So I have been playing with some mods and it seems like adding official mod support has made things a bit of a mess.

Is Modtek still viable? Which is the best option Modtek or Official? Is there a place with proper instructions for using either method? Does one method make the other not work?

I share your uncertainty.

I am awaiting further word or a patch from HBS.

Honestly, I've been using mods that require modtek, and having no issues doing it that way. And will continue to do so until HBS releases a patch to fix their in game mod loader.

One thing I will suggest, go either one route or the other, using both the official mod support method and modtek together will only lead to troubles.

ModTek is certainly viable. "Best" .. ModTek has more features, updates more often, have less problems, have better logging. Official ModLoader have official devs support and do not need to run injector on game update. Which is best for you it can decide only you.
About instructions - some said ModTek readme on github is pretty well, even official modding documentation refers it.

this is not exactly correct, cause modern ModTek versions disabling ModLoader once enabled. So, they can't be used together.

Learned something new today. :)

I didn't realize that they had updated modtek to disable and over-ride the in game loader. It's good to know that the modders are on top of things though.

This is exactly why I haven't updated my ModTek past the first version that supported 1.8... I want to be able to test mods on both systems easily.

Are there specific known problems with using both? I haven't noticed anything myself.

modtek 0.7.5.1 have errors - for example it can't load dynamic enums properly, even factions. And btw, do you know - using modern modtek version you can easily switch between modtek and modloader by enabling and disabling modtek in mods menu?

Ah... it didn't occur to me that ModTek itself would go in the mods menu. Makes a ton of sense, though, and sounds handy.
