...the surprise and perceived inability to fight back -- that resulted in people taking out their anger on captured sniperss. Notably, both of those factors are absent in Clan fights, because you know you're about to be attacked and who and where they are.
I would disagree on the inability to fight back being absent in IS vs Clan fights.

True, but Clan ideology was developed in a Clan vs Clan vacuum, so by the time they got back to the Inner Sphere, their attitude was likely that it was the Spheroids' fault for destroying their technology to the point they couldn't fight back. (The Clans are, like many factions in BT, a hypocritical people, after all.)

I'm starting to feel like it's less that I don't understand people's ideas about Clan duels and more that I just disagree, which is fine. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

True, but Clan ideology was developed in a Clan vs Clan vacuum,
Or: in an interpolation to merge the Virtual Worlds game pods vacuum with the existing game. :D

Could someone explain to me why long range doesn't fit with the Clans' dueling ethos? I've heard people say that before, but I've never understood it, and I feel like there's something obvious I'm missing.

Honestly, for me, I can't really pinpoint the exact reasoning I have for saying that. It's been decades since I've played and I only recall a smattering info about the Clans. So I could, and probably am, incorrect about the whole "dueling and short range thing".

Piecing the snippets of stuff I do remember together just seemed to equate the short range brawling/dueling with the Clans style of fighting. . .

I would also have to say that "Clan Honor" fit in there somewhere but then I would be thinking of it as Clan V Is and not Clan V Clan. In which the latter would be just as well equipped so the whole honor thing would be moot.

TLDR; Personal opinion based on half remembered information . . ? :/ Sorry

the best warriors are accurate shooting 'from the hip' not at long range taking their time waiting for that weapons lock tone.
see https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Gunslinger_Program

Determined to prevent any more loss of both men, material and honor, the Advanced Combat and Maneuvering Skills Project was started to produce superior duelists to take on the Combine warriors. The new program included a wide range of material, from ancient Asian martial philosophies to advanced neural-thought technology. The first graduating class of 2687 consisted of 52 warriors, all of whom were stationed within the Draconis Combine.[2] In the first-ever fight between these new Gunslingers and the ronin, Colonel Donovan Fresnel was able to fight his opponent to a draw after an hour of combat. Just ten days later, Lieutenant Karen Graham was able to defeat a ronin on Awano.

and what the article doesnt go into is that these 'Gunslingers' were not just superior marksmen at range but equally deadly accurate up close.
also during melee they were able to maneuver their mechs in ways most pilots wouldnt believe possible.
and this was long before the clans stole the idea and corrupted it.

Snipers have had plenty of duels. I don't think any clanner would be unimpressed by Carlos Hathcock. The guy shot another sniper through his own scope from 500 yards. He was probably a fraction of a second away from losing that argument.

I’d really like to check out the games involved. : )

The company name was something about halls and guilds. I think. I won't link or state outright because this is still Paradox's forum :)

On the whole "unpopular opinions" thing, my unpopular opinion is that everyone wants "my mech customization" and then has a problem with boating. Which can only be done due to mech customization . . .

Unless you want to boat PPCs.

aws-8q.jpg

Or medium lasers, as there's the HBK-4P "Swayback" . . . or LRMs, as there's the ARC-2R Archer and CPLT-C1 or C4 Catapult....

Plenty of "boats" out there for weapons. Even the Small Laser, which has the Charger.

Anyone he catch the name of RyRy and Jordan’s new company?

@CmdrDunsail, were you trying to post it’s link during the livestream tonight?

Greetings PH!

Indeed. The company name is Guildhall Studios. Their Twitter account is Guildhallstudio (no ending "s") o7

No, don't worry about it. The thing is, BT - everywhere - has evidence in stock/canon of things people really hate about aspects. Details often chided for existing in "really bad fanfic" probably happened in at least one novel or official story. 'Mechs being groaned at for boating have boats par excellence in stock configs of others - seriously the AWS-8Q is such a great example of it done right, it's hard to do it better in a way which can be sustainable and well-armored until much later. For everything weight-saving stuff like XL engines or Endo-Steel can let you do, it's less expensive to throw Urbies at the problem until it either goes away or gives up ;)

It's one of the highlights of the IP, much as there is in D&D - with the right people to sit down at a table, anything can happen or be made up to happen. It's things like this which draw us all in and keep us here.

Me too! Info on one of Jordan's new games can be found at sea of legends game (all one word, with a .com) - from Guildhall Studios.

Jordan's created some of my favorite game universes and games, like BATTLETECH! So, I'm eager to learn more. Who knows, maybe some day Paradox might publish a video game version of his new board game too? :D
