Damn right borders do matter, I don't mean the shapes or anything superficial but historical accuracy. The Petsamo area (the right 'arm') was not part of Finland until Tartu peace treaty of 1920,

Also from game point of view it is significant to have Petsamo as an independent province so there will be realistic borders This is not just meanless whining, it is a bug that should corrected in a future patch.

No it isn't as you yourself told us the Tartu peace treaty was in 1920 when Vic is over. Petsamo should play no role in Vic whatsoever, it should be part of Kola.

But this doesn't change the fact that borders can't be changed anymore. They were already when the last beta started, otherwise I don't think I would have let Paradox get away with it.;)

So, although the border is incorrect, this is in fact useless whining since nothing can be done.

Sorry if this issue has yet been brought up, but I gave a fast read to this thread.

The main problem I see with the current map model it's that Norway and Russia have not a common border (ok, except for a Russian agression on Finland)..

Yes I think that is the problem that some people are pointing out. I don't think i needs a new province just move that part over to the Russian province. That said I think it's too late to make those sort of changes so just don't sign BL and you won't have a problem:)

AFAIK there were no map changes in EUII or HoI after it went gold since the map file is really huge so I doubt they'll change the Vic map.

No offense, but IMO border in the game is never historical. Borders changedso frequent that the game can't stimulate. So forget about it. Just take a look on China when the game is out. I am sure the shape is weird...as usual.:eek:o

No, it's not that simple.

The map cannot please everyone, and it would appear to be a miracle that it pleases anyone.

It's not a question about pleasing someone. It's a question about historical accuracy. And I'm not talking about province names/spelling or even ownership, I'm talking about borders between countries. They aren't arguable (if we put projection things aside).

Of course on a province based map things get all ahistorical as soon as war starts, but that's no excuse for not having a historical starting setup.

I like accurate maps. Too bad developers don't put much effort in it. Finding such things like Belorus north of Lithuania in EU2 is rather disapointing.
I think (more) accurate maps in a history simulation game would be more than just a nice touch.

Yes, they definitely should. People shouldn't underestimate the importance of historically correct maps, even if the flaws didn't have any game-play effects.

Hmmm... finland did not exist as an independent country during the timeframe of the game until 1917, right? So for most of the game, this is not an issue. Now, have you wonder what are the chances that finland will come to life during a Vicky game? Slim at best. And even if so, what are the chances that it would come to life in any shape of form of the her historical situaton in 1917? As far as we know, it could be one or two provinces ..

I mean, do americans have the right to complain because in game the USA borders in, let's say 1878 are not historical?

Now it will be completely different if you were complaining of borders of countries that EXISTED in 1835. Historicity ends then.

Aren't you at least thankful that South America has so many provinces! It looks like about 3 or 4 times more than in HOI. Just squint a little bit........

Plus it looks like Chile has the opportunity to colonize southern argentina .... it looks like they don't start of settled....

If you read I think Argentina had all ready claimed the land, but had not begun to colonize it;) No clue how any of it works, but it did say something about claims.

Finland did not exist as an independent nation until 1917, but the same border was there even before it, as the border between Russia and Norway/Sweden. So in that respect it doesn't matter whether Finland is independent or not: the border is all wrong anyway.

And why do you say that there is only a slim chance of Finland becoming independent during a Vicky game? The independence wasn't just something that happened, it was the result of a purposive development. The borders of independent Finland did not come by any accident either: Finland had been in autonomous state during the whole time it had been a part of Russia. And by all means, a historical path should be the most probable path in Vicky too.

EDIT: Of course if WW1 goes differently for Russia, then the independence of Finland might be delayed even beyond the game time.

Exel, I'm not sure I quite understand your grief; are you dissatisfied with the way the border wiggles between provinces? That is, the way the border line is drawn?
