply being present in the game, notably in a ruler's court. Remember that event in which a soldier distinguishes himself in battle and thus a soldier named this or that appears in your court? That's basically something like knighthood plus even more, as not everybody who simply got knighted on the field of battle was also made a royal companion.

However, I agree that diplomacy should include give and take, not only give and request. It's a major pity that there's no way to strike a mutual deal.

In short, I should be able to make two-step deals. Quid pro quo, instead of just quid, please with a cherry on top, and here's 20 gold.

Yes.

Agree absolutely. Mentioned this in a thread on the old forum, but a great example would be the trade/negotiation system from the old Galactic Civilizations game, where you could trade for or bribe someone to attack a 3rd party, to stop attacking a 3rd party, to break an alliance, and various other options. Basically, there should just be more ways to strike deals and bargains.

Weeeell, that does sound a bit like Nigeria scam, but if you win a holy war for Trebisond moments after it fell to Rum, it kinda makes sense to look for the Greek Komnenoi and reinstall them there. Or if you win an early crusade for Armenia or some parts of Syria when BYZ is still going strong, it makes sense to look up the Rubenids, Varajnuni etc. at the Byzantine courts to invite and reland them there as an alternative to dumping the titles on your younger brother and facing a Byzzie claim war. Same if you recover former breakaway vassals of this or that larger blob who got gobbled up by a neighbour with a holy war CB.

Promise mechanics can work, but need penalties for breaking them, and those penalties need to be an actual deterent and not easy to circumvent (yeah, I'll promise to make you a councillor... for a day).

Thats where it gets tricky.

This. If we can put things into the place where promises are effectively enforced (or ELSE) then this mechanic would be awesome. Otherwise it'll just end up as being exploited to heck and back.

There's already an opinion malus for firing someone from the council. Plus, there's already a mechanic whereby people will leave your court if their reason for being there expires, i.e. the death of a spouse. Combine those, and there you have it.
