Figured I would start a thread about this since there doesn't seem to be one.

Yesterday during DDRJake's stream of Common Sense it was shown that the 1st Idea Group has been moved from tech 4 Admin to tech 5 Admin

I'm not sure how big of a deal this really is, Jake off handedly mentioned it being about slowing down early colonization but he didn't sound 100% sure on that. Either way figure we should discuss this rather big change to the early game

Here I was praising Paradox for talking more about major design changes with the forum, and then again a huge change no one asked for with 0 official communication.

If this is correct.

Edit: So apparently there is going to be information about this after all, so I suppose this comment is mute.

edit2: What is everyone disagreeing with? That I think it's disappointing that there was no official communication on this (which there wasn't when this was created), or is everyone saying: I have zero problem with idea groups being moved to tech 5. Just curious.

If it is only about the exploration group, I figure it might actually help early Portuguese colonization and thus make them more likely to colonize Brazil. I've seen the Portuguese AI getting stuck trying to finish colonies in West Africa with massive tropical and hostile natives penalties quite often. If they pick exploration at a time where they can reach Brazil, maybe they won't bother colonizing West Africa and go straight for Brazil. In that case, this would be a very good change - ideally, this would mean that Portugal usually has ToT for Brazil by the time Castile gets to the New World, causing Castile to usually colonize the Caribbean or the Spanish Main.

Why would you want to help Portuguese to colonize? They pretty much are always dominant in the new world with spain going for mexico, carribean. Other major colonizers like french and england are always late to the party, because they are 24/7 busy waging war. Too often I see Breton, Norway even Muslim colonizers before England sets foot in NA.

Then again everyone is slowed down so it shouldn't change much and hopefully rotw will get some good news about reduced tech cost tomorrow. You just get more time to goof around before Europe comes with guns and pointy sticks to ruin your lovely heathen day.

I think the ROTW is pretty well balanced, though I think westernizing should give more benefits and be a little harder. But, it's pretty well balanced and should not be easy to fight off the whiteys once they come knocking.

Well, your mileage may vary in this. If Portugal gets to Brazil by the 1490s, they are usually fine. However, quite often they waste tons of time and money colonizing West african provinces with huge native populations and tiny growth rate. In these games, Portugal usually does not end up amounting to much. Be that as it may, we don't even know for sure if this change is really about colonization.

Europe wont feel it half as much as Indian or Chinease. But lets not jump to conclusion, tommorow we'll find out more.

It costs you 300-500 extra Admin points (depending on neighbor bonuses) for having to take an additional admin tech before westernizing, its not that big of a deal.

I think the ROTW is pretty well balanced, though I think westernizing should give more benefits and be a little harder. But, it's pretty well balanced and should not be easy to fight off the whiteys once they come knocking.
I'm hoping that the change is that Chinese tech group starts at tech 4 now because it makes little sense for them to have worse tech

and far less sense for them to start behind europeans in 1444

When playing Muslim to Horde tech it is entirely feasible to stay up to date using adm focus so this change would only slow down the unlocking of exploration for new world nations. The Aztec, Maya and Inca nations get a colonist from reforming so this really only hurts north american natives and if you have played a north american native once you probably wont do it again.

When playing Muslim to Horde tech it is entirely feasible to stay up to date using adm focus so this change would only slow down the unlocking of exploration for new world nations. The Aztec, Maya and Inca nations get a colonist from reforming so this really only hurts north american natives and if you have played a north american native once you probably wont do it again.

Also delays all very early strats that rely on having Diplo/Influence/Adm starting ideas by 10-15 years.

A bit of an annoyance with that will be MIL points imho. Right now you can basically time your ideagroups so that you get a mil idea group right around the time when your points are reaching cap and tech ahead penalty is huge (not true for all ROTW obviously).

It costs you 300-500 extra Admin points (depending on neighbor bonuses) for having to take an additional admin tech before westernizing, its not that big of a deal.
For Western tech - rotw will feel this change anally.
