Hello. I am trying to play as Bohemia in 1.30.x, doing the Subjugate Brandenburg mission.

When I vasallise them, I get massive AE (around -85) with dozens of neighboring and/or HRE countries that all join coalition and declare on me later on. I understand this is just the expected standard behavior. So I am wondering if I am not missing anything with regard to this mission?

In my previous games I have found that the missions can help with the progress. E.g. as Portugal a player gets missions to conquer certain provinces in Africa. After completion, a player gets claims in other areas.

However, I am not sure what the point, or desired gameplay, for the mission above is. When I am strong enough to be able defend myself against a coalition like that, I will not really care or need a mission like that. Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Can you post a picture of the peace deal? The only reason i could think AE would be an issue is if brandenburg is ludicrously large or you have leftover AE from previous wars.

Improving relations can deal with -85 ae. Takes a while to do it with a bunch of nations around you, but seems worth it in that case. Even if you have to sit at war for years and maybe eat some war exhaustion. You also don't have to take all of Brandenburg in one war - cb's are options, all of them. You can take land, give land to allies, or try to arrange it so Brandenburg loses land in other wars by breaking their alliances and not full sieging them.

Anyway, the point is that you have options. Also, I think there was another thread discussing this, so you could find more info there.

I think you are (at least partly) right.

- They have 10 provinces (they start with 8) so they are a bit bigger.
- I have lots of AE with some of the countries (e.g. Austria is -55, and with -85 it would give -140). However, there are lots of countries where my AE is very small and they do join (because the -85 is massive anyway). E.g. Pomeria, Bremen, Cologne, Hamburg... have -4 => -89. I might test it and wait e.g. 2 years to have 0 AE with these countries to see if they are going to join anyway or not.

Thank you.

I have done the test. There a couple of countries that are mad at me (like Austria, who is my rival anyway) - and I would expect that these would always join.

But even the countries above, that have 0 AE go berserk.

Well, I will just do it in stages. I will force them to return 2 provinces they had stolen and maybe rip them apart first. Thank you guys for your help.

Did you go Hussite or Protestant? If you conquer Catholic provinces / subjugate Catholic nations as a heretic, other Catholic nations (in this case: probably everybody ;)) will hate you even more than if you were Catholic

During your next war, make sure to only occupy their capital and then repeatedly stack wipe their armies, by leaving unoccupied provinces their neighbours might war dec them aswell and seperate peace, reducing their size even further. After they are your vassal you can then do reconquest for brandenburgs cores.

You shouldn't have to rely on gamey tactics to be able to follow a basic mission path.

How would it be any less gamey if you got an HRE elector as a vassal for free?
Personally, if you miss your shot to nab northern hungary for the PU mission i would restart in OPs position.

I've completely overlooked that. Yeah, I was Hussite, then switched to Protestant. Everyone hates me (for now ;)).

I have forced Brandenburg to release/return 4 out of 10 provinces. So it should be easier to get them the next time.

However, I have gone through the whole mission tree and I see I have missed the Hungarian part. Poland has blobbed and snapped Slovakia from Hungary and they are too big. I might restart then.

It does not, PUs are simply a better vassal type to have to avoid them allying each other for greater liberty desire, making them way better to vassal feed with.

Subjugation of Brandenburg is best postponed until later. The moment you have PU with Hungary and Poland, you are scary enough even for a large coalition.
Even in the case of the giant Branibor, when AE is extreme, it works. Although then a preemptive attack may be in place before the coalition accumulates too much.
