There should be almost 200 years to make sure kiev cannot be taken from the east.. partially by spreading there and fortifying..
I like in Medieval TW how the mongol invasions sometimes work. They arrive with about 65.000 men (in MTW terms, this is a looot), but every player I know manages to hold them back....with Arbalesters and Halberdiers....

Actually, the Rus faired pretty well in some of the first major battles with the Mongols. They were routed, but the Mongol army was severely damaged. To bad all the Princes begun infighting again after that, and the Mongols had time to pick them off one by one
