Betrothing and educating grandchildren

I have clocked atm 130h of ck2 and have played as different sorts of rulers. And there is one thing that always seemed ot be a hindrance. The impossibility of betrothing your grandchildren (especially the first son of my firstborn) and educating them.
I often found myself having the first two rulers of the game ,being decent vis a vis stats and marriages to most of the time later end up with lesser kings.

Any thoughts ? Would it be historically inaccurate for the king to tell his son ,who to marry or betrothe the grandson to?

Keep your kids in your court. If your grandchildren are in your court, you can betroth them to a 90 year old cougar if you so desire.

I think it's a little silly from a logical (and possibly historical) perspective that you have to choose between landing your firstborn child and having ANY control over who their children's marriage decisions. That said, I think it's completely ridiculous from a gameplay perspective. If you choose to land your heir, you avoid the loss of a very large amount of prestige from keeping them in court (unless your under gavelkind...but seriously who would do that lol) as well as allow them to begin accruing prestige of their own which makes succession far, far easier and, ya know, increasing your score. However, by landing them you not only forfeit any ability to control their children's marriage, but also allow them to spam grand hunts/fairs etc. and generally get themselves tons of bad traits. Keeping them in court limits the ability to fuck up their traits and their children's marriage decisions at the cost of (quite a lot) of prestige and, in my opinion, a loss of immersion. To be honest, this is one of my biggest gripes with the game. While there is effectively no solution to the trait problem, i think the marriage one is a relatively easy fix.

Landing heirs and possible pretenders is typically a huge negative opinion modifier in most of the Christian succession laws at least.

I would generally recommend never landing your children in a majority of situations. You avoid negative opinion, rebellions, future claim succession wars, and all your offspring will be in your court so you can marry and educate them at your will.

I agree on all counts except for your heir. I feel like the game adequately encourages you to marry your other sons off to landed women. I also agree that it is objectively better to take the prestige hit than to land ANY of your sons, including your heir. I take issue with the fact that it IS better to take the prestige hit for arbitrary reasons. The ability to manage marriages/receive alerts regarding tutoring for children in your main line regardless of where they are (perhaps so long as they are in your realm) seems like a relatively realistic change which would totally reverse the incentive on landing your heir. If you could more actively manage your main line regardless of your heir being landed there would be no question as to whether or not to land him.

I guess this is one of those times I wish I knew more about modding. Maybe one could write an event that fires when the heir to a character with the "is player" flag has a child, that child is moved to the player characters court; perhaps, once again, with logic stating that this would only be done provided the heir was in the player character's realm at the time of the child's birth. This seems like a rather blunt instrument to attack this problem, but I offer this question: if the game worked like that, would you ever NOT land your heir?

Id really like someone of paradox replying on this. This is something that has bugged me too much.
Even if you have a 3 year old son ,who is a duke ,thx to a dieing mother; it should be feasible that you are able to educate and betrothe him to anyone.

Landed children shouldn't act like normal vassals. They can revolt, but you should still be allowed to control them.
And you should definitely be allowed to defend them in civil wars and punish those who usurp their titles (or at least take the usurped titles back) without being a tyrant.

The easiest way to be able to control (educate+betroth)your grandchildren is to Keep your primary Heir landless and in your Court.Make him a councillor if he has the stats but otherwise just leave him be.That way your grand children can be educated by you and you can betroth them to whoever you choose.

If you ever land an heir NEVER give him more than a barony. That way if he dies while your grand child is a minor you will still be able to educate him and betroth him.

(When he is about 15,use character search for landless girls with great stats.invite to court.easiest to say yes.go to his character screen arrange betrothal. He will accept. When he turns 16 you will get marriage notice.push button.)

Last patch changed so that you can educate your children always regardless of what they inherit. I was still a duke when my son inherited Galacia and became ruler in a different realm. I managed to keep educating him and I betroth young he had a good marriage. The only problem was I died when he was 12 and took over and older son who couldn't educate him.

The problem with not landing your sons is that most of them eventually start bugging you about being landed which if you deny costs you a major negative opinion with that person. Next thing you know you've got a plot and/or faction of them using their claim on your kingdom which forces you to throw them in jail causing yet more negative opinion from them...
