Fun challenges in least to greatest order:

5. France.

A challenge to stop the germans, but counter attack can be limited, and victory stolen by the SU.

4. China. Ditto to France, but since no one is really there to bail you out (US is slow in reacting), you can gain some satisfaction in eventually beating the japanese sometimes.

3. UK. If you like multiple fronts and lots of strategic decision making, this is the country for you.

2. Germany. The game is built for Germany so it wouldmake sense they were amoung the funnest to play.

1. Sweden.

You get to play the Swedish national hockey team in the 36 Olympics. They later assume assasin roles and you get to play a different game trying to inflitrate enemy headquarters and assasinaating.

Best country:

- Germany

Most fun, most options, plus historic centre of WW2

- all countries which can have the might to change history AND are located in Europe or Asia, I just don't like to do seabourne invasions all around the clock.

-----------------
Worst countries:

- all midgets (Tannu Tuva, Luxemburg...)

- Portugal (what options do you have? Intervened in the spanish civil war, Allies DoW'ed me, you can just sit and wait)

- USA (boring, too easy, major flaw: when the hell can you start a war???)

- all countries with many colonies

That may just apply for me, but I just hate it. I don't wanna defend half the globe. Convois? Once war starts they are a pain in the ass, you can't be everywhere.

The USA is crap in single player as the AI just tends to cock the rest of the war up while you can't do anything.

Also the Soviet Union/UK/Germany/Japan/Italy + others are all capable of taking on the whole world (AI controlled) and winning if played correctly.

You proved my point nicely, as anyone with an I.Q over that of an Gopher could not possibly be annexed or puppeted, or "lose" (quotations because not many people use victory points as a determination of winning/losing, often simply surviving is winning). And since theres no real possiblity of defeat, how is it challenging? And Im my opinon, anything thats overly easy or not challening does not equal 'fun'.

Seems to me the people that think the U.S is a fun game, are the same people who think shooting caged birds qualifies as hunting.

But hey, every player is entitled to their own jollies, I suppose that trying to see how early you can Nuke the AI can qualify as entertainment.

Why does avoiding defeat have to be the only way a game can be challenging?

I personally love playing as the USA because I don't have to worry about myself getting hammered. Instead, I have to manage the world's biggest economy, direct it, and help protect my allies, while having to work around the logistics penalty since I can't conquer anything I want.

Seems to me the people who think playing the USA is boring are either warmongers who complain about a democracy being unable to declare war on whoever they want (imagine that!) or people who think they are somehow 'superior' because they like to play as the little ass-end-of-the-earth countries and get the crap beat out of them.

1.I don't get the crap beaten out of me.

2.I guess the H.O.I equivalent of kicking someone in a wheel chair doesn't appeal to me as much as it does to you.

No Offense meant but:

Isn't the point of a W.A.R. G.A.M.E. to actually do some fighting? How hard is it really to control the US economy. Not enough CG? Just adjust the sliders. Ifyou bought HOI to sit on your bum and adjust sliders and do nothing exciting but research than by all means enjoy it. Most people when they play a game like to play the Underdog, be it the side that lost or something little. The best part of military sims in try to see if you can do better than the guys that tried. The US can be fun but I'd prefer slogging in the mud at the front of the battle instead of sitting in the back row "helping" my allies do what the probably could do without out me.

So In closing this is my final thought. You can have the US just remember the shuttlt to Alpha Centauri is NOT in the tech tree. :D

Make fun of my spelling if you want, I'm sure that should make you feel 'superior'. :D

Alright, you two have forced the truth out of me!

I play the USA the most because....I'm terrified of the USSR!

Yes, it's true, I admit it! I used to love playing as Germany, still do, in fact, right up until Barbarossa. 1.06 USSR kicked my ass so hard, I now have USSR-a-phobia.

Every time, except once in CORE .7, the USSR destroys me. Nothing I do helps. If I have allies, they get stomped. If I encircle, they break out. And there's so...many..infantry...and they're all coming for me!

Yes, I went crazy over the weeks spent planning to defeat the USSR. Then, I took over the USA....yes...now I have the power I need to crush Communism! I shall destroy them....*crazy laughter*

Wow

Well I don't think the US is " too good " or " not difficult ". I think the US i what is is, the worlds largest economy. I don't see how having to fight a two front war, support the allies and then then manage to do it well enough to change history and gameflow. I won't resort to the rude comments I've seen posted here so far, most of it sounding like typical anti-american BS that it is.

For me, imho, what makes the US great is not only to I get to go head to head with the jap navy, the 2nd best in the world. I also get to go head to head with the german army, the best in the world, and if that is not enough I can fight the commies on the fields of eastern europe in 46.
I keep seeing people say " too much ic " or " not enough challange ". Well hey, the IC dosen't come fully into effect till late 41, and the challange is still there, you have to send your troops 3000 miles to fight, with a MASSIVE supply penality.

Um Then why are you even talking about them?

Anyways I think this should probably come to a head as The HOI forums are great and I have no wish to cause people to troll or flame.

Rocketman. I agree playing 1.06 as Germany the Russians scare me. I played a russian game and I had little dificulty defeating Germany and have been whooping allied butt.

I do not say that playing USA is easy. It is my personal opion that it is not a great challenge. Maybe I don't like it because you have to use too many boats and too many planes both of which I think my brain hasn't been able to grasp how to yet. Something about airplains and boats in strategy games confuses me. C&C does the same thing to me as well.

The hardest chance that EU2 and HOI has forced me to deal with is I cannot take over the whole world. It's hard for me to set smaller goals than that.

If people want a game they can't lose by all means its your money, I'm not going to tell you how to play. But don't tell me that USA ranks in the top 10 as far as challenges.

Simply invade Ireland to get the suply penalty to go away.

Bah with the mighty power of the US economy behind you it shouldn't take long to drop that dissent. You figure .10% per day it will only take 10 days per 1% so in a year your back to normal and you'll have Ireland. Maybe you'll get lucky and have a Parade. Elections can drop your dissent also. Other than that I say you could let your allies suply you. If you dont care about gettin provinces for yourself. When you get closer to europe, say you land your forces in britain to prepare to invade france. Create new units and put the whole old unit into the new ones. The new units will be suplied by the british. So the logistics penalty will be much smaller.

Why is playing the USA fun?

The USA is in the best defensible position in the game. Massive oceans to the east and west, Mexico and other horribly weak nations to the south, Allied Canada to the north, and you must take every mainland province to annex.

You usually wind up having to manage a two front war, one oceanic, the other terran.

You have at your command the mightiest industrial machine on the planet, enabling you to research everything and still pump out a massive army.

You can join any of the three alliances.

Blue is a much nicer color to paint the world, a lot more soothing than gray or red.

'Cos yanks have enormous resources.

Had a lot of fun playing as the Italians.

Spun out the Ethiopian war, and got great experience and skill 5 leaders. Puppetted the nation instead of annexing it, so my guys would not have to rely on seaborne supplies.

Researched heavily early on, and got an ego-boost by helping out those sinkholes of ignorance Germany and Japan.

Traded like a fiend in the international raw materials market, and managed to max out all my resources at one point.

Crushed Albania in the righteous Roman way.

Joined the Axis soon after Germany's war began.

Fought hard to save Ethiopia. Suceeded. Mountains are cool.

Decided I had better things to do than to attack Greece or Yugoslavia.

Crushed the French navy, stole Bastia, Tunisia, and the French border provinces.

Wiped out more than half of the British fleet with torpedo planes and Il Duce-class battleships.

Slaughtered invading Aussies, Kiwis, Springboks, and Canucks. At one point, Australia didn't have a fleet 'cause I'd sunk it all.

Took Malta, Egypt, Syria, and turned Iraq into a puppet state. Took coastal Arabia.

Romped around in the Indian Ocean. Seized Ceylon (not easy), gave it its independance, declared war on it, and turned it into a puppet state.

Romped around in the Pacific. Took Singapore, got a lock-down on the rubber market.

Shared the loot with pathetic little helpless Germany.
