The only problem I have with that answer is that certain people (Mac & Steam users, as I understand it), cannot use them.

I am speaking not for myself, because I'm using the patch just fine, but for others. I am conscious of this because I was unable to play the game when it 1st came out, until I think the 3rd beta. If there are other users who still are stuck with 5.0, despite the later patches, I believe that is the problem. I am emphatically not speaking (here) of fixing what I see as flaws in the game, but of enabling many users to play the patched version. Right now, they cannot.
Mac users are the only people that can't use the beta.

Sadly, I agree. I don't want to start a grand campaign til 5.1 is final, but the wait is agonizing. A month since the last update now.
Just start a game then, it's not like the patches haven't been save compatible.

Well, the workaround works without any patching needed. I agree that a patch is nice, but there is no pressing need to release the patch to fix the only game-breaking bug: the bloated savegames.

It was almost a year after HttT was released that the official patch for it was released. And the official patch was almost 7 months after the last public beta.

You're missing something very important. At that time someone made a post which attracted a lot of attention, in which he asked why the patch is still in the beta stage when DW is about to be released. And then beta was hurried to completion, which introduced some bug (don't remeber what it was, but in the end beta was better than final patch).

If it wasn't for that post and that stir it caused, HTTT patch would still be in beta.

With that attitude, the next Paradox game will only be playable while standing, or you'll get ctd every 5 minutes. But since players can stand and play, there is "no pressing need to release the patch to fix the only game-breaking bug".

The final patch introduced a ledger CTD and stopped most of the large mods with complex maps from working so yes the beta HTT 4-2010 is better than the HTT final.

If I understand correctly Eu3 chronicles ( everything up to and including DW) is on sale fairly cheap at gamers gate?? If I was using steam I would buy the full version instead and just use the beta patches. I don't know if mac users could buy the windows version and run it in some kind of emulation mode? If so do what you can to be able to run the betas as the official patches are few and far between.

You seem to have missed my point which was that the patching time is not "getting worse" as claimed in the post I replied to; we have a way to go before things are worse than the HttT patch situation. And as 17blue17 describes, the late rush to get an 'official' patch out for HttT did seem to cause some significant problems.

A previous post on this thread touched upon my question about patching the game. I just recieved my CD copy of Europa Universalis: Chronicles which includes all the expansions. Assumably that edition should be patched up to the time it was released but how can one tell which version of the game it is and is the Divine Wind patch 5.1beta the latested cummulative patch for my game?

I got a "stopped working upon exit" after I quit playing my first game of EUIII:Chronicles on Vista. The same problem presented itself in Rome:Vae Victus which I solved simply by installing the most current patch.

The best way would be to compare the check sum to the list in the tech support forum but you have to register the game to do that and I understand there is some problem registering chronicles at the moment???? I think the most current check sum would be DCOA

You could also look at the date of the eu3game.exe file. The latest beta would be dated 5-16-11 for the 5-17-11 beta.

Okay, I see that I didn't miss a version number but that the checksum indicates such. I probably will be able to register the game as it looks like the difficulties center around Steam/DLC versions whereas mine is a hardcopy CD edition.

I can promise that the CD copy of your game will include no 'beta' patches. You will want to install the latest beta patch.
