Friends, Romans, countrymen: what's the best way to generate new characters? More provinces, more citizens, more revenue, invoke the new character omen, capture and turn assassins, what's the trick?

Just want even fellows to run my Legions and naval squadrons, even if they're lousy ones. Do I need to turn my current governors into army leaders to get new governors created? Or watch the pool to make sure women who turn up are assigned to governships before they can be married off? (Sometimes they are married off anyway, which still means I need a new governor.)

How do I increase the character pool?

Annex a bunch of provinces and then save and reload. Any province without a governor will generate one upon reload. So I guess the exploit would be to clear the governors from a ton of provinces and save/reload Otherwise, leaders are spawned over time. Besides those that are explicitly born as children.

I found this did not work when I fired a whole bunch of govenors assigned them to navy army groups and save reloaded, I still had a deficiet of people.

I don't know about this reloading trick, never heard that before.

I find that every time I run out of characters because they've all been assigned, and still have some vacant positions, if I run the game forward a few months a few more characters always seem to get randomly generated. The only exception sometimes seems to be if i have a bunch of unassigned women, so I try to find them some jobs.

I do think there is some code built in to randomly generate a handful of new characters for you if you run out, just not sure exactly what triggers this. For this to work though, it does mean you have to give jobs to all your incompetent fools. I usually try to find them a backwater governorship with an unpleasant climate where they can stay out of trouble.

You could always do what I did also.
Go into the history--->chracters folder within your main rome directory and add a bunch(I added like 10) female characters, make them around the age of 17 when your game starts and voila, your families will stop dieing out and you'll have enough characters later in the game. I have tons of options for governors, generals and anything else 200 years into my game.

Its how I'm keeping an exponentially growing Roman Empire fully staffed. Honestly. By 591, conquered everything west of Asia Minor and Egypt, Iberia and Gaul almost fully colonized, Illyria almost fully colonized, and Germany about half colonized. Without that trick, I'd be suffering from severe staffing problems a long time ago.

Can you expound on this? Maybe post an example, I am going to try to inject so more girls into my game. Hopefully the vestalV. won't be too rough on the population,...

Yes, but I'm playing a rapidly expanding Rome in my current game right now too and run out of characters all the time. I'm telling you, if you run the clock forward 2-3 months it will generate more characters for you automatically, without any need to reload.

This is brilliant, wish I knew how to do it! This is now my official number one request for patch 1.3, I'm sick of all my patrician families dying off and foreigners moving into their roman digs. I don't see why paradox can't program things so your characters start off married and perhaps even already with children at the start of the game, it would really help the character system out.

I too request paradox to change the setup in an official patch so that it is nearly impossible to run out of characters. Then there is still the challenge to choose the best.
This random generation of new characters destroys much of the authenticity of the character system.

Maybe, but I really don't care about my governors outside of Italy, Greece, and Tunisia. If I have a bunch of vacant governorships, this method is quite convenient. As it stands, I really couldn't care less about the characters. People die left and right, but there's always another goon to take his place. Maybe if I switched to a dynastic system like dictatorship, I'd at least care about my ruler and his family. As it stands, consuls are rather generic and I don't really have control over who gets elected. Perhaps I need to find a nice character with high charisma and martial skills and send him on a grand campaign against Egypt. Maybe he'll become popular enough to get elected consul and then declare himself dictator. Then again, maybe he'll just start a civil war.

Dearmad said:
The game's character generation and managing leaves something to be desired. Tricks like this are cheesy and the game ought to manage it better.

No argument here. Needs more women and CK style control over marriages and such. Would give the game more depth.

And maybe control of the bloodline of the current ruler of the state (marriages, fancy wo/men and … whatever).
:rofl: maybe a little family-sim inside the game :rofl: *neet* xD

I've never had any problems with lack of characters and I've had 4 global world conquering campaigns with all with minors either 1 or 2 province.

Is this lack of character problem only with the Roman nation? I have yet to try a game as them.

I think they want to staff a 120+ province empire with nothing but supermen. Isn't going to happen. Just use mediocre guys to govern the sticks.

No, characters literally run out. Sometimes I don't have anyone to conduct diplomatic missions for months because no one is available. There should be few high quality people and an endless supply of mediocre ones but that is not the case.

If you want a diplomat you must fire one of your generals or governors. Then the diplomat slot becomes automatically filled by him. However this is annoying because then no other character to fill the now empty office becomes generated.

Ok...I devised the workaround I used basically because the julii family kept dieing out fast because it only starts with one character, as most families do, and only one female would generate for the first 60 years or so. Here's what you do:

In your main directory for Rome, find the folder labeled History...then find the folder labeled chracters, you should see a ton of files with a character name and corresponding number. These are the auto generated characters that generate at certain point in the game. What I did was add more to generate at the beginning of the game.

So anyway, just open one of the files, and copy this into the main document:

name = "Licinia Drusa"
female = yes
military = 1
charisma = 4
finesse = 2
birth_province = 93
add_trait = lustful
wealth_change = 500
loyalty_change = 60
popularity_change = 60
religion = roman_pantheon
culture = roman
employer_country = ROM
family_name = "Livii"

455.1.1 = { birth = 455.1.1 }
530.1.1 = { death = 530.1.1 }

Simply change the character name, family name to whatever you want. Also change the Religion,culture and birth province if your playing someone other than rome. You can find what these values should be by looking thru the other character files and finding one with the country of your choice.

The final step is to simply "Save As"...change the number of the file to the next number available...so if the last character in the list is labeled 580021 - xxxname...you need to save your new character as 580022 - xxname2.

Thats it!

Note if your using a different start time than 474, you'll need to change the birth and death date's so your females are approx 17 when your game would start. If any questions feel free to send me a PM.

All my games have gone great since this change!

Nope, I'm running on a computer thats about 4 years old too, so it's not a power machine by any means. You'll get alot more birth popups, but thats not a big deal for me, as my families arent dieing out left and right.
