Do you know what it means to do preemptive attacks?, that´s the answer to your question. Get rangers, put some 3 or 4 explore flags of 100-200-300 gold around your settlement, and put a kill flag on everything you see and, put at least, a 100 gold kill flag on everything you see near, get warriors and clerics, to do such thing so they can level up, they will kill everything around you for 100 gold but you have to be patient, a key virtue in majesty 2, kingmaker. Mages will do the same thing but as they are so easily to be killed they aren´t worth it. If you don´t want to be boetherede more , do that in a more expanded mode, problem solved.

This may sound stupid, but are you using the artifacts (located in the top bar of the screen) you reveice after some time?

I didn't read the advisor messages carefully and only realized that these artifacts are available after several unsuccessful tries. Afterwards I had no problem completing the mission.

i hope you are not using the randomize option, did you?, it increases difficultity considerably. Also, if you are receiving waves of attacks, put defence flags of 500 on the side where the attack is coming, that will make you heroes to do a better job for your defenses than anything, tends to be a well spent cash.

I still haven't beaten this one myself. Think I made it up to around day 37-38 on my best attempt then the game crashed while saving. Doh!

A couple observations:

I like to get a wizard's guild up right away. Two magic towers on the place where the vampire(s) approach from the south tends to keep them held up a good while. They really slaughter your young heroes without this. You don't want to ignore the crypts to the south forever, though. Also, the magic bazaar provides some fair income.

Furthermore, I put a wizard's tower and a couple guardhouses on the west flank of the castle. Helps to keep the liches held up for a while. You'll want to use the first artifact (forgot the name) when the liches and veteran undead cluster up. That tends to clear them out.

As for guilds, I've had reasonable success with 2 rangers , 2 rogue , 1 warrior, and 1 cleric to start. This might be overextending a little, though. I like to throw in the remaining cleric guilds when I can. You might question the choice of 2 rangers guilds, but when these guys hit level 10, they get a very useful area attack.

Beyond that, I agree with Ojcar. It's critical to get out there and destroy lairs quickly. Focus mainly on the lairs that have 1000 hp rather than 3000hp initially. Be sure to research the healing spell and keep a close watch on your heroes' health.

It's important to have some strong heroes for when the elementals start showing up around day 35. They'll tear right through your towers (even the dwarven ones) and buildings unless you're ready.

i have to disagree with you Player_of_Games on one part you didnt mentioned: what is critical in those maps is to use defence flags, 500 gold defence flags to be precise, why, because it´s the cheapiest ans easiest way to call your heros to defend the fucking kingdom they are a part of.... usually 4-5 heros will answer and that´s enough. Towers alone never do the job, unless you have 3 dwarven towers in the same spot. That´s what´s cool about Majesty 2, the call for defense, until you realize how critical it is, you won´t understand MJ" mechanics and the value of your own decisions to overcome supposedly impossible scenarios under your perspective. You have "to call your heros by money", to succeed... if you dont do that, you will spend many useful resources in rebuilding destroyed towers, instead of building or upgrading more useful things. Defense in majesty 2 is about your own perspective using flags mixed by towers´s capability to hold enemies, towers are like 40%, while heros does the 60% more important job in defending your town, if you PAY THEM for it... hahaa. Majesty 2 sucess is about undertanding psychology of your heros mixed with your own strategies. Understand your heros, and you will be able to lead them better.

Oh, I definitely I recognize the value of defence flags. You mentioned it up in post #5 already. Particularly useful once the elemental duos start spawning in the east and west. Anyways, this thread inspired me to give the map another shot and I finally beat it. I ended up using the initial guild setup I outlined in my first post.

I did eventually train some mages too. After my third cleric's guild went up, I trained two mages total (one at a time), using defence flags on them to keep them alive. Later on, after the temple to Agrela, I built a Temple of Ice and converted them to Ice mages. I have to say, their area spells came in pretty handy.

Glad to finally conquer this map.

i NEVER use defense flags on heros so just take my hints where they should be taken....

i use defense flags (of 500) on a peasant house, if the waves come that way... seriously. but only if they are serious waves. Put 100 gold attack flags on ogres, werewolves, dragons... ect..

I personally dislike defence flags other then on heroes as it keeps heroes from upgrading their gear and restocking on health potions.

I have beaten this map a couple of times and the trick for me was put all the guilds/ economic buildings on one side of the castle while get some guardtowers to defend the other side with the artifact when it comes available. As for heroes i relied on clercs much for their power against undead as they are the main invading force in the beginning and the healing always helps, mixed with some warriors and rangers. Later on training rogues, elves, dwarves and mages for more crowd control.

This strategy seems to work for me also with the randomization turned on, but sometimes you can get unlucky with the lairs:mad:

I beat this on my first go; it was a bit challenging, I did loose a few guilds, and quite a bit of heroes after like day 7 or 8 and until day 45 or something...that was the most difficult period for me.

I used defense flags perhaps about 3-4 times, on a few outer buildings, and sometimes they got lost before the heroes could rally. Once I was in the day 40s, defense flags were efficient to just rape the enemy, but by then the game was well in hand, so I can't say all the talk about defense flags being vital are that true.

I spammed guilds at the start for my first stage, just getting a mass of cheap heroes early on, leveling up, slowly killing lairs...then by like day 20 I was "Teching up" if you will, researching skills/armor, though I didn't get until tier 3 until like day 50 or so...I never got a magic bazaar until like one of the late 60s days, and by then it was because I was bored.

The key really was I played the game on 0.5 speed for most of the time, and utilized the artifacts very wisely.

Hopefully this helps; I don't see why this should be impossible for you to beat. I was expecting the waves to get harder, but actually once you got to a certain point, it evened out.

Player of Games, is that a Lunord Assassin I see in your screens? Looks neat.

But if you use the bought stuff, obviously things get easier than for us that don't, with the auto-learned powerful new skills for heroes...

I managed it after a struggle although it was horrible to say the least. I build 1 ranger guild, 1 wizard guild, 1 dwarf guild and 1 cleric guild put them in 3 parties and in last 15 days, recruited 2 beastmasters and 2 archers of helia who were a big help at the end. No elves, no warriors,no rogues. (Wasn't able to hold a single trading post but my funds were needed for survival of buildings and tech upgrades). My main point is it IS possible with a minimum number of heroes and no trading posts. (I don't recommend it though )

Player of Games (and others that managed it) ... how the heck did you manage to hang onto those trading posts? Dwarven towers? Don't they get too expensive? I doubt a couple of guard towers would cut the mustard somehow. Or did you use defence flags?

The explore party kept going out into the storm, searching for lairs to destroy (easier said than done when constantly hounded every step of the way), while the other two parties held the fort or went to buy stuff while my buildings got hammered on. I was spread pretty thin but after I destroyed a few lairs it did get a bit easier. The artifacts saved my buildings on numerous occasions.

Had a couple of dwarven towers on west side, and 2 wizard and 2 guard towers down south. Those towers needed a lot of babysitting though and they got overwhelmed towards the end with everyone already fighting. Chaos bears and stone incanation saved my life and kept me hanging in there in the last 10 days with speed on 0.2x. Yep.

One important thing anyone should be used to do is erasing defence flags when they are no longer needed. That happens often when u use the really needed 500 gold defence flags, no matter if there is still like 300 gold in the flag, sometimes is better to erase it so heroes can keep doing their things and contributing to a running economy.

And thats why i dislike them, its more micromanaging and baby sitting heroes and a big drain on your funds if you have to pay for the flags and only abut half ends up back in the economy. And espacially early on in the mission its money i rather like to spend otherwise...
