Black Eagle Rising: A Russia Kaiserreich AAR

Russia in 1936 was a dying nation. The hopes of those like Maxim Gorkiy, that the period of hyperinflation, brutal street violence, crushing poverty, and collective nihilism and despair following Russia's defeat in the Great War could lead to opportunity for real social change, were unfulfilled. The humiliating Treaty of Lwow, signed in 1917, forced Russia to give up the entirety of its Eastern European holdings, as well as admit full responsibility for the war, and to pay huge sums of money to Germany as reparations, far more than was just. The Russian people would be furious if they weren't so disheartened and apathetic. The nation was in dark times indeed.

The Kerensky administration, which at this point had ruled Russia for almost 20 years, was indecisive, ineffective and out of touch with the average Russian. They were growing more and more unpopular by the day. The nation was descending into anarchy, with far-left gangs killing ultra-nationalists and vice versa in the streets of Moscow and Petrograd.

At 3 in the morning on January 4, 1936, the unthinkable happened. As he was traveling to the home of his mistress, Alexander Kerensky was shot and killed by a lone gunman of unknown political orientation.

The country was plunged into utter chaos. Only one man could restore the Russian Empire to its former glory, to save his nation from the edge of the final precipice.

That man was Pyotr Wrangel.

COUP D'ETAT IN RUSSIA: ULTRA-NATIONALIST SEIZES POWER

ralph-crane.jpg

The news shell-shocked the rest of the world. Every major nation's cabinet scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss the event. France, Britain, and the rest of the Internationale saw the inevitable instability following Wrangel's seize of power as an opportunity to agitate Russian peasants and ferment Syndicalist revolt.

Oswald Mosley of Britain had a different view of the situation. A Nationalist like Wrangel would seek to take back land lost in the Weltkrieg to the Reich. Perhaps this new Russia could make a useful ally against the Germans, a far more insidious threat to the Global Proletariat?

Germany was especially concerned; will Wrangel attempt to take back the former Empire's holdings in Mitteleuropa? German troops in Ukraine, Ruthenia, and the Baltic were put on high alert in case of a surprise Russian offensive.

Meanwhile, in Russia, Peter Wrangel took an Oath of Fealty to the Russian nation.

In front of both domestic and foreign journalists, as well as his own country's leading figureheads, he outlined his vision for a New Order in Russia and abroad. A new chapter in Russian history had begun; The age of Czars and Cossacks was over. An intelligent, decisive Authoritarianism, combined with economic Corporatism and a strong Russian Nationalism and Traditionalism will bring the nation into the modern era and back to its former glory. One nation, one empire, one Vozhd! A glorious palingenic revival was at hand!

Wrangel received a standing ovation. The next day, in the streets of Moscow and Petrograd, Russians went out in droves, waving Wrangel's new yellow-black-and-white flag in solidarity with their new leader.

And in the hushed state offices of Berlin and Tokyo, government officials sighed in relief. There had been no mention of reclaiming former Russian lands in Wrangel's speech. Conflict had been avoided... for now.

Wrangel's first decision as Vozhd was to order the development of scientific research, as well as the building of factories in the suburbs of Moscow. Without modern technology and industry, the country was doomed.

Wrangel then met with envoys from around the world, eager to understand this new leader's intentions. German, Japanese, French, British, and American ambassadors were kindly received, and assured of Russia's non-aggression and neutrality in world affairs.

On the global scale, the situation for Russia was grim. Its holdings in Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and the Baltic, as well as Central Asia and the port of Vladivostok, along with the surrounding countryside had been turned into faux states by the German Reich in an attempt to curb Russia's power and increase its own.

Russia was weak, and before it could even attempt to assert itself in world affairs, not to mention fight wars of conquest, it must build itself up internally. The military was decades old, the infrastructure was decaying, and its navy was obsolete. Wrangel had many sleepless nights ahead of him indeed.
