It is quite normal for russian tanks like the T-64, T-72, T-80 and T-90 to lose the top when hit, due to their ammo carousel, for the auto-loader, in the bottom of the turret. Unlike most modern western tanks where the ammo is stowaged in the back of the turret, with blowout panels, to protect the crew...

The reason Im presuming that is because the vehicles seems to have been abandoned and then picked off by the M1s. Unless they have invented some new super-crappy tactic they call "fight in a column" or something...
