This was mentioned as a non-sequitur in another thread:

Seeing as this really effects hyperdrive species more than anyone, why not trace influence along hyperlanes from colonized/ frontiered systems?
Warp can keep its blobular expansion along with wormhole species, might that work better?

I really liked the idea of border expansion for a species changing based the FTL drive used, so I wanted to expand on their idea. Since the border is an area of influence and control for mining purposes. At the start of the game, the current border is a 2 week travel by warp. Since this is the default, we can base it off of that.

Warp - Bubble expansion based on the ability to warp to and from a populated planet. Half spread distance for Frontier Outposts.

Hyperdrive - Takes 2 days to get to a location that could take warp 17 days to make roughly the same distance. It's very fast. But, not all it's territory can be reached from another point. Thus it's my reasoning that at the beginning, these empires should begin with a strong claim on each of the adjacent systems and not spread any further. Represented on the map, this would be up to halfway between the nearest non-connected systems. Border influence battles would still happen, but these claims would act as the growth point. This would fix problems where I had territory but it was unreachable due to being 7 jumps away. Frontier Outposts allow for the same expansion pressure.

Wormhole - I'll be honest, I was disappointed when I actually played Wormhole. It's fun, but I was really expecting something like the Star Kingdom of Manticore in the Honor Harrington universe. (Basically Hyperdrive over very long distances with no local connections.) That said, I have played it a lot and it's fun, but it becomes a challenge on how to change the border growth. I say we get creative and give them a special type of Frontier outpost that costs half and allows the player to claim just that system. You've already got to build wormhole stations, let's just add another station for advanced play build resupply stations for the fleets and allow clear communication back to the main wormhole generator. This would truly allow Wormhole nations to be all over the place. Might even increase their range a bit.

I'd also like to see gradual border expansion based on planet growth mitigated and allow technology in the form of governance improvements increase border growth. I.e. Planetary Capitals, etc.

Re: Wormhole generators: perhaps have them generate their own bubble similar to the frontier outpost? Also have military versions of wormhole generators that would allow for enemy sector incursions?

Hmm... I wonder if it can be modded, but I'd like to play around the idea that wormhole generators can only be built within a military station structure. Wormhole using nations would start with Defense Platforms and the wormhole tech allows for wormhole generators to replace the aura option. This would help remove the spamming of wormhole stations by also increasing the cost and maintenance of having them out and allowing them to have a unique place. It'd be even more interesting if they could be then placed anywhere in the system. Would make it more like the Bajoran wormhole in DS9, which could be fun.

I think I would further increase their range with that change since they wouldn't be able to be built in enemy territory. That'd way they be what they should be with strategic points that have to be defended, but they can branch out more quickly that any other FTL type. Would have to put a modifier in there to reduce influence distance costs for Wormhole nations since it really isn't far at all with a single jump.
