  • Crusader Kings II
Having shepherded Denmark through all the vicissitudes of Crusader Kings 2 (losing all its Swedish territories in the process and fighting off five or six separate Swedish/Gotlander invasions of Sjaelland), I converted it into EU4. Foreseeing a day when Sweden and Hamburg would grind Denmark into powder between them, Denmark's rulers heavily invested in colonization projects, eventually establishing power bases in North America, South Africa, Australasia, the Spice Islands, and most spectacularly Eastern Siberia, which is likely to become the future site of the capital (it's in Micmac now, after Sjaelland was finally conquered in 1552).

None of this would have been possible without the initial landfall in South America. Shortly after that happened, my Brazilian colonies achieved independence (somehow) as "Danish Brazil" (ditching the "Danish" shortly thereafter). Cool, I thought; this'll save my forces time and energy (controlling Trinidad and St. Helena as I do, the communication links between North America and the rest of the Danish diaspora are pretty secure). Once the eighteenth century rolled around, though, Denmark suddenly found itself in a war with France (controlling England and half of Spain as well) because Brazil decided to go to war with a nearby French colony. The war lasted twenty years, and I was lucky it didn't completely bankrupt the treasury, though much of the navy went down in battle. France became as war-weary as Denmark, and the terms of surrender were thankfully light. Barely fifteen years later, though, they're at it again. I'll probably just follow the attrition strategy I did last time, but I am pissed at Brazil. Haven't they learned anything? If there was a "betray colonies" option, I'd take it in a heartbeat (just wish there was some way to suddenly ally with France or at least cut the bastards loose). I already sent them an insult, and am working on increasing their liberty desire to the point where they'll want nothing to do with me.

There's not really a question there; just had to vent. Thanks.

I get annoyed at my supposedly 'loyal' colonies sometimes for going on adventures while Europe is kept in the dark. For instance, as a result of a war with Spain, I took a chunk of Spanish Brazil and gave it to my Brazil. While I wasn't looking, Spanish Brazil attacked my Brazil and took its provinces back. Couldn't my colony have called on my help, or at least notified me that it was in a war? It seems the only way to secure your gains in this situation is either a) completely wipe out the opposing colonial nation or b) constantly monitor your colony in case it gets into trouble and needs an 'Enforce Peace' from the motherland. The other annoying thing is that I don't get a CB to retake those provinces, because it's my colony that has the cores, not me.

Well, you could set your colonies as nations of interest, and then set the message settings to inform you when they get declared on (I'm fairly sure this is possible). But yeah, I agree, this should be a default.

Nice story, but how did you manage to get kicked out of Europe?

Sweden had it in for me from the beginning, possibly as the result of a CK2 grudge. They started out as the Republic of Gotland and eventually swelled to become the Republic of Sweden by the 1400s. Minor niggle was that the King of Denmark was, for a brief period in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, the King of Sweden as well, and I think they always felt threatened. Come EU4, their navy dwarfed mine, as did Hamburg's, and they basically teamed up to take away provinces one by one. In 1552, Sjaelland finally fell, and I was basically forced to relocate (as I found later) to Micmac. Weird thing was that Poland at one point forced Sweden to give back Midtjylland for a couple of f decades in the late seventeenth century, and I only found this out through a random scan of the map. I'm actually fine with being forced out of Europe; it'll be interesting to see if Denmark can reorient itself as a primarily Northeast Asian power (I have a feeling this new war will pretty much do for the Danes in North America, unless I can pull off the massive attrition strategy I have in mind). Hopefully I can hold some fire for the Qing and Japan.

I wish my CN's would declare war, but they are boxed in by natives and the bastards absolutely refuse to declare war on natives.
