And I have said that I dont like the autocratic president and is both against him and a monarch.
And you can see that I said that I'm opposed to a monarchy.

Hm.

I did propose the idea of a HM Monarchy to starve off the rar right movement
And yet again, my theory about installing a HM Monarchy will cripple the far right are proven..

Dear Howard, what's your stance on tuition fees for the record? :p

but after that you've done nothing but attacking DDP :p Just like in the other elections.

Attacking Hindenburg and his supporters - and let's not forget which two parties put him in power. :p

Nice to see the DDP is prepare to dispense with its principles as it sees fit. Shame it couldn't do that with its economic dogma as well...

The Election of 1920

As Germany rapidly approached the potentially epoch defining election of 1920 the Republican and Anti-Republican camps were becoming increasingly well defined. Yet, for the Centre Party the issue was extremely divisive. There has always been a monarchist wing within the party, yet in recent years it had grown greatly in strength – Papen’s rebellion in 1919 being the decisive factor that tipped the Presidential election towards Hindenburg – as the election approached it became clear that the party’s Republican left would find it impossible to share a platform with the monarchist right. This led to the emergence of two parties both claiming to be the true Centre Party, and both using its name going into 1920, usually known as the Centre Party (Republican) or DZP R and the Centre Party (Monarchist) or DZP M.

In contrast to the other main monarchist party, the DNVP, the DZP M was based upon a Southern electorate – primarily in conservative heartlands in Austria and Bavaria. The party was explicitly anti-Prussian, regarding the three Hohenzollern Kaisers as merely Prussian Kings who ruled over the rest of Germany rather than true German Emperors. In line with this thinking the party supported an alternative claimant to the Imperial throne – Karl von Habsburg. With the claim of the young Habsburg also supported by the Bavarian Wittelsbachs, the Southern alternative to a restoration of the Hohenzollerns carried great credence. Whatsmore, whilst the deposed Kaiser Wilhelm remained in exile in the run up to the election, Karl was able to move freely within the German Republic, campaigning for the DZP M.

The Referendum

Unlike previous German elections, 1920 came equipped with both a legislative election and a more significant referendum on the constitution. All German voters had the choice to vote on the following question:

Should President Hindenburg be given unlimited freedom to propose a new draft constitution to the Reichstag?

Should a majority of voters support the proposal, the President would be free to alter the German constitution in any way (including abolishing the Republic and restoring the monarchy), so long as he could ensure that any new constitution could be passed through the Reichstag by a simple majority vote.

All readers may vote either:

YES

Or

NO

On to the legislative election ...

Socialist Unity Party of Germany (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands)
- SED

Political Position: Left

Ideology: Social Democracy / Democratic Socialism

Party Leader: Philipp Scheidemann

Having entered the SPD as early as the 1880s, having become involved via the trade union movement, Scheidemann played a prominent role during the Revolution and was subsequently elected as an SPD Reichstag deputy. Always on the moderate wing of the party he was a staunch supporter of the alliance with the FVP and the Ebert leadership. The disaster of Paul von Hindenburg’s election as President in January 1919 had swung the recently formed SED back round to moderation, facilitating the rise of its new leader.

Description:

The Socialist Unity Party was formed on Mayday 1917; looking to fight for its core working class supporters the new party adopted a militant stand that eventually led to the breakdown of its alliance with the FVP and DZP. Although former leader Arthur Crispien came within a few votes of defeating Hindenburg in the 1919 Presidential election, his failure led to a rapid reversal in party policy, the leadership was changed as was the direction of the party as it returned to its Ebert era moderation and commitment to Republican unity.

Foreign Policy:

Germany must remain wholly committed to Democracy and Peace, opposing Imperialism and War at every turn! Even as the horrors of the Great War drift into memory, they can never be forgotten! Germany cannot allow them to be repeated.

Germany must act as a mediating figure in European politics, looking towards reconciliation with the French, Scandinavians, Russians and Italians and we attempt to avoid the outbreak of another major conflict. At the same time we should encourage democratic development across the continent – especially in the countries with close ties to our Republic.

Economic and Social Policies:

Let the fruits of the German economy to be passed down to all her people. We should seek the implementation of a heavily progressive system of taxation – reducing taxes on the poorest as much as possible and avoid all tariffs. These measures alone should noticeably improve the standards of living of the majority of the populace. Beyond this, the state shall play a prominent economic role – performing limited nationalisations where possible and investing the construction of new, modern, industries across the land with an emphasis on supporting the development of the poorer regions of the Republic.

We must also strive to significantly expand the network of social reforms, further improving the lives of our citizens. The SED shall secure a minimum of 3 social reforms.

Constitutional Change:

The SED advocates a NO vote in the referendum proposing a new constitution.

Do not be fooled into believing this is a referendum for fair and democratic constitutional change, should the referendum be passed Hindenburg and his far right cronies will have free reign to accomplish their long term dreams of abolishing the Republic. Should the referendum pass the history of German democracy shall soon come to an end and the monarchy, that vile institution that the German people so thoroughly vomited up scarcely two decades ago shall be forced back down our throats. The Socialist Unity Party says no!

We shall tirelessly act to defend the German Republic and the Weimar constitution! Opposing the referendum and rejecting any amendments to the constitution in the Reichstag. Long Live German Democracy! Long Live the Republic!

Free People’s Party (Frei Volkspartei)
- FVP

Political Position: Moderate Left

Ideology: Radical Christian Democracy / Christian Socialism / Social Liberalism

Party Leader: Adam Stegerwald

Since the foundation of the Republic in 1898, Adam Stegerwald has served three years as Chancellor and an incredible fourteen as President. No man so defined the Republican era as much as the Populist leader, who has been the face of German Republicanism for more than twenty years. The collapse of the alliance with the Socialists in 1918, and the victory of Hindenburg in 1919 significantly weakened his position within the party. However, following these twin disasters he has rallied his party around his leadership once more, repairing the alliance with the Socialists and preparing the Republican movement for battle in 1920.

Description:

The Free People’s Party had dominated the politics of the Republic. Although not especially large – its share of the vote not once 25% - in comparison to the other major parties, the FVP enjoyed a position within the German political spectrum that allowed it to place itself at the heart of the broad Republican coalitions that controlled government from 1898-1901 and 1905-1919 the party bridging the gap between Socialism, Centrism and Liberalism in a manner no other political formation could. Having lost power to the right in 1919, the very Republic that the Populists had built in their image was now under threat as the party looked to once more rally German Republicanism behind its leadership.

Foreign Policy:

Germany must ensure that it protects its hegemony over Central and Eastern Europe – it is vital for both the economic and diplomatic security of the German nation. An easing of tensions with the other powers of the continent may also be desirable; a war is in no one’s interests. However, Germany shall not be intimidated into sacrificing an inch of her soil or that of her allies.

As for the Bohemian Question, integration is of course highly desired – however Germany cannot achieve reunification through anti-democratic means. Until the people of Bohemia support reunification themselves, the special relationship between our two countries cannot be pushed any further.

The FVP supports a limited expansion of the armed forces by a further 60,000 men.

Economic and Social Policy:

We must institute a progressive system of taxation that shall ensure that the wealthiest bear the heaviest burden and the poor the lightest. The state should play a strong role in the economy in supporting projects aimed at industrial expansion financially – but only those with proven profitability. We should oppose the use of tariffs in any but the most extreme circumstances. Under the watchful guidance of the Free People’s Party the German economy has flourished, in spite of potential hardships, let the party most adept at managing the economy be restored to office!

All existing social reforms must be protected and a limited programme aimed at their expansion pursued.

The Free People’s Party shall guarantee a minimum of one social reform if elected.

Constitutional Change:

The FVP advocates a NO vote in the referendum proposing a new constitution.

All German democrats must rally around the flag of the Republic, to protect German democracy from Hindenburg and the sycophants of the Kaiser. Let us not forget the ruin that the Kaiserreich led us towards! Let us not forget the Kaiser’s tyranny embodied in the Kulturkampf, the Anti-Socialist Laws and the Military Government he established during the war – directly causing the unnecessary destruction of large parts of the German nation through his delusional desire to continue to war until the invaders were at the gates of Berlin itself! A yes vote means dictatorship; a yes vote means tyranny a yes vote means the return of the Kaiser!

The Free People’s Party shall oppose any attempts to alter the democratic constitution of the German Republic in the Reichstag and all other available fields.

For the Republic! For Democracy!

German National People’s Party (Deutschnationale Volkspartei)
- DNVP

Political Position: Hard Right

Ideology: Reaction / Monarchism / Conservatism

Party Leader: Gustav Stresemann

Stresemann accomplished what no DNVP leader since 1905 had in leading the party into government as he became the first ever DNVP Chancellor. The victory of Hindenburg facilitated a tremendous shift in German politics in favour of the monarchists, Stresemann’s prestige both within the DNVP and across Germany as a whole has never been greater. The Chancellor is hopeful that he will soon become the last Chancellor of the Republic, and the first of the restored Empire.

Description:

The German National People’s Party contains a broad church of opinion. On its right it contains arch-aristocrats, anti-democratic and longing for autocracy, yet on its left, from where its current leader is drawn, it contains the inheritors of the National Liberal tradition. The party is unified behind a singular goal – the abolition of the Weimar Republic and the restoration of the Kaiserreich, believing that by restoring the regime of the 19th century all the wrongs of the new century can be washed away. For the first time since the Revolution, the party has a genuine chance of achieving its goals.

Foreign Policy:

Germany must be prepared to protect Europe from revolution, and her sphere of influence from foreign interference. Should our enemies test us we shall not hesitate to strike back.

As the Communists, French, Italians and Russians draw ever closer together, it is becoming increasingly clear that a new Great War is inevitable. So long as Germany remains under pacifistic Republican government she shall not be ready to face this coming conflict, making defeat inevitable. Let us prepare for the coming storm, rather than attempt to ignore it.

The DNVP calls for the immediate unification of Germany and Bohemia. This country contains a vast German populations and was unjustly severed from the Reich in 1897 – let us correct this most terrible of the Versailles crimes!

The DNVP demands that Germany have an army capable of protecting her position as Europe’s foremost power. We call for an expansion of the army by at least 350,000 men.

Economic and Social Policy:

The state must withdraw from taking an overly interventionist role in the German economy. Funds for industrial expansion are to be withdrawn except in the more extreme circumstances in which they are necessary to combat unemployment. Likewise, industrial subsidies are to be withdrawn from failing industries so that more vibrant and profitable industries can take their place. Large tax exemptions for entrepreneurs shall allow for market forces to replace the role of the state under the Populist economic system as the primary investor and driving force behind the economy.

Whilst tariffs may be used in order to keep the budget balanced in times of hardship, the DNVP shall not support their use except at any other times.

The DNVP shall look to reign in the power of the trade unions by placing a ban on the most politically militant organisations.

The DNVP seeks neither to revoke nor further existing social reforms.

Constitutional Change:

The DNVP calls for a YES vote in the referendum on constitutional change.

Our great President, Paul von Hindenburg, seeks to do away with the despised Weimar constitution and the pitiful Republican regime. Let the Kaiserreich be restored and Germany emerge anew!

The DNVP calls for Kaiser Wilhelm II to be restored to his throne immediately and a new Empire proclaimed. The party also demands the restoration of all aristocratic titles and properties that were unjustly confiscated in 1898. The party calls for the Upper House to be restored and repopulated with notables and the best citizens of the Empire and endorsed with political power once more.

All Revolutionary Socialist organisations are to be proscribed under the constitution as a threat to the German state and society. Limited censorship must be employed in order to guard against the re-emergence of these Marxist ideals that have so stricken our country.

Non-German populations within the Weimar Constitution are ensured an obscene number of seats within the Reichstag! Let the number of seats set aside for the non-German population be reduced to an adequate level.

Should it prove impossible to restore the Kaiserreich, the DNVP would advocate a new constitution in which the office of President is empowered, but the rest of our programme remains unchanged.

The DNVP shall support any the President within the Reichstag in all his efforts to amend the broken Weimar constitution and restore good governance to Germany.

German Centre Party (Monarchist) (Deutsche Zentrumspartei (Monarchist))
- DZP M

Political Position: Centre-Right

Ideology: Conservative Christian Democracy / Political Catholicism / Monarchism

Party Leader: Franz von Papen

Papen was born into the Catholic nobility of Westphalia during the Kaiserreich. Although young and privileged enough to escape service in the Great War (he was not yet 18 at the end of the conflict) he fought during the Civil War against the revolutionaries, although later became disillusioned with the Ludendorff dictatorship and joined the Centre Party as an advocate of constitutional monarchism. Working his way up through the party during the Republican era, he truly came to national prominence only 1919 when he led the rebellion in the right wing of the DZP that allowed for Hindenburg to claim the Presidency and then later became the leader of the Monarchist DZP.

Description:

The Centre Party has contained a prominent pro-Habsburg right wing since 1887, and after the Revolution that wing emerged into a broader monarchist tendency that advocated a new Kaiserreich, although under a different Imperial House. With the possibility of a restoration now genuinely realisable, the monarchist Centrists were no longer willing to sit idly by and allow the leadership to set out a Republican position and formed their own party, claiming to be the true continuation of the Centre Party. With the support of figures as prominent as Karl von Habsburg and the claimant to the Bavarian throne Rupprecht von Wittelsbach the DZP M has gained a great deal of attention.

Foreign Policy:

Germany must pursue a foreign policy informed by Christian principles.

The godless beast of Communism must be opposed at all costs, not a single more European state shall be allowed to fall to atheistic revolutionaries.

A new European War would be a disaster for Christian civilisation; it must be avoided where possible. Let us seek a reproachment with France and especially Italy, let us not forget that the German nation owes its existence to our historic friendship with Italy. Peace is still retrievable.

To the East, Germany continues to prop up the ailing colossus of the Ottoman Empire against its own peoples. If the Empire cannot be convinced to reform, granting freedoms to its Christian, and indeed Muslim and Jewish, peoples then it should be allowed to collapse.

Germany must seek immediate unification with our brothers in Bohemia by any means necessary.

The DZP M calls for a continuation of rearmament to the tune of 100,000 men,

Economic and Social Policy:

The DZP M remains committed to the Centre’s Party’s historic policies of flat tax rates, an opposition to tariffs except when necessary in circumstances of budget deficits, economic interventionism to encourage industrial growth and the maintenance of the existing social security net although no further reforms should be sought.

Constitutional Change:

The DZP M strongly supports a YES vote in the referendum on constitutional change.

Although we must be wary that the Prussian Monarchists do not unduly influence our new President, this is a golden opportunity for Germany to shed itself of the groaning inadequacies of Republicanism. It is a chance to create a new Kaiserreich: stable, Christian and democratic.

The Centre Party (Monarchist) supports the restoration of monarchy in Germany, but not under the House of Prussian Militarism, the house of Asiatic Despotism, but under the House of Habsburg – the rightful Imperial household of Germany. In contrast to the decrepit and reactionary Wilhelm von Hohenzollern, Karl von Habsburg is youthful, devoutly Christian, proudly German and unquestioningly embraces democracy.

The new regime in Germany shall be neither an anarchic Republic nor authoritarian Prussian Autocracy but a constitutional monarchy headed by a new, righteously Christian, Kaiser.

The DZP (M) supports the restoration of the Upper House, assembled from notables representing all of Germany’s regions so that no region might dominate any other – as the Prussians so frequently attempted during the previous Kaiserreich. The Upper House will have the power to block legislation, but not to create any itself.

Governmental power shall remain firmly in the hands of the Reichstag.

The DZP (M) supports the restoration of all lost aristocratic titles, however so much time has passed since the Revolution that it is neither possible nor desirable for former lands and properties to be restored.

We shall ensure that Berlin’s position as the capital of Germany does not come into question.

In the Reichstag, the DZP (M) shall support any constitution that grants greater balance between Germany’s regions and creates a system of government more conducive to stability and order.

German Centre Party (Republican) (Deutsche Zentrumspartei (Republikaner))
- DZP R

Political Position: Centre-Left

Ideology: Moderate Christian Democracy / Republicanism / Political Catholicism

Party Leader: Wilhelm Marx

Chancellor from 1914-1919, Marx oversaw the Centre Party’s greatest electoral result of the Republican era after taking over the leadership from Konstantin Fehrenbach and led the party into close cooperation with the FVP. As the unity of the Republican movement broke down in 1918, Marx was humiliated in the 1919 Presidential elections as he failed to reach the second round of voting – seeing both many of his FVP allies vote for the Socialist candidate, and more painfully, Papen lead a significant number of his own parties’ Reichstag members in support of Hindenburg. In the aftermath of the defeat he reluctantly joined Stresemann’s new government – seeing his party tear itself apart over the course of the year as the tensions between the Monarchists and Republicans finally resulted in a split.

Description:

Just as like its Monarchist counterpart, the Republican Centre Party claims to be the true Centre Party and inheritor of the legacy of German Centrism. With a little over half of the old DZP’s membership joining the DZP R’s faction, along with the unified party’s leader, the Republicans perhaps have a better claim to being the direct successors than the Monarchists. None the less, the split was almost unbearably hard upon the party, which now attempts to regroup as the Republican representative of moderate Christian Democracy.

Foreign Policy:

Since the Great War Germany has acted as the guardian of European civilisation against godless Communist Revolution. In this it has succeeded – today, not a single European state has joined the ranks of Scandinavia, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Since the Great War Germany as looked to prevent the outbreak of another general European war. In this she has again succeeded, excepting the rare Alpine War, and conflicts resulting from revolutionaries grasping for power Europe has enjoyed its longest period of sustained peace for at least two centuries, perhaps longer.

Critics on the left and right may denounce the foreign policies of Germany in the Republican era, yet, guided by the steady hand of the Centre Party, our Republic has not only furthered the interests of Germany but of all Western civilisation! Yet, both the continent, and Germany, remain in danger. This is no time for an experiment!

We must be willing to be flexible in our negotiations with other major continental powers, but shall not surrender our influence in Central and Eastern Europe.

As the Ottoman Empire continues to struggle to reform, Germany must apply its considerable influence in the country to demand serious and striking changes for the sake of stability and justice.

Germany should seek the immediate unification of Germany and Bohemia – but only through legal means.

The DZP R calls for a military expansion of 80,000 men, the further enlargement of the German army shall be necessary if our nation is to continue to play its invaluable role internationally.

Economic and Social Policy:

The Republican Centre Party continues to support the institution of a flat tax rate that shall ensure that all social classes share the burden of taxation equally. The Party is also willing to accept the limited use of tariffs in order to keep the state budget in balance. The state should also aim to continue to provide assistance for the further investment in industry so that Germany’s re-exertion as an economic power might continue.

The Centre Party shall defend all existing social reforms; however it shall stand in opposition to their extension.

Constitutional Change:

The DZP R calls for a resounding NO vote in the referendum on constitutional change.

Although some constitutional change, notably greater powers of autonomy to the regions and greater protection against the possibility of one region exerting domination over another, may be desirable – Paul von Hindenburg cannot be trusted to deliver a new democratic constitution, only a more autocratic one.

The Centre Party is willing to negotiate should the President be victorious in his referendum; however we shall not compromise over the democratic and Republican nature of the constitution, the supremacy of the Reichstag nor basic freedoms of speech, religion and organisation. These central principles of Christian Democracy cannot and will not be forsaken by the German Centre Party (Republican).

German Workers’ Party (Deutsche Arbeiterpartei)
- DAP

Political Position: Extreme Right

Ideology: Fascism

Party Leader: Anton Drexler

Drexler came to occupy the leadership of the DAP in the aftermath of the 1914 election, as the party failed to make advanced on its 1909 performance and frustration at the leadership boiled over. The new leader took the party in a new direction as he pleased militants by placing extra emphasis on the party’s paramilitaries whilst at the same time offering political support to the broader Anti-Republican Right. Since 1919, when Drexler defeated Hitler and the party’s radicals in his advocacy of support for Hindenburg, the party has relentlessly supported an at least temporary unity of the Right in the name of bringing down the Republic once and for all.

Description

Since 1914 the party has grown both more militant, and more moderate. Just as its paramilitary wing, the paper hats or brown shirts, has grown rapidly in size and influence the parliamentary wing of the party, Hitler’s radicals aside, appears positively mouse like. Although barred from entered into Stresemann’s coalition, without the DAP’s parliamentary support the coalition would have fallen whilst throughout the past year the party has made clear its support for Hindenburg’s Presidency. It is unclear to many whether this moderation is a temporary measure, or a longer lasting trend. The party’s programme remains largely unchanged.

Foreign Policy:

Europe is in a sorry state, it is up to the German nation to save European civilisation from the monstrosity of Communism and to right the wrongs of the Great War.

We must make immediate preparations for imminent war, both internal and external. A coalition of Jewish controlled government from Copenhagen and Paris through Berlin, Moscow, Rome and beyond seek to leave our nation and our people held down. We must look to expand the army by several orders of magnitude as soon as possible in preparation for another great conflict.

As soon as our armed forces are prepared for the struggle we shall set against the Communist states to the North, the French to the West and the Italians to the South and the Russians to the East – simultaneously destroying the Communists states that have so readily embraced Germany’s enemies and restoring German rule to lands populated by ethnic Germans.

Bohemia must be immediately annexed, through forceful means if necessary. The Baltic States and Poland should be encouraged to make themselves open for the settlement of Germans. Our nation’s population is overflowing, with the loss of our colonial Empire the escape valve for excess population has been loss – mass unemployment and the popularity of the Marxists false offers of paradise inevitably follow. If, instead of Africa, Eastern Europe could be settled then these problems would subside. In light of this the DAP supports the acquisition of territories in the Russian Republic to be opened up for German settlement, just as we intend to encourage in the Baltics and Poland.

Only through radical measures can Germany, and Western civilisation itself, be saved from the twin menaces of Marxism and decadence. Germany Above All Else! Long Live the Fatherland!

Economic and Social Policy:

The German Workers’ Party advocates the immediate expulsion of the entire Jewish population of Germany and the confiscation of all Jewish owned property. Germany should encourage the states under our influence in Eastern and Central Europe to take similar measures. Without the insidious influence of peoples who cannot and do not show any loyalty to the German, or for that matter any other, nation yet continue to dominate our societies and economies our nation shall prosper!

Beyond this, we must totally reorganise German society. No longer shall competing social classes be set against one another, no longer shall individuals strive for their personal enrichment and personal power above the needs of the nation. Let all Germans work together for the nation, and let the nation work for all Germans!

Strikes and trade unions are pointless; the workers are always defeated having caused disruption for the rest of society. They shall be abolished entirely and the state shall act as an intermediary ensuring that workers are granted adequate pay and necessary social reforms are passed to improve their working conditions.

The DAP shall ensure the passing of at least two social reforms.

No German owned private property shall be threatened – indeed its security is guaranteed! However the state shall push forward with the construction of new, modern, industries as well as large scale infrastructure projects – ensuring that the German economy remains the strongest and most vibrant on earth.

Constitutional Change:

The German Workers’ Party resoundingly supports a vote of YES in the referendum on constitutional change.

This whore of a Republic must be abolished entirely, all memory of it expunged from our history. We are openly and totally opposed to any notion of ‘democracy’. The division of society into interest groups and political parties cause discord, weakness and decadence – the inevitable result of which is defeat in war the like of which the defeat Great War will pale in comparison to.

Let all political parties be abolished. All known militants of the Communist Party are to be interned with those amongst them guilty of criminal wrongdoing executed and those willing to reform released and restored to German society. Likewise leading Socialists must also be interned whilst other opponents of the National Revolution must also face imprisonment so that the unitary will of the nation shall not be challenged and undermined.

We oppose the restoration of the old, decrepit and corrupt elites of the aristocracy and the old monarchical households – it is these men who allowed for the decline of the German nation, and these men who failed to save Germany from the abyss of Revolution following defeat. They are to be condemned to the dustbin of history along with all the old parties, and divisions.

Instead a new nation shall arise, united around a single head, a leader a Führer. Above all internal conflict and whose will shall never err from that of the nation itself.

The German Workers’ Party shall work alongside other parties opposed to this Republican abomination in achieving its destruction.

German Democratic Party (Deutsche Demokratische Partei)
- DDP

Political Position: Economically - Hard Right, Politically - Left

Ideology: Liberalism

Party Leader: Hjalmar Schacht

Although heavily criticised by a powerful faction within his own party, Schacht had achieved much of what he has set out to do upon being appointed party leader – restoring the DDP to government for the first time since 1909 and bringing down the ‘statist’ government of the Left. He had even managed to align with the right without seeing Republican democracy fall, at least for the time being with the DDP working alongside the Republican wing of Centrism in forcing Hindenburg to pursue a referendum on constitutional change rather that attempt to alter the constitution without one.

Description:

The German Democratic Party was in a sorry state by 1920. Seeing its support gradually erode away in the Republican era as its increasingly pathological support for laissez faire economics saw it cut off all ties with the Republican Left, leading it into an unnatural alliance with the Right in the pursuit of power. However, its new allies maintained a very different political vision to the unwaveringly pro-Weimar DDP making an eventual break with the Right highly likely. Caught between a political vision shared with the Left and an economic one more acceptable to the mainstream Right, the DDP has been left wildered and isolated.

Foreign Policy:

Germany can never, even for a second, consider friendly relations with a Communist power or allow for any state to fall into the arms of social revolutionaries. She shall use any means necessary to protect Europe from revolution.

We should support efforts at modernisation and democratisation in all of the nations within our sphere of influence – with the Ottoman Empire direly needing our encouragement to continue along this path on which they have stalled badly since the Young Turk Revolution.

The DDP wishes to prevent the outbreak of another general European war, which appears ever more likely by the day. We shall aim to reopen diplomatic channels with France, Italy and Russia in an effort to ease rising tensions.

It is clear further military expansion is necessary, the DDP supports the recruitment of a further 80,000 men.

Economic and Social Policy:

In the years since 1905 the economically illiterate Populist led government, constantly in consultation with their Marxist allies, has done its best to destroy all independent entrepreneurial activity and prepare the German economy for catastrophic collapse through the creation of immense industrial bubbles with their psychotic interventionist policies. Over the past decade we have witnessed recurring fiscal-industrial crises brought about by the over inflation of the industrial sector by the state. The thoughtless Socialist-Populist solution to the problems caused by state intervention has been merely further state intervention! Madness! Only a return to laissez-faire, which may be a painful experience in the short term, can save Germany from long term disaster and oblivion. If we continue on the present course, in another decade there will be no German economy to save.

In order to achieve this we must maintain a total opposition to any and all tariffs, tax cuts for investors, guarantees of all private property and the offering of the promise of a dramatic rollback of constricting social reforms that have continued to advance in recent years.

The DDP shall seek the repeal of at least four social reforms.

Constitutional Change:

The DDP calls for a NO vote in the coming referendum on constitutional change.

The DDP remains committed, as ever, to Republican Democracy – far more so than any other party! Indeed, the source of much Anti-Republican sentiment has been the mismanagement of government by the Marxist-Populists over the past two decades. None the less, whilst there may be room for further democratisation of the Weimar Constitution, this shall invariably not be the aim of our President. For all his positive traits he remains attached to an era that has passed and Germans should have no desire to return to. The German Democratic Party looks forwards to a democratic future, not back to a monarchical past!

The DDP shall oppose any attempts to alter the Weimar Constitution in the Reichstag. Hurrah for Democracy! Hurrah for the Republic! Hurrah for Germany!

Nice to see the DDP is prepare to dispense with its principles as it sees fit. Shame it couldn't do that with its economic dogma as well...

You're pretty dogmatic yourselves :p Like everytime I say DDP and FVP can cooperate you continue bashing :) And a free-market is important for us as just every other freedom like property right, liberty to the individual, freedo of speech etc etc. I believe for most of your freedoms you're dogmatic too. And you're quite dogmatic when it comes to your interventionism tol.

So we have a referendum and a clear split between a broad Republican Left and an even broader Republican Right with the DDP somewhere in between favouring aspects of both camps but hating them both either secretly or very publicly.

Remember to bold votes, especially the referendum ones.

YES, von Hindenburg should be allowed to propose a new constitution. The way Tommy has worded it, any constitution von Hindenburg proposes will still have to pass the Reichstag in order to be implemented anyhow.

As for my vote within the Reichstag... three hurrahs for a party that meets my desires! I vote for Franz von Papen and the Deutsche Zentrumspartei (Monarchist)!

So: Yes, and DZP (M)!

You have the referendum figured out exactly. If victorious in the referendum Hindenburg proposes a constitution, but it must pass through the Reichstag.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. There is only one issue of any import at this election, and that issue is the republican dictatorship. There are only two parties competing in this election: the monarchist party and the republican party. A vote for any other reason is a wasted vote; now is not the time to be blinded by petty economic dogma, differences of religion or of foreign policy. There can be no doubt that Hindenburg is a tyrant in the making, and no matter how evil any hypothetical Kaiser may be, a constitutional monarch is certainly a lesser evil compared to an all-powerful autocratic President.

Therefore, I advise all Germans of liberal and patriotic disposition to Vote Zentrum This Time as the most democratic, and therefore best of all available options, and to vote Yes in the upcoming referendum, but only if it looks as if Zentrum will command an overwhelming majority in the Bundestag. A Tyrant Hindenburg may be, but he is also a citizen of the German state, and to deny any German citizen the right to suggest changes to the constitution is undemocratic. Investing the President with such power however is a great risk, and so, should only be done on the understanding that the office will be abolished once a more humane, democratic and tolerant constitutional monarch can be restored.

This is not the time to be distracted by other matters: the very essence of German democracy is standing at this election, and only an enthusiastic vote for The Papenite Zentrumpartei (Karlist) can see it returned!

Traitor! You would chose a papist dog over protestant independence?! A Habsburg over a Hohenzollern?! I though low of you before, but this time, It is reaching rock bottom. The Habsburg would see us only become another delusional nation under the so called chosen man of God. I hope for your sake, that the German people choose wisely, I would even vote for the DDP now! I will not throw this country to the will of a madman! Let us hope all goes as planned, else the DAP may have found itself a new member..

((I thought all the Habsburg was dead? Didn't they leave for someplace other? ))

I must admit that I didn't even consider the prospect of a Hapsburg claimant prior to this update. Props once again to Tommy for continuing to pull one over his readership. :)

Good Germans, fellow citizens of our nation, we are called upon to vote once more.
It is a most important election.

We cannot delude ourselves by believing that the weakened republican parties are at all capable of stopping the rising tide of the Rightist threat.
Therefore, good Christians of all colours must unite in support of the old Centre, supporting democracy and its safe-guard: his Imperial Highness Karl von Habsburg!
A good Christian, a fellow Catholic, God's chosen son of His chosen people, our people.

No more tyrants! Down with this presidential monster! Let his own tricks be turned to the good of our democracy!

Deus lo vult! For die Deutsche Zentrumspartei (Karlist/Monarchist)! Yes, for his most Catholic Majesty!

dzp-m!

((There are Habsburgs alive even to this day. The last Kaiser, Franz Joseph, however, is dead indeed. This is his son, who historically gave up power, but never abdicated, and was exiled from what once was Austria-Hungary as a result))
Don't forget the yes/no on the referendum!

It might be wise for one to hold his judgement on that question for the time being... ;)

IIRC the last Habsburg Emperor, Franz Joseph, is actually the Great Uncle (brother of grandfather) of Karl - although Karl is his direct heir.

Remember you may still cast a vote in the referendum as well. If you do so please make another post so I don't miss it. :)
