Today a war of giant scale broke out. Starting with a minor trade conflict between Ulm and Ravensburg a massive battle Great Britain, Poland-Lithuania, France and Castille started.
Does that sound like a likely scenario to you?
To avoid such giant fights caused by minor wars I would propose the following system:
Every war in the game should be assigned an importance value, which is influenced by the CB (diplomatic insult and trade conflict could have a low, conquer province a medium and coalition war, personal union war a high importance factor). The size of the two sides (counting only those countries that have to join, but not normal allies) should also be added as well as maybe some other factors (e.g. number of claims/cores on enemy).
Depending on the resulting importance values, allies should be more or less likely to join this war. If a war has a very low importance, no (or only small) allies should join on either side, if it has a very high importance almost all allies should join on both sides.
That would also make diplomacy more interesting, since you can't just rely on one big ally to protect you in all battles, but also now need some smaller allies to help you in the unimportant wars.
