The fact that most modder activities have transferred mostly to discord and the forums are more or less a second rate place saddens me deeply. I still think that forum structure is way more productive to communicate longer thoughts than a chat program.Couldn't agree more. Discord is great for a group of people who plays MP games, a small community of modders, or other small, self-defined communities. But for bigger crowds, it's chaotic.
In my experience, game (and thus mod) design isn’t about long thoughts, it’s about conversations. Sure, it's me. Chatting is quite distracting for me.In my experience, game (and thus mod) design isn’t about long thoughts, it’s about conversations. Discord is much better for development than a forum
Hard disagree, at a certain level of activity Discord makes it pretty much impossible to track discussions and conversations, especially by topic, the forum is much better suited for that kind of discussion. In my experience, game (and thus mod) design isn’t about long thoughts, it’s about conversations. Something about the whole interaction of this thread gives me the mental image of the forum users as Paradox’s obsessive crazy girlfriend. “He didn’t say anything about the patch being a day late to me, he just said it to discord, he doesn’t even love me anymore, I bet he’s leaving me” and then a dev needs to come in and reassure us that it’s okayHey folks! Just popping in to say that it has never been our intention to abandon the forum in favour of Discord. We see them as two sides of a coin, and we want them to work in harmony. In the case of the Beta Program we felt Discord were more suited to our work flow and how we collect data, but the idea was always to still share the relevant information with you forumites. Clearly we dropped the ball on this a bit, so we'll try to work harder on that in the future!

Which is bad if you consider the different time zones, especially if you live in the west coast of America. I'm not really a fan of waking up at 4am to get updates.Discord makes it practically impossible to reasonably track discussion if you arent online all the time/are online at different times than most users, pretty close to objectively horrible for servers with more than a dozen or so active users.
As they now have 'forum' channels as well as the 'text' and 'voice' channels they can be used for both the real-time chatting and the longer term discussions. (I personally still prefer a traditional forum.)Discord makes it practically impossible to reasonably track discussion if you arent online all the time/are online at different times than most users, pretty close to objectively horrible for servers with more than a dozen or so active users.
