Pretty, pretty please, could someone help me make a custom avatar?

I have a design in mind: I have two graphics that I want to put together, change the colours in one, and make into the regulation 40x43 shield.

I downloaded GIMP, but to be honest I can't understand it to save my life. I'v looked at the tutorials here, but of course they don't tell you how to combine images, or how to alter the colours of images. They just work if you have a single

So, could someone either tell me (using small words) how to do this, or would someone even volunteer to take my two source images and make it for me?
