I could have posted this as a reply to another thread but I want to include a sincere compliment and feared that a mere reply wouldn't do it right.

Firstly the compliment then. I noticed the black hole redesign subject and this reminded me of earlier similar interactions between PDS and the community ( although i dont remember an example right now). In short I find it amazing and wonderful how the deep interaction Paradox has with its community leads to meaningful alterations to the game design. Especially the way in which PDS acknowledges " hmm yes that is a good idea, why didn't we have that" shows their respect for us. When working on a complex project like this game I imagine you overlook details that the community WILL pick up.

Now to the point. The new design of black holes is beautiful and far more impressive than the original design, even though its pure speculation what they actually should look like. What we do know about black holes is that they are generally actually quite small (as in space they occupy). For a star to collapse into a black hole it needs a star 20 times more massive than our Sun. Thats pretty heavy, but what remains after the collapse is an extreme dense point. What we see in the game is black holes the size of normal stars. While some might have consumed enough matter to grow to such a size most would probably be a lot smaller. So therefore I suggest that black holes be depicted significantly smaller on the system view. On the overview map I understand they need to be big out of practicality. And there is artistic freedom, but that is not an argument to ignore all aspects of an object.

Disclaimer, im not a scientist ( well not an astrophysicist anyway) so I could be wrong, if so inform me by all means.

Paradox continue to be the most brilliant game studio out there.

the sizes in stellaris aren't really anywhere near realistic in general though. the distances form suns, neutron stars, as you said black holes.

it's not really worth it. as it is, it already communicates exactly what it is visually. if we start fixing sizes there's simply a ton more to be fixed.

All the sizes aren't realistic in the game. It has something to do with "being able to see stuff". If you take the stars in the game as a reference and you would build everything according to it, you would probably have problems finding and clicking on planets, never mind stations or ships and if you then would put everything in realistic distances...oh boy...

It would be pretty unusual to have planets around a "small" black hole anyway. As far as I understood it the black hole forms due to a star going nova which would eradicate every planet orbiting it.
Even if a black hole could catch a rogue planet, ingame its more or less just a solar system with the star replaced by a black hole.

And the massive black hole in the center of the galaxy isnt an object anyway.

The ambient energy, number of massive stars whizzing about on short, tight orbits, and gigantic energy output of the blackhole's accretionary disk makes the center of any spiral galaxy quite deadly.

Its a beautifull game indeed but it never keeps my attention for long, sad, but it feels dead/empty for a reason.
Anywho as to the scale of things...bring on the mod machine.

If anyone is really keen to go and look at well-scaled black holes on a realistic galaxy map with fairly realistic gravitational lensing and attraction (but not time dilation), I have this advice for you:

Play Elite: Dangerous.

It's a great game.
I have a friend that plays that. He calls it "Elite: Space Parking Ticket Simulator". He's racked up enough fines for damage incurred while docking to be a considered a major criminal. I think that one station shoots him when he requests to dock.
