perhaps bicycles could add speed but take away soft and hard attack. It is hard to picture bike drawn field artillery, or bike mortars.

It would seem a reasonable trade-off.

LOL - I like it, but why do the bicycles add soft attack? Organization? It just seems silly ;)

Anyway, I'd rather it not replaced armored cars, as well.

Would be more likely that thay give boosts to hard attack...The germans used Hitler-Jugend (I think, not 100% on that, could be just ordinary troops to) during the later part of the war equipped them with a bicycle-mounted panzerfaust and told them to watch for allied tanks, if they saw any they would head straight for them and fire the panzerfaust and "die gloriously"...

My guess is that Hitler was picked on as a kid and wanted revenge on the youth...Yes, I blame bullies for WW2...

Into the eighties, reorg. 1985 was what finally sent them out of the army I think.

Hey, we used bicycles when I did my service...well...when locking/unlocking the doors around the compound at night/morning...guard-detail was kinda fun when the second last week of our service the group on guard-detail before mine had played around dukes of hazzard-style jumping around and stuff and trashed 2 bikes...leaving 2...which where always taken by the people that didn't really need them...and of course it was the two bikes that had the seat set on "crush nuts"...

I was in the army during 2003jan19-2003nov12, I am confident that they still use bicycles...just, not for the combat-stuff...

Those where the days...

Oh yes, but now we are takling about batalions of bikers, not just guard duty. We had such stuff before you know. Sweden had a specialty of tractor-towed bicycles en masse. :)

Ugh, why did the orginal poster have to say "bicycle troops." He's got everyone picturing clowns riding unicycles.

Realistically it would make a lot of sense to have a motorcycle batallion which would simply increase movement speed. So it's not completely mechanised infantry but still a nice help in speed. Also troops could be dispatched more quickly to weak points in the line. Resupply would also be easier so they should get an organisation bonus as well.

Motorbike troops = semi motorised cavalry

Bicycle infantry = real until recently.

So, no need for such impoliteness.

Besides which a motorcycle can't do some of the things a bicycle can do, I'm fairly certain that military motorcycles are not good for the offroad and tight spaces that bicycles were used for in Malaysia.

well, the Germans used Motorcycles succesfully in the Yugoslavia campaign by rattling down the railway tracks! Its how Hauptsturmfuehrer Fritz Klingenberg captured Belgrade single-handedly. However the Kradschutzen (motorcycle Recon) were usually apart of the Aufklarungs Abteilung (Armoured Recce) also known as the Armoured Car Brigade in HoI2. :D

But no, they would not be adequate in jungle terrain unlike bicycles.

Switzerland used full brigades of Bikes until 1995, when they scalled down the whole. But it's definitely depending on the place you're going to fight, if they make sense or not... for HoI2? I don't know..

In my own mod I have reorganized some brigades bicycle troops are the first light armor brigade followed by the AC's and then true light armor.

I also have terrain specific troops types as armored car models representing ski troops as well as desert, hill/mountain, and jungle/swamp trained brigades. The tech that allows the brigade type gives it the terrain specific bonuses. So far it seems to work well.
The only problem is that, as stated earlier, those bonuses apply to all AC types. So you do get the rather odd condition that Finnish Ski troops perform very well in the deserts and jungles. :D
But since most of the countries that get them don't venture far it doesn't happen often.

Actually I saw a recent article that troops trained to be in the artic were rather good at retaining fighting power in warm deserts too. Not that it compensate for the ski troops being _that_ good in your mod, but the outcome is at least a bit realistic .

Well they aren't so good as to unbalance the game anyway. I gave them a small boost to their basic stats and a 25% boost to attack, defend, and move in their terrain. Besides these troops are not available to the major powers, only to those nations with a natural nationwide affinity for them. Therefore the main effect is to help represent the abilities of the smaller nations to fight on their home terrain.

now now, don't mock.

There is talk of a psychadelic 6th Reich mod with a jivving Hitler and Himmler Man of Mystery both fighting the evil Underwater Don Cossacks and their Sea-Horse cavalry.

I mock you not. :D
