Arriving at actual facts is difficult. It requires time and investment and even then sometimes all one reaps is error.

Is it so surprising that expedient is compelling?
Humans are excellent at estimating. Is it any wonder that facts being difficult to arrive at and estimation so much easier to utilize one is preferred over the other as expedient? Even when it is prone to error. Especially when so I many "facts" turn out to not be facts?

Then add exhaustion, being pressed for time, laziness, or just plain lack of resources or opportunity to source facts.

Water takes the path of least resistance, and sometimes so do we all.

 :)

Not suprised.

Simply ranting.

From my PoV, too few humans seek out thier own opinions, data, and facts, preferring to take the path of least resistance and join a 'team'...
Others, if not most of the species, do not agree with my PoV.

Nothing new. :)

Likewise we are all intimately familiar with error.
Imho error is not a bad thing.
It is educational. Provided the error is approached conscientiously. Without hubris.

If all of us did that... :D well I guess we wouldn't be human if we all always did that.

A group is as good or bad as its composite elements.

A group of bank robbers. Not so good.
Apollo mission control and support staff?
Pretty good.

But I'll stop and be good now. Sorry for being wordy today.

IME, a group can be far more or far less than it's individual parts.

Just like this board, I have fellow employees that start conversations with 'I cannot imagine' and then I (or someone else) shows them several options...that they apparently 'could not imagine' that others have done for years.

I don't let those (nice people) who choose to fail slow us down...if anything, they teach us how to show others things to imagine...

So very tired of having these people in the world that are aggressively ignorant though...

Since I am very disillusioned with the world today, I too am being wordy. :)

A danger is that sometimes we might miss that we are in fact rooting for one side or another.

As an example, talking about tribalism in the sphere of politics... [Mod edit: no politics]

Sure, there are dangers of becoming part of the team.
TBH, I am not actually talking 'politics' with my outlook as much as basic human behaviour, or at least that is my attempt. :)

My issue is simple, I am tired of cleaning up after lazy, aggressively ignorant people that mess things up, and then being called the bad guy for pointing it out... :)

I am well aware there are hidden complexities and elegant solutions to things.
IME humans think feelings are more important than facts and I (try to) live my life based on logic and data.
Since I know how things work, I get called in to fix them, then get anger/hate because I know how to fix them and pointed out ways to not break it again...

In fact, the entire idea of attaching emotions to data is absurd to my mind, and plenty of people have told me I am crazy just from that...

Personal responsibility is not popular, from my PoV.
The aggresively ignorant keep my bank account working, but I still don't like them. :)

Most of the time, I just refer to the speech Loki gives in Avengers.
While in the movie there are those that speak out, they are far fewer than the masses willing to kneel because it is easier.

The whole thing, to me, revolves around asking others to make choices for you, when you should make them yourself, from your own research.

'Professional' sports, IMO, does nothing but train people to think of teams and abdicate personal resposibility.
I can't help laughing at this. Sports culture varies wildly.

Hockey, for instance. You will rarely (if ever) see a player talking about how they were the difference maker, and bragging about how great they are; conversely, they will readily fall on their sword when their mistake (even if made passively) costs their team. The team is paramount, yes, but only because individuals take personal responsibility and are willing to sacrifice their personal comfort and safety for the sake of the team.

You won't find the same kind of attitude among basketball players.

Generalizing sports culture into a monolithic entity glosses over the very real nuances between them, to the detriment of whatever point one is trying to make.

That is kind of interesting. There's an interesting cultural undercurrent to the history of rugby where one of the major codes of rugby, rugby union, for a very long time only allowed amateur players. The reason for this was entirely due to snobbery: if you can afford to not get paid to play, you're obviously independently wealthy and therefore the kind of person they'd want joining the club.

That said, I'm pretty sure @MajorPrankster was referencing the fans, not the players.

Hockey was very similar at point point, where the only people who played "professionally" were the ones who were independently wealthy and could do so without being monetarily compensated.

In any event, if that is what MP was referring to then they should've/would've specified tribalism/mob mentality surrounding fans of professional sports, rather than simply "professional sports". I read that line as more a swipe at sports culture in general, rather than at the tribal tendencies of fans specifically.

Yeah, and you see, where your team goes wrong is that they're dancing. That is definitely not how you play rugby :p

No kidding - I just pop in here randomly after a hundred pages or so, and everybody's being so darned civil with each other. I don't think most people would expect this from a community that gathers over a mutual love of giant fighting robots and brutal interstellar warfare.

By the way, a couple pages late, but...

I've always been a sucker for metal backed by an orchestra:
