Playing a game as the USA and it's about 1890 and I have something like 9 million soldiers in my population and the capacity for over 9000 brigades. Is this and expected result? Changing the military slider doesn't seem to have any effect on the rate of soldiery. The problem is that with so many soldiers, funding my military is darn near impossible without going into the red and I've only got 300 brigades. Loading up my save and looking at Great Britain shows me they have ~480 brigades and their capacity is pretty much the same.

I think part of the problem was that around 1880 a liberal party took over and that prevented factory subsidies. Most factories couldn't make a profit and my factory score went from ~1200 to ~200 in a month because pretty much all of them closed down. So what probably happened is all the out of work craftsmen and laborers saw the military as their only option because it meant a more reliable source of income.

weeding out unprofitable factories(canned food, oh my gaaawd) by yourself as Interventionist really helps. Eventually the fine gentlemen will build something profitable and then you can start NFing craftsmen.

You will end up with a large portion of your population as soldiers if you leave the slider set to 100% like that. You're best to drop it a bit, perhaps to a point where it is just sustainable at a number your are comfortable with.

If you reduce the military slider to 0% and encourage other forms of work (education/administration) then you'll likely have your soldiers gradually move over to other POP types. I guess you're just experiencing this problem just because you left the slider on max for so long, and made soldiering such an attractive career.

Thanks, I think you're right that it's because of my slider settings. I tried loading from an earlier save and setting it to 25% and things are much less out of hand. Also, NFing?
