Inviting Yugoslavia to the Axis might be quite risky... It didn't work out that well IRL :p

I think you right about Yugoslavia and Romania. ATM I need every help I can get and soon I will be able to get Yugoslavia in the Axis without even influencing them (although I think that such prospect should be considered, too).

African invasion will be performed only in case of an emergency and mostly with forces stationed in France. Currently I will simply concentrate on sinking Allied convoys.

Finland is close to the Allied side, although I think that in HPP they might attack SU on their own, i.e. without being part of the Axis. Besides, ATM them joining the Allies would not be a bad thing at all ;).

There are, of course, also some old plans for invasion of Norway and Sweden, but frankly I think that it will not be worth it, as I will have to defeat the armies of both those countries first. Also, if Finland joins the Allies then they will be hostile to me, too.

I think that the Chinese could be a powerful ally, but they would need to push the Japanese up to Manchuria first. They could even attack Indochina and India... I don't want to invite Japan, because 1) they are bogged down in China 2) there is always a risk of JAP-USA war breaking out 3) they could get overrun by the Soviets quickly.

@Slan:

Ah, yes, there is that event... Crap, I don't want to divert forces to the Balkans...

I would concentrate everything I could spare to confront the Soviets.

I doubt that the UK will be able to pose a serious threat. They will probably concentrate on Africa, so I would leave Italy to deal with that. I wouldn't send German forces to Africa.

I don't think you have any reason to fear Spain - do you? I can see no useful purpose in starting any Scandinavian or Balkan operations in the present circumstances. I am surprised to hear that Romania might be sympathetic to the Soviets - even so I would bide my time there and counter-influence. You have Hungary and Bulgaria, which should be enough to keep the Romanians quiet if the worst happens.

If China and Japan are fighting each other then neither is likely to make a decisive impact against the Soviets I think, although they would certainly provide a distraction that would surely draw some Soviet forces away from Europe. Inviting one or other might be worth a try? Or maybe wait and see how your campaign goes first?

After that titanic struggle against the Allies I can't imagine how many forces the Soviets must have. Can't wait to find out! :)

I do not fear the British. My navy is dominant and forces stationed in France are more than enough to repel British invasion. The French are totally broken, although they still support the British in Africa. The only thing I'm afraid of is Allied airforce. Unless the USA joins the Allies (unlikely ATM), the Western Front is secured.

However, fighting in North Africa is going at a very slow pace - that's why I'm thinking about invasion of French West Africa. I would only use troops that are currently stationed in France, so it would by no means hamper the Eastern Front. However, I will only perform such invasion when I feel that I can safely supply my troops (I have to have enough convoys and convoy escorts) and that I can keep the remnants of the Royal Navy at bay.

I have friendly relations with Spain and it's firmly in my sphere of influence. However, part of my pre-Soviet plan was to capture Gibraltar. I will have to postpone that...

Romania had a left-winged coup some years ago. I've been supporting my party for quite a long time, but so far to no avail. I'm pretty sure that if the Axis invades it, then it will join the Comintern. Also, even if it joins the Allies, the SU will attack it, since they are at war with Allies, too. Therefore, I will invade it only when I am certain of the results.

I think that we can safely assume that the Soviets have much bigger army than the Allies had in France. Instead of being outnumbered 2-1 I can expect to be outnumbered at least 3-1. I bet that they have immense MP reserves and high IC, too. I will not win this war by attrition - of that I'm sure. However, I have not yet unleashed my full potential - I'm still on the basic draft law and have ~900 MP. When I get to sth like 800 I will change to the higher law. Moreover, when more garrison divs are built, I will change the occupation law in France to harsher one, which will get me more IC. Also, I will change to "Total Economic Mobilisation" when it becomes available (in HPP you cannot trigger it so easily as in Vanilla) and if I need it (it increases war exhaustion accumulation and in HPP it hurts!).

I'm contemplating buying HOI3 and decided to view an AAR or two to get a feel for the game. Just read through this AAR - a really enjoyable read.

One question though - how come the ship's sunk ledger shows that the HMS Dunedin (CL) was sunk by the HMS Rodney (BB)? Is that a bug or a case of friendly fire?

In fact another question: Can someone confirm that HOI3 runs okay in Windows 7?

Keep the updates coming :)

Hi Garuda!

Thanks for the kind comment. Yes, friendly fire happens. However, it should be noted that the "sunk ships" list apparently does not show ships sunk by aircraft. I've destroyed many enemy vessels in ports by aircraft bombing and they are not visible in the stats screen.

I cannot answer your question concerning HOI3's performance on Windows 7, unfortunately.

I will post at least one more update during this week, but I have to play a little bit first :).

Be sure to get Semper Fi expansion. HOI3 became playable after its release and with HPP mod it's actually quite good.

Taking On the Bear

The Diplomatic Front

HoI3_315.jpg

HoI3_321.jpg

Finland formed an alliance with Poland and revoked its non-aggression pact with Soviet Union. The situation is clearly heating up. It is beneficial for us, because the Soviets will be forced to guard the Soviet-Finish border. Finland may yet serve as a diversion...

HoI3_319.jpg

Persia became endangered and asked for our help. We supported their cause and Persia joined the Axis. This opens up a front with India and forces the Italians to fight a two-front war, but considering the fact that India is also hostile to the Soviet Union, it may serve as another diversion.

----

Defence of Poland

HoI3_334.jpg

Soviet progress is slower than expected, which means that their army is not of the greatest quality. We are holding the line in Eastern Prussia (although we have some supply problems there), but Polish army is about to be encircled. Therefore, our light tanks will protect Polish the flank.

More and more troops are arriving from the West. Judging by the enemy's combat performance we expect that the Soviets will not be able to get past our defence line on the Vistula River.

HoI3_337.jpg

The Soviets reached our defence line on 15th of June 1942, but they did not dare to advance further. It has been decided that the Wehrmacht needs to take the initiative in its own hands and plans for first major encirclement were made. Soviets were vulnerable on their flanks, which meant that it could be possible to cut off part of their army near Vistula river.

HoI3_342.jpg

A combined armoured and motorised force completed the task in less than two weeks. The pocket still needs to be cleared of enemy soldiers, but it was concluded that our first major operation in the war against the Soviets was a success.

HoI3_343.jpg

Another armoured thrust was made with the intention of encircling Soviet forces near Lwów. Major enemy forces were present in the region, so stiff resistance was to be expected.

HoI3_345.jpg

However, by 17th of July 1942 Lwów region was effectively cut off from Ukrainian regions. Our bombers started logistical bombings in the region in order to deprive the Soviet forces stationed there of supplies.

HoI3_346.jpg

The remnants of the Soviet forces from the first encirclement fled to Lublin. The siege of the city would be long and bloody. Still, their surrender was just a question of time.

HoI3_348.jpg

We need more soldiers, so new draft laws were enacted. Our manpower reserve is significantly smaller than the Soviet one, so we will not win this war by attrition warfare. Therefore, we will concentrate on decisive strikes and encirclements.

HoI3_349.jpg

The Lvivian pocket has finally been cleared of enemy forces on 10th of August. Unfortunately, the Soviet defenders of Lublin are still holding the city in their hands...

----------------

Plans for further operations

HoI3_350.jpg

As it is still summer, new operations are already being planned for this year. Firstly, we intend to encircle the Soviet forces in northern-eastern Poland and Lithuania (RED). Secondly, we will attempt to encircle the bulk of the enemy forces near the Pripet marshes (GREEN). Thirdly, should the circumstances allow us, we will attempt to attack Moscow directly (YELLOW. If it proves to be impossible, we will attempt to form an another encirclement in Lithuania(PINK).

Great work! I always like to see big encirclements like that. 150 Soviet brigadess trapped in Lublin plus however many lost near Lwow has got to hurt the red menace. Based on my test games the Soviets typically have about 900 or so brigades total by around this time. With their poor performance so far, it doesn't seem like they will be able to keep you from marching through Moscow after your next planned encirclements.

Hmmm... if u look on previous posts its the "normal" value of 7-800.

Anyways, very interesting turn of the diplomatic events. Almost sad to see you rip the Soviet frontline appart so easy as it will doom this game (as you will win shortly).

Soviet had ~8000 MP in April 1942, but their army wasn't mobilised and they needed ~1800 MP for reinforcements. However, they were only on THE BASIC DRAFT LAWS.

I wouldn't count on easy victory - I doubt that I will conquer Moscow in 1942. During the winter of 1942-1943 I will buildup my land and especially air forces and prepare for strong thrusts in spring 1943 I will also try to harass the British from time to time.

OMG... havn't seen anything close to that on Soviet before... (didnt realized the shift of countries there)

Wont matter when Germany is creating pockets like that. USSR wont be able to produce troops fast enough to cover the losses.
