Not sure if this is the right forum for this. Does anybody have an recommendations for books about WWII OOB's and division organization? I have done a little resarch and I've found three different series of books that look promising but can't find much in the way of reviews about them. The authors for these three are George F. Nafziger, Charles D. Pettibone and Samuel W. Mitcham Jr. Has anyone read the books by these authors that would recommend one over the other? Or are there better books out there on the subject? Thanks in advance.
Samuel W Mitcham Jr's book "Hitler's Legions: The German Order of Battle, World War II" is a decent broad overview on German divisions with a little section on each one, but it should not be used in isolation as it contains some errors. I haven't read his more detailed books, but from what I can see online they should contain extra information but, from reviews, I think there may still be some errors in them, so again I wouldn't be relying on them as a single source.
Nafziger's own books about the Germans contain a wealth of detailed information, but they are poorly presented and can be confusing. He lists detailed OB's down to the number of LMG's assigned to companies, but will mix in actual and theoretical organisations one after the other and it can take a lot of work to determine what organisation was in place at any particular point in time. There's also a lack of a table of contents in a number of his books meaning it isn't always quick to look up a particular formation. He also published a number of books written by other authors and wrote some himself about other armies. The quality of each book varies from almost as detailed as his work on the Germans to only broad overviews.
I'm not familiar with Pettibone's books.
