I had a hyperlane play and the borders don't make any sense when every species has hyperlanes as empires claim territory they don't have access to or would have a very roundabout route to reach.
Imo the FTL methods should have direct impact on how borders spread aka hyperlanes should only build up border pressure via hyperlane connections, wormhole stations probably only from their stations and warp limited from their colonies and outposts.
The hyperlane is the most obvious because it makes no sense in single ftl mode compared to the others but ideally all three modes have an impact how empires direct their traffic and thus their influence over patches of space.
