Having shepherded Denmark through all the vicissitudes of Crusader Kings 2 (losing all its Swedish territories in the process and fighting off five or six separate Swedish/Gotlander invasions of Sjaelland), I converted it into EU4. Foreseeing a day when Sweden and Hamburg would grind Denmark into powder between them, Denmark's rulers heavily invested in colonization projects, eventually establishing power bases in North America, South Africa, Australasia, the Spice Islands, and most spectacularly Eastern Siberia, which is likely to become the future site of the capital (it's in Micmac now, after Sjaelland was finally conquered in 1552).
None of this would have been possible without the initial landfall in South America. Shortly after that happened, my Brazilian colonies achieved independence (somehow) as "Danish Brazil" (ditching the "Danish" shortly thereafter). Cool, I thought; this'll save my forces time and energy (controlling Trinidad and St. Helena as I do, the communication links between North America and the rest of the Danish diaspora are pretty secure). Once the eighteenth century rolled around, though, Denmark suddenly found itself in a war with France (controlling England and half of Spain as well) because Brazil decided to go to war with a nearby French colony. The war lasted twenty years, and I was lucky it didn't completely bankrupt the treasury, though much of the navy went down in battle. France became as war-weary as Denmark, and the terms of surrender were thankfully light. Barely fifteen years later, though, they're at it again. I'll probably just follow the attrition strategy I did last time, but I am pissed at Brazil. Haven't they learned anything? If there was a "betray colonies" option, I'd take it in a heartbeat (just wish there was some way to suddenly ally with France or at least cut the bastards loose). I already sent them an insult, and am working on increasing their liberty desire to the point where they'll want nothing to do with me.
There's not really a question there; just had to vent. Thanks.
