I chose a mix. No point fighting against the inevitable as it will just drive militancy up too fast, but going too fast for liberalism loses you much control over the state early on (and I wanted to make sure the factories were initially pushing out miltary goods to keep my armies in top-shape).
I'd suggest that you should build up a large army and attack Russia to release Poland, and then try to get the Baltic states and Poland into your SOI, and I'm quite sure that there are a lot of germans living in the Baltics, and they would like to be in the SOI of their fatherland.

But the AAR was stopped at the unification of Germany, I was playing the game with an old build and wanted to get to try out all the cool fixes in later builds, and continuing with an old save was not an option anymore

Oh I love the flexibility displayed in those events! E.g. if Prussia/NGF dismantles the Austrian Empire sufficently, and puts Austria in its own SOI, Prussia/NGF will inherit Austria !

Puppetization and sphere-inclusion are probably going to incur infamy costs, so it might not be as peaceful as you think. Not to mention that Austria will likely have its own allies, and dragging them down to minor status (not to mention keeping them there long enough to build up influence and bring them into your sphere) might require a bit too much warfare to stay unnoticed by the Great Powers
France and Russia might pounce on you if you get too much infamy, and they might also attack even if you have low infamy, merely because they can

I'm not 100% sure why this AAR was released. To ground expectations? It looked like huge fun, but some of the stuff shown was... odd, in a disappointing way. To get things straight, I'm not expecting a balanced release - instead I want a fun one that can be tweaked into perfection. And it doesn't hurt to have some honesty about what's being released. But why publish an AAR where half the responses are "this has been changed since then, take our word for it"?

The name does indeed mean unity and justice, shortened from the German national anthem (Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit, ie Unity and Justice and Freedom; Freedom not being one of the themes of the AAR
