Shouldn't there be a way for players to start with a black template rather than amending a starting template. If there is a way how do you do it?

Open any template. Template name window is a drop-down menu. The very top entry of it is "Create Empty" - just what you are looking for.

Don't worry that you couldn't find it - it took me at least 200 hours before I worked out how to do it. It's just one of things about the game that are not particularly intuitive.

Be warned, it frequently costs more experience to build a template from scratch than to copy an existing template for free and then edit it to what you want. It all depends on whether or not you have an existing template that has at least some of the same components you intend for the new template.

Yep. Even if it's just got a few support companies you want it can be a real saving.

Also never research your first tank tech before researching motorized, as a country like Spain which has neither; if you research WW1 tank without having motorized, the default free armor division template will have tanks+leg infantry rather than tanks+mot. Researching mot first will save you quite some XP to begin with.
