I'm a new player and have been figuring many, many things out on my own (yes, I have passed the newbie stage of forgetting to actually click on the correct Casus Belli at the onset of a war), but one new problem I've encountered seems to require expert forum help: why is it that - after clearly winning a war - I sue for peace, the enemy accepts my terms, and then I take a massive Prestige hit?

I think I can at least partially answer my own question: it seems like if you declare war with a Casus Belli and then fail to meet the stated goals of that particular Casus, you're judged to have "failed" even if you won the war! True? If that IS true, then my question is does one need to meet all of the requirements or only some?

While I'm on the subject, is there a handy list somewhere of the Casus Belli and their goals? If said list is in-game, so much the better: I find that I remember the Casus Belli but not the goals and then find I have no way to look them up!

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I couldn't find anything.
If it matters, I'm running Divine Wind 5.0

Thanks for any help!

EDIT: Thanks, moderators (safferli, it seems), for moving this post. My first post, and I put it in the "Tech Support" forum by mistake!! I guess it can only go uphill from here...

Did you fight a war of re-union (for a PU), and did not actually chose the "union of crowns" peace? If so, you lose a ton of Prestige.

If you're comfortable deciphering game code, then the file common\cb_types.txt in your game directory has everything you need. Otherwise there's the EUIII Wiki, but that's not necessarily as up-to-date. In-game, there's no list of all cbs, but you can go to the declare war screen with a country, see what CBs are available, then just click 'Cancel' instead of 'OK'. (But don't get it wrong.:))

I once faught a PU war and chose to vassalise instead of force union.

My Prestige took a nosedive.

Hmm, I think you are correct! I'll keep an eye on future wars and see. So maybe this only happens in the case of the Reunion Casus Belli? I'd hate for my "Excommunicated Leader" war to take its goals seriously (of which Full Annexation is only the top of a very long list!).

If you're comfortable deciphering game code, then the file common\cb_types.txt in your game directory has everything you need. Otherwise there's the EUIII Wiki, but that's not necessarily as up-to-date. Great! I'll give that a shot. I'm comfortable doing it but hadn't given that a whirl yet...didn't know how useful it would be.
As for in-game, that's kind of the problem: I can easily see what the goals are when declaring war, but then after doing so there seems to be no way to remind oneself (especially important if, like in my example, one takes a massive prestige hit for failing to fulfill said goals!).

Yes, if you fight using the CB for claiming the throne, and you don't force a PU on the target country, you will lose a lot of Prestige. Even if you vassalize or annex them.

That's the only CB with "goals" (Though I think all three of the PU CBs do this; that's Obscure Documents, Restoration of Union, and Claim on Throne). You shouldn't have a problem otherwise. However, if you lose a lot of battles your prestige will fall quickly, which might be your problem.

Thanks, but no, it was definitely a case of winning the war handily, demanding tribute but not selecting a PU, and then immediately taking a huge Prestige hit. Very good to know that that's the only CB that does that and even better to know the three types of PU CBs. Thanks!

There's another way to kill your prestige with a victorious war:

Force your enemy to release an independent nation that owns one of your cores that you've never owned. Because you haven't been at war with that country, you lose your core at the end of the month.
