Playing as England for the first time and I’m wondering how best to conquer Ireland and Scotland. Should I try to diplo-annex them or just fabricate claims?

You'll need to lose your mainland holdings for that mission to appear. That's the most comfortable way, but it's also really easy to just take everything by warring, you're way stronger than the other nations in Britain. Also, get Orkney and the Shetlands from Norway once you have annexed Scotland.

that. Although do keep an eye out for AE, since that can cause some nasty backlash. You don't want Castille or France doing a massive invasion...

Playing as England for the first time and I’m wondering how best to conquer Ireland and Scotland. Should I try to diplo-annex them or just fabricate claims?

Ireland - ally, marry, improve relations and vassalize munster. Fabricate claims on the rest and sell them one by one to munster, being irish and catholic they will accept them for 0 ductas.

Scotland - there is a vassalize scotland mission. However, if it never comes along, take ayreshire. Once you have ayreshire you should be able to vassalize scotland in one go without a casus belli.

Why the Shetlands? Orkney you have the perpetual claim so I get that one, but Shetlands, can you even fabricate a claim on it?

Exploration ideas. Take the first 3 ideas in the group, then tech to 7, saving as much as possible before taking each diplo tech to get neighbor bonus, except tech 7 which you take as soon as available.

Try not to spend them on anything else. Tech 7 will allow you to reach Greenland from Connaught with the 50% idea. Barely.

Why the Shetlands? Orkney you have the perpetual claim so I get that one, but Shetlands, can you even fabricate a claim on it?
You can easily take it when you war for Orkney, also that 3rd island to the North as well. You'll have to occupy the mainland if you want Iceland, however. What I did was take all 3 of those islands, cored them (since they cost like 20 amp each) and sold them to vassal Scotland early on. You may say "blasphemy, you already cored them". Yes, but Scotland culture converts them + dealing with pesky island revolts is a bitch when trying to fight the mainland powers. Once you form GB Scottish is accepted, not Norwegian.

First idea is usually diplo since diplo tech doesn't net you much. If you plan for the colonization game then take exploration and fill out the first 3. If you end up with a military leader after Henry 0-0-0, you can take a military idea first, same with admin. It's very flexible.

The reason is that England cannot colonize with just exploration ideas. You only take the first 3 ideas then go tech because you only need colonial range idea, which is third, everything else can be filled out later[/b]. You also will need a combination of either tech 7 + 20% colonial range advisor to reach America, or you can wait until tech 9. Either or is fine because the other powers don't start colonizing until around the 4th idea set (Norway gets enough colonial range, Netherlands forms, and France and Brittany get Exploration).

Tech 7 will allow you to reach Greenland from Connaught with the 50% idea. Barely.
This is true but Greenland is yucky. :D
EDIT: Is it really barely? I've never checked but you're only off like 30 range from Newfoundland.

EDIT: Is it really barely? I've never checked but you're only off like 30 range from Newfoundland.

Greenland isn't the best land in the world, but by colonizing it, you can reach much more.

and yes, it's barely. The closest province in Newfoundland is 415 range and you have 412. Greenland's provinces are 407 and 409 from Connaught IIRC...definitely over 400.

If you have a colonial range advisor, it is possible to skip Greenland, though not advisable as you want to block Norway.

If you have a colonial range advisor, it is possible to skip Greenland, though not advisable as you want to block Norway.
I've never seen Norway colonize Greenland. In fact nobody colonizes Greenland, everyone waits until either Idea 4 to take Exploration or waits for the later diplo techs that give you enough range to colonize the Chesapeake.
