Germany: Great ... until you fight the Russians. (v 1.06)
Poland, Finland, the Philippines, Ethiopia: I love going down fighting.
France: Similar appeal, but you can not just survive but win! Problem is that the AI gets cowardly if you build too many fortifications.
America: I like researching, but the logistics penalties are killer.
Brazil: How far can you take her?

*It is almost impossible to repel Soviets from Fatherland.
Unfortunately the spirit of Winter War isn't modelled in HoI's code.

What??? I destroyed five soviet divissions and then they don't attacket any more... (Bad English) :rofl:
I think the whole Russian Army Inteligence went up in HoI. That's teh biggest reason they can easily steamroll Finland.

A brief report of my current game as France (1.06, normal, normal).
It's my first time, actually.
Strategy seemed pretty obvious:
- build landforts in all three adjacent provinces to Belgium (reached level 5 when Germany started the war) and some AA.
- build AA in all Maginot-provinces (reached level 10!)
- build coastal and landforts in north Africa and southern France
- tons of infantry and inf. techs and doctrines.

I sent exp. forces to rep. Spain during the civil war (3 corps, some 25 divs) and one fleet (12 ships).
I controlled the landforces myself and finished the war within few months.
Where is my fleet???
It just disappeared, never saw it again.
Anything like that happened to someone else?

In autumn 1939, after the Germans annexed Poland, Holland, Belgium and Luxemburg, they attacked me.
Or shall I say, bombed me?
With absolutely no airforce (I have some, but it's based safe in Paris), I decimated the whole German bomber divs.
AA is a pretty great invention for France.
The German landforces never dared to attack me.
They keep building bombers, but they keep getting shot into pieces.
I have 170 landunits, Germany about the same amount. Their only advantage are mechs and tanks which I don't have at all.
Navy? Britain has about 180 ships, Germany now only 24.

Italy will seemingly never join the Axis and even if, it wouldn't help.
The Brits have already invaded Bulgaria!
It is early 1941 and France is not that bad at all.
It's a bit boring, but I think it's time to wonder who will reach Berlin first, Allies or Russians?

Anyway, on this difficulty setting I had major problems playing as Germany on 1.06.

I have had much fun as the Soviets (1.06/.8) - with the benefit of ahistorical foresight I tech the hell out of my infantry, build huge border forts, and stop Barbarossa in its tracks.
Then, smash the Axis minors with armor, pocket the Germans, annihilate them, roll on through to Paris, and get ready to throw down with the plutocrats of the west. Silly Americans - as if their nuclear strikes on Rostock, Berlin, and other such lairs of the former fascist beast bother me in the slightest.
The only drag on the enjoyment is the 10% dow penalty. Takes way too damned long of dumping IC into CG to get that down. Slows down the red tide rolling all over those hapless little Countries and makes complete World Domination about impossible.
I have always wanted to really give it a go as Republican Spain. I would think if you could get past Franco and didn't get invaded by Germany you could have all sorts of fun nipping at the heels of Italy and Vichy France.

Spain looks like a suitable choice. Is there a point to playing austria? I've been thinking about it a lot lately.
Having one heck of a time as Japan right now. Their game starts slow, but it makes up for the wait.
The Japanese get to sweep through great open spaces, struggle endlessly in mountains, conduct death-or-glory amphibious assaults, steal so much territory while the Allies are distracted that it's not even funny, romp around with a pretty good fleet, build up a major industrial power (potentially the equal of Great Britain) through brutal colonial exploitation (first time I've used a Prince of Terror!), and discover some half-way decent tech.
Superb leaders, great mix of cabinet ministers, resources for the plundering - the Japs have it all. Right now I'm doing a coin-flip to decide on my next adventure: finish crushing China, take the Netherlands East Indies, sweep through the far southern Pacific, puppet Siam, or invade India. Choices, choices.

Yes I did! I too loaned a fleet to Spain, and saw them keep it!
I was most unhappy! Never sent out expeditionary forces of anything but land units again!

Try playing France with a house rule: No new forts. The AI becomes *much* more frisky. You may wind up commanding your forces from Cayenne yet.
Is there no way to Tech up the French army in time to stop the Germans in France?
I played and thought I did a good job but then the Germans just cruised through me like Paris was nothing buta little whiny speedbump.

I have injoyed playing France but the game is too short when I do. If I don't get smoked I stop the Germans bomb them to death encircle and destroy and often I am in Berlin by '42 or '43.
Hungary was fun in my last game. I did get mad when I had pretty much taken Yugolsavia for myself only to have Germany liberate Croatia and Serbia so I lost my port. It also got bad after we had caprured Lenningrad and Moscow but unable to get Stalingrad, the Russians had us outnumbered by at least 3-1 maybe more there was no way we could expand. The Russians had yet to counter attack I could have gone into the middle east but I needed troops to hold the border. One other cool thing is when the war with Russia started Romania joined the Cominterm so I assumed control of Bulgaria and was able to get control of most of Romania including all their oil.
I like the UK but to much to keep and eye on and it is hard to control their Navy in my last game I somehow lost 60% of my fleet to the Regia Marina??
